Joe Kennedy asked that members consider identifying individuals who would be eligible for the Service Above Self award. The award is given to a member of the community who is not a Rotarian but has performed an act that meets the “service above self” definition. If you have a name please submit it to Joe. Diane provided an update to the club on the Christmas program. Here’s the details and dates to remember.
Xenia Rotary's Christmas Program
We will again provide Christmas gifts to children. We gathered names and completed wish lists from
the elementary schools in Xenia, Cedarville and Yellow Springs. We distribute these wish lists to
members along with money to shop for the children. You shop, wrap and return the gifts to club to be
delivered to the schools for distribution. To pay for this wonderful program, we have a club Christmas
Auction. Our goal this year is $15,000. Last year we raised $11,000 in 45 minutes. Each club member
brings at least one wrapped gift valued at $25.00+. Our auctioneers auction off the gifts to club
members and guests they invite. This year we hope to have some larger ticket items we can auction
unwrapped. To add a little fun, you are encouraged to sport your ugly Christmas sweater at the auction
this year. Secret judges will be watching!

Jesse Lear Jesse Lear spoke of his work as an entrepreneur after graduating from Cedarville University in 2009. Jesse found himself selling cable tv service door to door after bouncing a check to one of his college
Orders and Fines for the Day Sarge Ron started with Happy Bucks. He closed with a Hilary Clinton fabrication of the truth. She claims to be named after Sir Edmund Hillary but she was born only 7 years prior to him climbing Mt Everest.
Happy Bucks Bob Geyer is happy that Purdue finally fired their head football coach. Joe Kennedy had a happy buck for Apple Country Farm Market as it is a great place to visit with your family. Tom Zajbel’s happy buck was for the birth of his third great grandson. Randy’s oldest grandson made him happy with an appearance at the state cross country tournament. Jim Kennedy had a happy buck for his 50th high school reunion. He noted that he and Bob Geyer had the most hair compared to the other attendees. Diane had a happy buck to report that Joe Mullins raised the most money as Sarge with John LaRock coming in second. John LeBlanc gave a happy buck for time spent celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary at Anna Marie Island with his entire family paid for the vacation. Denny had a buck for School Bus Safety Day. The district has “0” preventable injuries. Ed Mignery had a buck in honor of Xenia High’s second football victory this season.

friends. Eventually, the two partnered to create a business of providing door to dumpster garbage pickup service at a number of apartment complexes in Columbus Ohio. Their first customer was an individual who gave them a chance to service 250 apartment units. VIP Waste has grown to a million dollar business over 30,000 apartments serviced. Jesse identified three keys to his success. First, relationships are everything. Second, there are different types of success. You need to know what you as an individual want in the way of success. Lastly, entrepreneurship is a life changing experience. Jesse is looking to creat new businesses in the future as an entrepreneur. Jesse then introduced his partner at Nellie’s Ice Pops.
Katie Wormald
Katie has been the managing partner of Nellie’s since her graduation from Cedarville University in 2016. She mentioned that John LeBlanc was her faculty advisor. She worked as an intern for Jesse at Nellies while she was in school. She spoke of her experiences in running a new company and in particular the challenges she faces in dealing with other business people who may be 40 years her senior. Nellies has 13 trucks, with 35 employees distributing the gourment ice pops to restaraunts and select stores in the Columbus area. She provided some reasons why supporting young entrepreneurs is important to a community. They included creating new leaders and jobs. Katie is looking to take Nellies into a more wholesale distribution network and minimize the direct sales at festivals. While they have averaged $536 in sales at these events she believes the company can be more successful by selling their product to stores and restaraunts. Katie mentioned they provide Nellie’s Ice Pops on a monthly basis to nursing homes. She said it is very satisfying to see how the residents enjoy the product and the visits from the Nellie’s staff. The product was named after Jesse’s grandmother. For Jesse, Grandma Nellie was an important person in his life and he felt this was a way to remember her.
