There has been discussion of this issue in classrooms and there have been people visiting the College as part of a Living Library to share with the students their experience of coming to Australia as refugees and the difficulties they experienced in settling in our country. We are grateful to Jesuit Social Services for its generosity and assistance with the Living Library. Currently the complex issue of asylum seekers and people smuggling is being discussed around the country, as the main political parties seek to enact or to put forward policies that are harsh and appear to be designed to exempt Australia from the claims made on us by people who seek our protection. Last month the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office called for Australia‘s asylum seeker policies to be inspired by the centrality of human dignity and the obligation to care for our brothers and sisters who, in their desperation, ask for our welcome and assistance. Bishop Hanna commented that the new resettlement arrangements with Papua New Guinea are based on the fundamentally untrue premise that it is wrong for people fleeing from persecution to seek asylum in Australia. He stated that the Catholic Bishops of Australia share the concerns of the Bishops of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands that Australia is asking the people of Papua New Guinea to show a level of generosity far beyond their economic means. The Australian Jesuits are also troubled by the debate on refugees and asylum seekers. Last week Fr Steve Curtin SJ, the Provincial, issued a public statement on the matter. When we reflect on the current debate in Australia, Fr Curtin SJ commented: ―Remembering that over 90 per cent of people who come by boat to seek protection in Australia are found to be refugees who have fled from persecution in their own land, we should imagine why a young man, knowing that his friends have died on a previous boat, would pay a people smuggler to take him to Australia. What would it be like for young people traumatised by what they have seen in their own lands and on the journey, to spend years in detention? What would it be like for families to be dumped on Nauru or Manus Island? What would it be like to live as a foreigner, resourceless and with limited rights in a poor Pacific nation that struggles to care for its own citizens? What matters in our refugee policy is the welfare of real human beings who come to us to seek asylum. We should hear their claims and offer protection to those found to be refugees. That protection involves ensuring that they have food, shelter, security, care for health, access to education, the right to work and to make a life for themselves and to contribute to society free from fear. To ensure and to save human lives and suffering, we shall need to make regional agreements. But their aim should not be to exempt Australia from the claims made on us by people who seek our protection. It is to ensure that they can travel and live with dignity without need for people smugglers.‖ A full copy of Fr Curtin‘s statement can be accessed at www.jesuit.org.au As we conclude Social Justice Week, may our hearts continue to be moved by compassion for our fellow human beings who have been forced to flee from (Continued on page 2)

FROM THE RECTOR

Dear Parents and Guardians Throughout the College this week we have celebrated Social Justice Week with a particular focus on raising awareness of the justice issues associated with refugees. There has been discussion of this issue in classrooms and there have been people visiting the College as part of a Living Library to share with the students their experience of coming to Australia as refugees and the difficulties they experienced in settling in our country. FROM THE RECTOR CONT

Fr Thomas Renshaw SJ Rector [email protected]

Dear Parents and Guardians, During the school day there are often times when parents need to collect their child before the published finishing time for that day. Depending upon the age of the child, parents may request that their child meet them at a location that requires independent travel from the College, or alternatively, parents may come to the College to collect their child. To ensure the safety of our children, may I request that the following procedures be followed should you seek to collect your child before the end of the school day:

Early Years – parents are requested to notify the College (Early Years‘ Reception) that their child will be collected before the end of the school day. This may be by email, phone or note. Parents must collect their child from the Early Years‘ Reception (Gate 1 entry) and sign them out. Middle Years – parents are requested to notify the College (Main Reception) that their child will be collected before the end of the school day. This may be by email ([email protected]), phone or note. If your child is to be collected from school, parents must collect their child from Main Reception (Gate 3 entry) and sign them out. Children will not be permitted to wait at the gate or on the streets surrounding the school. If you require your child to leave the school and travel independently, the College must receive a note, signed by the parent, stating the time you would like your child to leave.

I wish to clarify these procedures, especially for parents with boys in the Middle Years, as there have been occasions, though infrequent, when children have been waiting in the surrounds of the College for a considerable time due to parents being inadvertently delayed. Should you have any concerns with the above arrangements, I would be happy to discuss these with you. May I remind parents that the return date for students attending the Burke Hall Campus in Term 4 is Tuesday 8 October 2013. This differs from students attending the Senior Campus, who will return on Monday 7 October. On Monday 7 October, teachers from the Burke Hall and Kostka Hall campuses will be meeting at Burke Hall to participate in a professional learning day. I look forward to seeing many of you at the 3-Campus Concert to be held on 3 September at Hamer Hall. Our boys and girls have worked so hard in preparation for this evening. I am sure the combined choir will delight. Performing at such a premier venue will certainly create special memories for our children – and for us. Peace and best wishes,

persecution in their homeland asking for our protection and assistance. Let‘s pray too for those people who have died at sea whilst making that journey.

Parent Communication with the College Xavier College continually seeks to improve its communication flow with all members of the College community. To achieve this end we ask all parents and guardians to observe the following protocol: All telephone messages and emails should be addressed to one person only. If parents wish to include other relevant parties in the communication, this should be done under the cc heading. Observance of this list will allow the College to coordinate its response efficiently and effectively and thus contribute to a speedy resolution of any concern. Who is the one person to whom a parent makes contact? Over a pastoral / wellbeing concern, the Homeroom teacher should be the contact. Over a learning progress concern, the Subject teacher should be contacted. If the learning concern occurs in more than one classroom then the Homeroom teacher should be contacted. Only when these contacts fail to meet resolution, or your concern is grave, should Learning Leaders be the contact person. All phone calls to Burke Hall need to come through Reception on: 9855 4100 It is important to note that messages to students, which are not urgent in nature, cannot be guaranteed to be delivered throughout the school day. As students learn in multiple teaching spaces, the Reception staff are not always able to always track down student movement. Messages from parents calling to remind students to attend music lessons etc will not be forwarded on, as an important aspect about student learning is taking responsibility for their actions. This year, as part of their daily routine in Year 5 and 7, students will be accessing emails throughout the school day; parents may prefer to use this method of communication.

Learning Progress Discussions A reminder that Learning Progress Discussions will be held at Burke Hall on Thursday 12 September commencing at 4:00pm and concluding at 8:00pm. These discussions will also be taking place on Tuesday 17 September commencing at 1:00pm and finishing at 8:00pm. Parents will be notified when bookings become available on the school portal.

FROM THE DEAN OF MIDDLE YEARS

In my conversations with many Year 8 boys recently, it was clear that they were interested in life at the Senior Campus. They have been engaged in discussions with teachers and hopefully with you regarding their subject selections for next year. Thank you for assisting them during this important period. Also, the boys are thoroughly looking forward to the next two weeks as they will be undergoing a one-week City Cite experience. This is an excellent opportunity to become an independent learner. We look forward to seeing the boys‘ presentations. We also look forward to Thursday 28 August. This is when the boys in Year 7 will demonstrate their learning in the form of the ‗Night of the Notables‘. The boys selected a high achieving notable whom they believe is gifted and has made, or is making, an important contribution to our society. Through extensive research, the students have become experts on their chosen person. I‘m sure you are looking forward to seeing what activities they have completed and how they will convey the knowledge that they have learned. Year Level Assemblies are an important aspect of life in the Middle Years. While this is an opportunity to bring the Year Level together and build community spirit, it is also an opportunity to celebrate and share students‘ successes as well as disseminate information pertinent to all the boys on the campus. Through these assemblies, it is hoped that the boys understand that the best outcome will be achieved if they respect certain principles. Some of these are listed below: - allow others to learn without distraction - respond courteously and display good manners - respect and listen to the opinions of others - be prepared and on time to class and other school activities - complete your work to the best of your ability - use ICT in accordance with Xavier College Electronic Communication Policy - treat both adults and peers with dignity, courtesy, understanding, trust and compassion - value the talents and individuality of others - keep the College environment clean and tidy - have a clear understanding of and comply with the College rules - uphold the ethos of the Ignatian/Catholic environment. We appreciate our partnership and aim to work together to support the boys in understanding the importance of these principles.

Junior Debating Forum On 6 August, some of our quick thinking and fast talking students boarded a bus headed for Melbourne Grammar School, to take part in the Junior Debating Forum. The topic for debate was ―that the Australian Flag should be re-designed.” The following Year 7 students represented Burke Hall:

The following Year 6 students represented Burke Hall:

A special note of thanks must be mentioned as a number of boys stood in for their peers who were unable to attend due to ill health. We are lucky to have so many generous young people who are happy and willing to make up a team at late notice. Matthew Donoghue and Joseph Hourigan, both from Year 6, travelled with the team as observers, ready to step in if required. We also thank the students who prepared their debates in advance and represented our school so proudly. Thank you Mrs Bernau and Mr Buckler for accompanying the students. The arguments for all negative teams weighed heavily on patriotism and respect for Australia‘s history. By contrast, much of the thinking from the affirmative teams was related to pride in our nation‘s independence, issues of multiculturalism and inclusion and recognition of the indigenous. The meeting was indeed a feast of wit and words. Joseph Hourigan noted that, although it was a formal debate, it was a friendly atmosphere and very enjoyable. He was impressed by all the speakers and admitted he was not sure who was going to win. Matthew reported that he also observed two very effective arguments. According to Matthew, following a long period of adjudication, it appeared the debate could go either way. Grimwade clawed through for a close win in the end.

FROM THE DEAN OF EARLY YEARS

At Xavier College, we recognise that every child develops at a different rate intellectually, physically and emotionally. Each day we strive to meet the challenge of creating a positive foundation for learning by providing a broad-based curriculum that enables each child to explore a wide variety of intellectual, physical, and creative opportunities at his or her own pace.

The last few weeks have been very productive with many wonderful high points. As always, we have extended our learning experiences beyond the classroom, with-in school activities and excursions. Here are some examples: Violin Master Class for Year 3 and 4 students with Mimi Zweig Fire Brigade visit with Year Prep class Prep to Year 2 Incursion ―The Fairy Cookbook‖, a narrative writing workshop Year 11 students visited Early Years to coach Year 3 and Year 4 students in various game skills as part of their VCE Health and Physical Education studies Rehearsal for the Three-Campus Concert Xavier College Snowsports Italian Day Year 4 visit to St Patrick‘s Cathedral and Jewish Museum as a part of their Unit of Inquiry study Year 4 visit to Year 9 class at the Senior Campus as part of Social Justice Week.

Year 3 Outdoor Education Program, Camp Angahook, Airey’s Inlet Last week our Year 3 students joined with Kostka Hall Year 3 students for an overnight stay at Camp Angahook. Students enjoyed their first experience of the Xavier College Outdoor Education program that included a visit to the Split Point Lighthouse, a walk on the beach tracks and challenges and team games at the camp venue. The participation and behaviour of the students was excellent, and all have come back having tried something new and challenging. These trips and events are made possible by the creativity and enthusiasm of staff. My thanks go to them all. I am a firm believer in learning by doing and am convinced that what happens outside the classroom is as crucial in contributing to a rounded education as what happens within it. Children learn so much outside the classroom, ranging from new experiences, co-operating with peers on new challenges, experiencing a different viewpoint and learning outside their comfort zone.

James Avgerinos and Mimi Sweig Year 11 PE class

The debates were tight and hard fought. Unfortunately, we did not secure a victory on the outing but the learning and opportunity to socialise with young people from Genazzano, Sacré Coeur, St Kevin‘s and Melbourne Grammar School, was a rich reward. Everyone especially enjoyed the afternoon refreshments on the Master‘s Lawn. We are grateful to MGS for hosting the event and for extending such warm hospitality. We look forward to attending the next Junior Debating Forum in Term 4 at Genazzano. Jacqueline Crimmins Learning Enhancement Centre

During the last two weeks the Library has been celebrating Book Week across the Years 5 to 8 levels. As part of Book Week celebrations, visiting author Tristan Bancks spoke to Years 6 and 7 students, delighting them with stories from his childhood, many of which have been used in his Book ―My life and other stuff I made up”, which we have enjoyed reading in the Library. Tristan also appeared in the TV series Home and Away for a period of two to three years and his claim to fame is that his great great uncle Jim Bancks was the author of Ginger Meggs comics, which are currently making a comeback in the newspapers. He also shared the process he practises to write his books using the latest technology and encouraged the boys to keep reading lots of books and write as much as they could. Last week each class participated in the infamous annual Library Book Quiz displaying their competitive nature and knowledge about all things literary. The Library staff were impressed with how much information the students had retained and the teamwork used to answer the questions. If you would like to find out the winners of the Children‘s Book Council Awards from the shortlist for 2013 please go to its website: http://cbca.org.au/awards.htm Reflections about Tristan Bancks Wow! Tristan was one of my favourite guest authors; he was very creative and made us laugh! His books are real page turners and they make you want to read more and more…he was amazing. Tristan Bancks has inspired me to read his books…he was very enthusiastic and humorous. Tristan Bancks was a very funny man, he loved using stories that happened in his life and then he would add a twist to the tale. Julie Connelly Coordinator of Library Services Burke Hall Library

FROM THE FAITH AND SERVICE OFFICE

XAVIER SOCIAL JUSTICE NETWORK

Anne Slingo Acting Faith and Service Coordinator [email protected]

Social Justice Week: 26 - 30 August 2013 Social Justice Week is held each year during Term 3. In line with the Ignatian mission of the service of faith and the promotion of justice, Social Justice Week aims to broaden students‘ awareness of issues pertaining to social justice, as well as encourage us all to live simply, so that others may simply live. Accordingly, all students at Xavier College have been asked to give up a luxury for the duration of Social Justice Week. The money they would have spent on this luxury is then pledged to Caritas Australia. This year‘s theme is ―Refugees‖ and consequently students across all Year Levels are exploring this pertinent topic. There is also a number of special activities scheduled for each day, including guest speakers, Bread Roll day and Environment day. You are encouraged to discuss the topic of refugees with your child, and ask them about their pledge and the myriad of ways they can partake in Social Justice Week.

Tom Koller (Year 10) assisting Edward Hicks and Will Keenan (Year 7 Rodriguez) with ‗Games for Change‘, an online refugee game.

DARING TO BE DIFFERENT 2013

The Social Justice Network‘s annual advocacy event is on September 5 and we have three inspirational speakers who will be in conversation with ABC broadcaster Margaret Coffey on the subject of Modelling Leadership as Authentic Service. As we prepare for an election there is a strong sense that we are in desperate need of leaders who operate from values of authenticity and service rather than self-interest, power and control. What sort of leaders are we and what do we look for in those who lead us? Speakers: Charles Mullany, a former Professor of Cardiothoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic, who is now a doctor in a jail in Phoenix, Arizona. Patrick Allen who worked with young offenders for many years at Jesuit Social Services and is now a criminal defence lawyer. Elissa Kennedy who is a Principal for Maternal and Child Health at the Centre for International Health, Burnet Institute, Melbourne. She is a medical doctor with more than seven years‘ experience in international public health, research and policy.

All three speakers are inspirational and passionate and all have dared to be different by showing leadership in their professional and personal lives.

Victorian Interschool Championships The Victorian Interschool Championships were held from 19-25 August at Mt Buller. Xavier College was represented from all 3 Campuses with students from Prep – Year 12. Congratulations to all competitors who participated with great enthusiasm, at times in freezing conditions. A special thank you to our parents who also participated in the event as Team Managers and Course Officials. These volunteers ensure our students can compete in their events with confidence and determination. This year we have had an extremely successful championship with record numbers of students qualifying for the National Championships to be held again at Mt Buller from 4 September to 8 September. Overall, Xavier College was placed 3

rd in the State Championships which is a tremendous achievement. Special congratulations to Francis

O‘Callaghan (Year 4 at Burke Hall) and Edward Elliott (Year 11) who both won events within their Divisions. Beef and Burgundy Dinner This year we had a great night with 270 of our closest friends. We had hoped we might get 200 after last year having 160 attendees. I am very proud of our main organisers Steve Lambert and Simon Purssey. These guys put in a huge amount of hours to pull together what was a fantastic night. It was also fantastic to see so many members of our Association who freely gave of their time to make everything run smoothly on the night. Thank you also to parents for their support of the night and it has been wonderful over the last few weeks to have so many of you saying that you had a great time.

Father/Child Camps Places are still available for the EY (Years 1-4) camp to be held this year at Mt Eliza from 12 to 13 October 2013. Try booking link: http://www.trybooking.com/CZMW For more information: http://www.camps.ymca.org.au/discover/camp-manyung.html For any further enquiries feel free to email [email protected] or call Joe Giaimo on 0417 557 570.

I also wish the Year 6 dads and boys a great time at Mt Eliza this weekend.

Year 8 Diary Note The Year 8 ―Big Day Out‖ will be held on Sunday 13 October 2013, so dads please reserve the date in your diaries. The day is designed around bringing the students from both campuses together with their fathers or guardians prior to their transition to Year 9. The activities will provide a chance for the boys to start to feel at home at the Senior Campus, a wonderful forum to meet other fathers and to make new friends. Our next BHFA meeting is on Wednesday 4 September 2013 at 7:30pm in the Burke Hall Board Room. All fathers are welcome to come along and hear from a school representative and about activities we are planning this year.
