Shopping in Xela

Welcome to Xela! We hope that you enjoy your stay here. Quetzaltenango boasts many things to do, both in and around the city, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding fun activities.

Xela's center has a great small-city feel, as those of us who live here can attest. There are many nice restaurants and happening bars -- the prices are pretty good, too. We recommend each of our advertisers, but we're also sure that you'll be able to find something good on your own if you try.

The hilly terrain and volcanic activity around Quetzaltenango mean that the surrounding area provides many options for outdoor activity. From breathtaking views (and hikes) to plenty of volcanically-fueled hot places to relax, the city has a lot to offer. We’ve listed a few great excursions in the Interesting Sites section. If you’re looking for something more adventurous, we have explanations and directions for many excursions on our website (http://www.xelamaponline.com). For other ideas talk to one of the tour companies located around the center.

While Xela is our favorite place, we also really like Lago Atitlán so we decided to start making a map of there, too. It’s called LAGOMAP, original, we know. If you’re up there, be sure to grab one. (http://www.lagomap.com)

We hope you find this map and guide interesting and useful. If you have any questions or suggestions, please shoot an email over to [email protected]. Most of all, though, enjoy your visit!

Groceries: All the markets have fresh fruit and vegetables. Generally speaking, prices go up as you get closer to the center. So the Terminal Minerva market is the cheapest, followed by La Democracia, Las Flores, and the Centro Comercial by the park. You can get most everything else you need at these markets as well (particularly in La Democracia and at Minerva) but if you feel the need for a true supermarket experience there is always Despensa Familiar or Paiz. Other interesting natural foods (granola, etc.) are available at Al Natur (#10).

Used Clothing: The Minerva market has a big section full of used clothes from the USA. You can find amazing deals here. Bargain away, but look particularly for the 3Q piles. Also check out the many clothing stores scattered around the city. New Clothing: La Democracia market has lots of nice clothing -- Guatemalan-made in the street stalls and more expensive imported stuff in the shops.

Electronics: There are many electronics shops along 12th Avenida ("La Doce"), but you can also find decent deals in the shop right on Parque Central. If you're looking for something for an apartment check out La Pulguita along the side of the cemetery near Parque El Calvario.

Alcohol: El Rosario on 8th Calle (D12-21) near Mercado Las Flores has good prices, but if you can’t make it there you’ll be okay in any tienda.

Souvenirs: Parque Central on the first Sunday of each month is best, but also look in the Centro Comercial next to the park or inside of the central market in La Democracia.

Gear: La Aventura in Mont Blanc (”paiz” in the microbuses).

Cooperative Products: A wide variety of fair-trade and organic products can be found at Café Red. Your purchases here support local cooperatives.

Mercado La DemocraciaThe best prices are in the terminal, but the Democracia Market is close to the center and still has very good prices for meat, fruits and vegetables, electronics, clothes, shoes, hardware, handicrafts and many other things. Here we’ve created a handy map of the stores and shops in the market and the surrounding areas.

Travel Times From Xela

Un cubano regresó de Nueva York. Se encuentra a un amigo que le pregunta:

"Oye chico, ¿y que e' lo que ma' te gutó a ti de Niu Yolk?"

"Oye, chico, pue' Madona"

"Ya lo creo chico, ¡Madona! ¡Qué tetas! ¡Qué culo! ¡La madre que la parió a esa Madona!"

"No, chico, a mí lo que me guta de Madona son lo Big Mac, la papitas fritas, la soda y lo juguetito".

If you're a visitor trying to get in shape on the go, you might have noticed that on it's face Xela doesn't seem like an ideal place to run. First, there's all the diesel exhaust. Then all the hills. Finally, the fact that between the people, dogs, cars, motos, bicycles and more people it can be dicult to navigate the streets even if you know exactly where you're going. Despite how it seems, there ARE a few pretty good options. If you're into trail running you could always hit one of the hikes around town, but venturing alone o into the wilderness isn't exactly something we'd recommend. If you want to stay in or near the city there are a few better options.

1) There are a few routes heading out towards Volcán Santa María -- a particu-larly good 10km (~6 mile) jaunt visits the small village of Tierra Colorada Baja. The small plateau below the Volcano, between Llanos del Pinal and Tierra Colorada Baja is your best bet for nding any sort of long at area.

2) Probably the most popular place to go run amongst locals is El Baúl. It's almost terrifyingly steep at the bottom, but most of the access road isn't very steep and you can always take the shortcut trail back down if you're feeling tired.

3) There's also the sports complex, another popular spot. There's a half mile loop around the baseball eld that you can use for free, or you can use the very nice track for 5Q.

Where To Run

Do you love ultimate frisbee? Do you just want to run around and meet new people? Either way, Xela has a weekly pickup ultimate frisbee game that's perfect for you. You don't need to know how to play, everyone is welcome. The game is on a lighted eld (marked on the map, in Zona 4) so it usually works out to Q15 per person. For more information, visit the Xela Ultimate facebook group or write to [email protected].

Cuban Jokes in Guatemala

Jokes making fun of people from other countries are popular in Guatemala, but I don't think that's why this one is funny. This is playing more on the fact that people who speak other dialects of Spanish simply "talk funny". Caribbean Spanish, Cuban in particular, is known for dropping the sounds at the ends of words which can sometimes lead to confusion. I'm not going to translate this because the humor's only there in the Spanish. See if you can figure it out, or ask your Spanish teacher to explain it to you!

ToyotalandiaWe recently took a trip to the saunas up at Las Cumbres. As we passed through Almolonga, one friend said "You know this place is known as Toyotalandia?" And then we started looking around. First we noticed one Toyota pickup, then another, and another. Before long we were all laughing as we pointed out the rainbow of Toyotas that was all around us.

If you pay a visit to Almolonga or are passing through on the way to Zunil or somewhere else, denitely make sure to notice the Toyotas in Toyota Land. The residents could take one photo of each vehicle and make a remarkable gallery. Good idea for an art project, right?

If you're lucky you'll get to visit Toyotalandia!
