Share markets are sometimes about gambling. Short selling or Shorting is one way in which traders gamble on thvaluations of shares. Shorting is nothing but borrowing shares to sell them with the intention of re-purchasing them atfuture date. This is normally done when it is believed that the share in question is grossly overvalued and is likely tcrash. The gamble is in assuming that it will crash. So if in fact the shares do crash, and they are repurchased pocrash, you pocket a neat profit which is the difference at which they were sold and the price at which they were boughShorting normally requires opening a margin account and collateral must be submitted to cover potential losses. Shorselling can potentially lead to unlimited losses as share prices can rise indefinitely. It is an activity that is normapracticed institutionally or by seasoned traders and should be avoided by new investors.

For all those thinking the UPA 2 government has gone in deep slumber, the news is that they are awake and workineven on a Sunday. UPA 2s belated push for coming back on the governance track was evident last week in the form a reshuffle in the Union Council of Ministers headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Dr. Singh said this wahopefully the last Cabinet reshuffle before the next general elections in 2014 and described the new council of ministeas a combination of youth, experience and relevance. As was widely believed, several new faces were brought in wi17 of the total 22 names being first timers. The appointment of several young ministers highlighted Rahul Gandhinfluence on the entire process, although he himself chose to stay out of the government to focus on the party. As is ttradition in the Congress, loyalty was rewarded and proximity to the Gandhi clan paid off handsomely for many of th

    chosen ones.

The New Look CabinetFormer Law Minister Salman Khurshid was handed the Foreign Ministry, in spite ofcorruption allegations against him, in what many viewed as a message from theCongress to activist turned politician Arvind Kejriwal. M Veerappa Moily has beenmade the new Petroleum Minister with Jaipal Reddy being shifted to the Scienceand Technology Ministry. Veteran Congress leader K Rahman Khan has beenbrought in for the Ministry of Minority Affairs and has been given a cabinet rank. While MM Pallam Raju has been promoted from MoS Defence to the HRD Ministrywith a cabinet rank, former Minister Shashi Tharoor has made a comeback withMoS for HRD portfolio. The crucial Railway Ministry has been allotted to formerParliamentary Affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal. Telugu actor turned politicianChiranjeevi has been given independent charge of Tourism Ministry. Congress

spokesman Manish Tiwary has been given a new role, making him Minister of Statewith Independent Charge for Information and Broadcasting.

The MessageWith this last major change in portfolio allocation to ministers, the Congrehas made its intention loud and clear. The Congress has elevated SalmaKhurshid to a crucial ministry in spite of a relentless campaign waged againhim by Kejriwal, firmly indicating that it will not allow its course to be dictataccording to his demands. The Congress has also rubbed salt into MamaBanerjees wounds by inducting her known detractors in Bengal, DeeDasmunshi and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury into the cabinet. Rahul Gandhchoices have been given ample space in the restructuring with young guJyotiraditya Scindia being given independent charge of Power and Sachin Pilof Corporate Affairs.

MoS Rural Development Agatha Sharma was punished by the NCP for backing her father P.A.Sangma in the race for thPresidents post against Pranab Mukherjee, replacing her with Tariq Anwar, who has been made MoS Agriculture. Tgovernment has sought to overhaul its image with a team that will perform the seemingly impossible task of turning tpopular tide in its favour with efficient and transparent decision making. Echoing this sentiment, PM Singh said Troad ahead is full of challenges. But this is a team, which I hope will be able to meet those challenges."

The ReactionsThe exercise was met with mixed reactions from different sections of commentators. Anti corruption activists criticizethe government for rewarding Salman Khurshid even as grave allegations of corruption have been made against himThe biggest amount of criticism came on the decision to shift out Jaipal Reddy from the Petroleum Ministry, wiactivists as well as the opposition parties asking the government to explain the move. They accused the government bowing to pressure from corporate lobbies, in particularly from Reliance Industries Limited to drive out Mr. Reddy duto his uncompromising stand on the KG D6 gas basin dispute. The absence of even a single face from the eastern stat

apart from Bengal in the cabinet also invited allegations of regional partisanship and neglect against the governmenThe appointment of young ministers to crucial industries was hailed by the media even though it was pointed out ththe average age of ministers in the cabinet was still more than 60 years. The effort to boost decision making througthe appointments was well received by the business community.

What remains to be seen? The present reshuffle is the last major overhaul of the Manmohan Singh cabinet before 2014. This isthe team that must deliver, if the Congress even dreams of making a fight out of the next elections. The economy has to be fixed, governance to be improved and the state of paralysis needs to bebrought to an end. What remains to be seen is whether the government can actually pull it off or willIndia remain in a state of animated suspension until 2014.

A former First Lady, Fernndez has been in the news for her outspoken promotion Argentinas claim on the Falkland Islands, her covert clampdown of Argentinas independemedia and more recently, for her move to reduce Argentinas voting age from 18 to 16 yearsmove which critics say is aimed at wooing young voters who support her policies-ahead of th2013 elections. Often compared to Bill and Hillary Clinton, the powcouple had massive support from the Argentinean masses and it was on this support thFernndez rode the victory wave in the 2007-Presidential elections.

In recent years, Fernndezs popularity has waned. Skirmishes with the nations powerfagricultural sector and her implementation of unpopular policies like curbs on imports an

Trecover from the economic crisis of 2001, the harsh steps Fernndez implemented led persistent and under-reported inflation which is not in tune with her Peronist ideologies. staunch supporter of human rights, her presidency saw Argentina become the first LatAmerican country to legalize same-sex marriages. 1) Ripped apart by financial crisis, Greek society in free-fall Washington Post/ ETIMPACT: Four years of economic recession has ruined the social fabric of the Greek society and has changed the waof life as Greeks know it. Inspite of receiving a bailout package of 240 billion ($313 billion) the situation has hardimproved and the Greek economy is predicted to shrink by 4.7%. With unemployment close to 25%, Greek youth haan uncertain future looming ahead of them. Corrupt politicians, tax evasion bythe countrys elite and rising popularity and acceptance of an extreme right -wing fringe group-Golden Dawn-which has been involved in violence againstimmigrants, has made the society unsafe. The countrys suicide rate, whichused to be the lowest in Europe, has increased by 40% as more people are

ending their lives citing their inability to support their families. The number ofGreek citizens turning to NGOs for healthcare treatment and giving up theirchildren for adoption has also increased.

KEY PLAYERS: Greek Government, Greek society

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?Without economic growth, Greece cannot boost itsincome, pay off its debts nor make lives better for its citizens. Without furtherhelp from the rest of Europe, Greece will be forced to exit the Euro. Fed upwith rising unemployment and falling living standards, a large percentage of Greeks have also been clamouring forEuro-zone exit which makes implementation of further austerity measures almost impossible. If it does exit the Eurreintroduction of the Greek Drachma in the country is almost certain inspite of facing the risk of the currency beidevalued quickly and radically-making it even harder for Greece to repay its debts.

    2) Tata Sky plans to raise Rs 2000 crore via IPO ETIMPACT:The Indian Governments move to digitize the cable network in gradual phases will greatly boost the revenuof Tata Sky and its competitors. With Dish TV already listed and Videocon D2H also planning to raise money through aIPO, things are beginning to look up for this industry. According to a Frost & Sullivan report, India is the 3rd largemarket for cable TV penetration in the world and the recent changes in Government rules along with possible increa

in FDI inflows and consolidation will drive 30% growth for digital cable 2015. Tata Sky has 13 million subscribers and this will help in getting tcompany a decent valuation.

KEY PLAYERS:Tata Sky, digital cable industry

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Government mandated digitization proposed to be a win-win situation for all stakeholders in the televisiobusiness as consumers will be able to view better quality channels a

digital cable companies will see a multi-fold spike in opportunities. PhaII of cable digitization is targeting 38 cities in 15 states by 31st mar2013. Banks such as SBI are positive on and are backing players such

Hathway and Dan Network. With the market giving such positive vibes and conditions from all over the countbecoming increasingly conducive, Tata Skys IPO is on its way to becoming a success and the company can finally hoto make sizable profits.

    3) Indian labour laws hit growth: Kaushik Basu (World Bank Chief Economist) The Indian ExpressIMPACT:Indian labour laws do not hold a favourable position in the eyes of many reputed bodies. Since 2008, WorBank has criticized the complexity, lack of modernization and flexibility in Indian regulations. A 2007 article in ThEconomist finds India to have the most restrictive labour laws in any major economy of the world. Studies have fouthat rigid labour laws in India have partly been the cause of lowemployment growth, the large unorganized sector, an extensiveunderground economy, the use of casual and child labour and low per capita

income. Scholars argue that the countrys inflexible labour lawsdisincentivize new entrepreneurs to start their own companies anddiscourage existing entrepreneurs to hire additional workers. The laws arealso found to cripple Indian firms ability to expand or adjust with changes inthe global economy.

KEY PLAYERS:GoI, Indian labour market, Indian companies

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?The World Development Report of the World Bank has said that small Indian towns have tpotential to become employment generating centres if Indian labour laws are made flexible. Tier-II and Tier-III citiare attracting the attention of many companies and according to a study by ASSOCHAM, 60% of the jobs created in tcountry in 2011 were in small and medium cities. IT companies are also interested in locating some of their businessin the hinterland as the real estate and work force is cheaper there than in the cities. Thus, there is a need for thgovernment to get actively involved and bring about much-need reforms in Indian labour laws.

1:1.65 equity shares (Wipro Ltd: Wipro Enterprises)

    KEY PLAYERS:Wipro, SEBI

    5) Volkswagen Group to re-position Skoda below Volkswagen IE/Moneycontrol.comIMPACT: German automobile manufacturer, Volkswagen AG will reposition the Skoda brand in India below Volkswag which will be in line with the companys global business strategy. Internationally, Skoda is placed below tVolkswagen brand of premium cars; however, in India the Czech Republic based Skoda is positioned above the Germacars. Volkswagen owned Audi is in luxury segment and Skoda & Volkswagen both are premium segment carVolkswagen offers seven models in India Polo, Vento, Jetta, Passat, Phaeton, Touareg and Beetle. While Skoda hfive models in the country - Fabia, Rapid, Laura, Superb and Yeti. With this decision, the company may have mapped India specific and global strategies, however, consumers are not so excited with the latest developments. Skoda, whiis placed at the higher side of the premium segment, is likely to see a fall in its sales and the current owners of Skodmodels might also turn up selling the cars. Besides future consumers are of the opinion that, repositioning the brandsynonymous to decreasing its price at the cost of the cars features and quality.

    KEY PLAYERS:Volkswagen, Skoda

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? Volkswagen is trying toexpand its presence in the highly competitive autoindustry in India. With the launch of entry level sedansthat are positioned and priced near premium segmenthatchbacks, Volkswagen has seen a fall in sales. Thecompany is also not planning to introduce its new smallcar model Up! In India before 2015 since the businesscase for the country is not positive.

    7) BBC Entertainments pull-out exposes hidden mysteries in the Indian TV & News channel market Moneylife/LivemintIMPACT: The general entertainment channel of the UK based BBC; BBC Entertainment will shut its operations in Indby November this year along with its CBeebies brand a kids entertainment channel. The reason - the Indian televisiobroadcasting industry is highly fragmented and is occupied by a huge number of free channels that has financibacking from politicians and businessmen. This makes it difficult for the paid TV channels to earn revenues as thoperating cost is high and gains from advertising are not up to the mark. After months of operations in India, senimanagement of BBC took the harsh decision as it was increasingly becoming in-feasible to sustain a pay TV channel inmarket which is dominated largely by free TV channels. A report compiled by Moneylife shows the state-wise presenof politicians in the TV broadcasting business:

    1. Kerala: CPI-M owns Kairali TV and People TV. KPCC, along with four businessmen own a combined stake of 26in Jai Hind TV2. Tamil Nadu: Grand nephews of Karunanidhi, Marans, control Sun TV, Sun News, KTV, Sun Music, Gemini T

amongst other channels. Jayalalitha owns Jaya TV and Karunanidhi controls Kalaignar TV3. Karnataka: Rajeev Chandrasekhar, an independent MP, controls Asianet and Asianet Plus (Malayalam), Suvar

(Kannada), Vijay (Tamil) and Sitara(Telugu). The Reddy brothers from Bellary own Janashri and Kannada daily ENamma Kannada Nadu

    4. Maharashtra: The Darda family controls IBN-Lokmat and Lokmatnewspaper. Shiv Sena Chief Balasaheb Thackeray is the editor of partymouthpiece Saamna. Sharad Pawar family controls Marathi daily Sakaal andalso owns Sam TV

    KEY PLAYERS:BBC Network, BBC Entertainment

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? The Indian TV broadcasting market is filled with poorquality channels getting funding from dubious sources. Thus, better qualitychannels have to resort to paid programs which increase their costs substantially. Also, politicians manipulate news their favor and use the news channel as a tool against opposition parties.

    8) Banks scramble to cash in on festive season, while house prices continue to soar - ET/Hindu Business LineIMPACT: All major banks in India are preparing to attract customers this festive season. Central Bank of India hareduced processing fee on home and auto loans to zero and will organise realty exhibitions in 100 cities in cominmonths. ICICI Bank has gone one step further announcing cash back of one per cent of the monthly instalments ohome loans at regular intervals. Corporation Bank is also holding property expos and has launched a combo offer whiallows customers to get an additional 0.25 per cent reduction on auto loan, if they also take the home loan. Howevehome prices have gone up by 24.1 per cent y-o-y in the September quarter. In metros, this rise is steeper. More th80,000 flats still remain unsold in Mumbai and the NCR region is no more recognized as the fastest-growing marke

According to analysts people cannot be lured to invest in property at such price leve

just by lowering the interest rates on loans.

    KEY PLAYERS: Banking industry

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? Banks are forced to concentrate on smaller retail loans their rising non-performing assets (NPAs) have made them risk-averse. It is safer provide smaller loans than a huge loan to a single corporate account. That is whome loans account for nearly half of the total retail banking industry.

    9) Another major patent setback raises worries for foreign pharma companies in India ReutersIMPACT: International pharmaceutical industry has received yet another blow from the Intellectual Property AppellaBoard (IPAB) of India. The board has revoked a patent granted six years ago on Roche's hepatitis C drug Pegasys. felt that neither the drug was any better than existing treatments nor was its pricing just. Roche now has an option appeal against the decision in Supreme Court. It may be recalled that, just a few months ago, India had grante

compulsory licence to domestic drugmaker Natco for selling cheaper versions of Bayer's cancer drug Nexavar. Sudecisions have heightened the tensions between New Delhi and global pharma-majors. Multinational drug processorealize that India's $12 billion drug market cannot be ignored. However, these companies are wary of the laintellectual property laws in India. Generic medicines account for more than 90 percent of sales of medicines in India.

    KEY PLAYERS: IPAB, Roche

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? Pegasys was the first medicine to win patent for apharmaceutical product in 2006 under India's new patent regime. The market price ofPegasys is 436,000 rupees for a four year treatment. Hence, some people in the industrybelieve that the decision should be welcomed as a disease like hepatitis C generally hits themost vulnerable in society. However, it remains to be seen if such decisions would impactthe research and thus investment by foreign pharma companies in India.

    10) Heavy incentives fail to boost truck sales- DNA/ETIMPACT: Sales of heavy commercial vehicles like Buses and Trucks have dropped 24 per cent in October. Heavdiscounts offered in the festive season and new launches by Tata & Bharat Benz have failed to revive the segmenAshok Leyland has increased discounts on its trucks to 60,000. Tata Motor & Eicher, which also operate in tintermediate commercial vehicle (ICV) category (Trucks with 8-14 tonne capacity) are offering discounts up to 1

lakh. Still the sales have not been satisfactory. The sharpest fall was witnessin the multi-axle trailer category, which dropped almost 40% year on yeaAnalysts and manufacturers believed that the slowdown in commercial vehicsales was cyclical as usual and that it will revive in the month of OctobeHowever, that did not happen. While diesel prices have gone up impacting t

sales in LCV category, the slowdown in M&HCV (medium and heavy commercvehicle) segment is largely due to economic environment in the country.

    KEY PLAYERS: HCV manufacturers

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? Despite slump in sales back home, Tata Motobecause of its diversified portfolio has been able to perform well in overseas market. Morgan Stanley has upgraded TaMotors to 'overweight' from 'equalweight'. The rating agency believes that M&HCV will hit trough in the next six monthMorgan Stanley has also predicted cyclical recovery for underweight Ashok Leyland which has been now upgraded 'overweight' status.

    11) Suzuki files for bankruptcy in US, will now focus on emerging markets- BS/ETIMPACT: Suzuki is planning to focus more on its business in emerging economies like India & South Asia as its U

based unit is filing for bankruptcy. The automaker has been importing cars from Japan to the US, but as Japanescurrency inflated against the dollar, demand for Suzukis cars (which have the lowest share in US market) reducefurther. However, the company will continue to sell its motorcycles, ATVs (all terrain vehicles) and motor boats in UOn the other hand, in India, the company is in driving position. Maruti Suzuki controls 42 percent of the IndiaPassenger Vehicle market. In terms of unit sales, its India business alonecontributes to 40 per cent of global sales. However, the pressure hasincreased in recent times due to success of new players in the market. Thecompany will raise annual capital expenditure to about 200 billion yen($2.5 billion) over the next five years from about 120 billion yen in the pastfive-year period. These investments will help it expand manufacturing inIndia, Hungary and Thailand.

    KEY PLAYERS: Suzuki Motors

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? Barring Honda and Toyota, Asian carmakershave achieved very limited success in US. Suzukis exit has come afterSaab Automobile and Isuzu Motors, who also failed to impress the Americans. Suzukis departure will leave MitsubisMotors as the smallest Japanese automaker selling vehicles in the US. Mitsubishis sales this year have fallen 29 pcent to 50,103, reducing its market share to 0.4 per cent from 0.7 per cent.

    12) Mahindra Holidays acquires 49% stake in IHGCL, adds resort - BS/ETIMPACT: Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd (MHRIL) has announced to acquire 49 per cent stake in InfiniHospitalities Group Company for an undisclosed sum. This has provided MHRIL an opportunity to enter Bangkok wheit will now jointly own the new resort. Centrally located in the Bangkok business district, the new property called 'M

Boutique Suites' is a 77-room full service resort. The resort provideasy access to a wide array of shopping, entertainment, museums ainternational cuisines.

The bookings are available to members of Club Mahindra at a nominaccess fee under a special arrangement. The resort will also cater outside travellers. Hence, apart froBangkok, MHRIL has been on a lookout for such opportunities locations like Dubai and Sri Lanka. Other international destinatiowhere Mahindra Holidays operates resorts include Thailand, Malaysand Austria.

    KEY PLAYERS: MHRIL

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? MHRIL has added 781 rooms across the resort network in last 10 months. With this additithe resort count at Mahindra Holidays stands at 43. Shares of Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India were trading at Rs 28on the BSE, down 1.58 per cent from its previous close.

    13) Power Unchanged: Barack Obama re-elected as President of the United States TOI/NDTV/IBNIMPACT: Barack Obama, the soft spoken Democrat, has won the Presidential elections for the second time in tUnited States over Mitt Romney the aggressive Republican, in the process creating history as a Democrat holdinPresident Office for two consecutive tenures since World War II. Obama has assured his people that he will work fthe middle class and towards the American dream. There were several factors that worked in favour of USAs firAfrican American president. The credit of his victory also goes to the team who designed his presidential campaigwhich initially defined Romney in negative light and then introduced Obama as the face of the common AmericaMajority of the Americans blame George W. Bush and not Obama for the bad economicconditions. Also other reasons like improving economic and job conditions, Romneys

association with Bain Capital where as a consultant he fired several employees forcost cutting measures and handling the Osama Bin Laden situation effectively helpedObama win elections.

KEY PLAYERS:US President, Barack Obama, Mitt Romney

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? America is the only superpower which is slowly and steadilyemerging from the world economic crisis compared to others that are still struggling tomanage their sky high debt. Obamas election as the president will have a huge impacton the Indian outsourcing industry as he is driving the agenda of cost leverage model which includes forcing companies to increase their US workforce. The cost of US labour is thrice that of an Indian which decreases the promargins of these companies.

    14) Canadian PM Stephen Harper visits India, 14 major deals in the spotlight CBC/Reuters/ The Star

IMPACT: CanadianPrime Minister Stephen Harper's week-long visit ending on Nov 9 has come at a time when tIndian government is entangled in a bitter tax dispute with the British telecom operator Vodafone Group. Harper, befoflying to India, discussed his Agenda with media persons laying special emphasis on bringing Indo-Canadian trade toright balance. Currently, Canada feels that the balance is tilted towards India. The key issues like foreign investmeprotection treaty and Canadian exports of uranium to India are expected to be discussed during the meet. However, tCanadian officials have hinted that a consensus on both or any of these issues is unlikely to be build before 2013. TIndian government has currently paused all its negotiations with other countries on foreign investment protectioagreements after Vodafone threatened the Indian government with arbitration proceedings. However,14 major dea

worth $2.5 billion of investment are still expected to be inked.

    KEY PLAYERS: Stephen Harper

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? Canadas International Trade Minister Ed Fast hstated that investment environment in India is quite opaque and does little

convince business community in Canada to see India as an investmeopportunity. Current bilateral trade between the two countries is about $5billion, but both governments hope to increase that to $15 billion by 2015. On tother hand, the nuclear cooperation agreement with Canada (signed in 2010) stuck on the issue of safeguards. Canada is not convinced with Indias argumethat it answers to IAEA and hence additional tracking of Uranium is not required

    15) Top Brands that became generic: Band-Aid, Vaseline, Xerox, Aspirin, etc - CBS NewsIMPACT:A generic trademark, also known as a genericized trademark or proprietary eponym, is a trademark or branname that has become the generic name for, or synonymous with, a general class of product or service, against thusual intentions of the trademark's holder. Some brands become so popular that they become part of our everydalexicon. By completely dominating markets (either when they were introduced or when they came into the limelight duto changing technology and changing needs) brands such as Band-Aid, Xerox,Google, etc have made the leap from being just a product to being a part of

peoples vocabulary. Some brands have become such common terminology thatthey are even defined in the Oxford Dictionary (E.g.-Hoover, Jell-O, etc)

KEY PLAYERS:Marketing focussed companies, Copyright & Trademark awardingbodies

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?Though generic branding is often viewed as being goodfor the company, this is not always the case. Because once a brand name becomesgeneric, it becomes nearly impossible to control or protect the trademark. And ifcompanies fail to renew their trademarks regularly, they might lose the rights totheir brand name forever. Also, once a word becomes legally available to thepublic, companies find it very hard to get back the legal rights. E.g. - Brands like Yo-Yo and Escalator were onprotected, but now their marks are defunct. However, for brands like Apples iPod, which dominate consumers thoughwhen they make their purchasing decisions, the leap to generic terminology is good as it leads to increased sales.

Windows8 Microsoft Adapts to new realities

    Continued from last week

    UEFI instead of Bios

Windows 8 supports a feature of the UEFI specification known as "Secure boot", which uses a public-key infrastructu

to verify the integrity of the operating system and prevent unauthorized programs such as bootkits from infecting thdevice. Despite the security benefits of the feature, Microsoft faced criticism (particularly from free softwasupporters) for mandating that devices receiving its optional certification for Windows 8 have secure boot enabled bdefault using a key provided by Microsoft. Concerns were raised that secure boot could prevent or hinder thinstallation of alternate operating systems such as Linux, or that future computers could outright restrict the use of aoperating system but Windows using secure boot. In response to the criticism, Microsoft developer Tony Mangefesstated that "At the end of the day, the customer is in control of their PC. Microsofts philosophy is to provide customewith the best experience first, and allow them to make decisions themselves." (Source : Wikipedia)

    Business Implications:

Perhaps the most important implication of Windows 8 is the fact that Windows 8 Pro comes with Office 2013, thmaking it especially useful for enterprise usage. No doubt high flying executives are in love with their ubiquitous iPadhowever the iPad is rather restricted when it comes to enterprise use, mostly for viewing and sending emails or takinnotes. Which is why Windows 8 equipped tablets like the Surface will have a definite edge over Apple. Apple has alwahad problems entering the enterprise market where Microsoft has always been a dominant player. With the focus otouch and thus tablets, Windows 8 could mark an important event in the enterprise computing market. SurfacMicrosofts Tablet comes with a keyboard, keeping in mind that the era of desktops is not quite over.

Consumerization drives most of Apples designs, however, this means that the needs of the modern office are nexactly kept in mind. Microsofts experience in the office technologies market shows in the design of Windows 8 aSurface. RIM could have been a major competitor, but with its recent setbacks and lack of clarity in coming out wisomething new for the enterprise market has meant that very few have any expectations from RIM. Googles Androidstill fragmented and it hasnt really targeted enterprises though it is something that they are working towards. For nothe advent of the Surface and Windows 8 leaves some interesting opportunities for Microsoft to exploit.

    Future Trends

What is clear is that how tech firms view the computing market is now governed to a large extent by the advent omobility technologies. Touch input makes interacting with technology far more intuitive. However, the utility factor is tnow largely limited to general entertainment use. Working on a tablet for long hours is still not a pleasant experienceyour job involves typing a lot. High end applications like CAD/ CAM or Photoshop still require high powered desktopAnswering emails and taking notes is just not enough for workplace requirements.

Surface and Windows 8 are steps in a direction most techcompanies have ignored. The importance on cloud in Windows8 also points to the gradual acceptance of cloud basedapplications as default options. As for gamers, it matters little

as most games require either a console or a computerpowerful enough to control a nuclear reactor. It would beinteresting to note how the developer community and gamersreact to Windows 8, as most gamers need Windows to runtheir PC games.

A world where touch and voice are truly exploited to give aseamless augmented reality experience is still a while away. However, that world is coming nearer with each passing day.Is the technological singularity near? Maybe we are alreadythere!
