INTERVIEW

PAU GALINDO FUENTES, FRONTENIS SUB-22 WORLD CHAMPION“ My challenge is to obtain medal in the world absolute championship “

Pau Galindo Fuentes studies fourth year of the Master in Law at the Uni-versity of Valencia. In the sports field 2011 supposed for him a whole set of emotions, happy moments and rewards, since he was proclaimed Sub-22 Spanish champion in Mexico, and thanks to the above mentioned title he was part of the Spanish selection Sub-22 that was going to take part in the World Sub-22 Cham-pionship of Basque Ball, in Frontenis spe-ciality. The national team, so much the women as male modality, was champion being the first time that the masculine Spanish team was managing to win the Frontenis sub-22 World Championship.

Question: how and when did you start competing?

Response: After a couple of years of contact with the frontenis and trainings with Jorge Frías in his Rocafort’s school, I started competing in frontenis in the program of Sports Municipal Schools of the FDM of Valencia, to the age of 12 years.

P: What dreams has as sportsman?R: My dream as sportsman is to con-

tribute with anything possible to promo-te the respect and the development of the sport in general, and speaking about frontenis especially; a sport or sports-man shouldn’t be “discriminated” not even hiseffort underestimated by the fact not to be a sport of masses. Any athlete bears many hours of work, su-ffering and illusion in order to achieve his/her dreams, and practising minority sports should be recognized. In addition my another dream turned into aim, is to obtain absolute titles that allow me to get sufficient merits as to be able to represent to the Spa-

nish selection of frontenis in the World Absolute one.

P: There is a great quantity of univer-sity students that do not play sports, what would say to them to encourage them to practise a sport?

R: Sport directs you to both physical and mental development, sport is hap-piness. In the physical plane it increases the physical capacity, relieves problems and pains, makes you feel good raising your self-esteem, etc. In the mental pla-ne it makes you more resistant before the adversities, creates and stimulates a spirit of effort and overcoming troubles that then moves to other areas of the life, helps to value yourself as a human being and to try to get the best out of you, etc. These are only a few benefits that undoubtedly the physical activity contribute.

P: What been the most emotive day of your sports career?

R: No doubt the 31-7-2011th, day in which I won the Sub-22 Frontenis World Championship (Mexico 2011) together with my companion and friend Paul Pe-ñate Ojeda, representing the Spanish team. It is an honour to add that it was the first time in the history that Spain won the Sub-22 Frontenis World Cham-pionship in masculine category.

P: As member of the Elite and High Le-vel Program of the UV, what advantages have you in your case?

R: The advantages are all kinds of faci-lities to combine the sports life with the academic life, by means of a tutor who always does what he can to help me. In addition we have an excellent physical therapist, Guillem Gil, in Blasco Ibañez’s campus, which besides being a great professional with a lot of experience he is very nice and brilliant. And thank you very much to the Physical Education and Sports Service for this interview.

P: After taking part in the Olympic Ga-mes what do you expect from this sea-

son?R: No doubt being able

to compete in absolute ca-tegory with a good level, bearing in mind that the great majority of my re-

sults have been in Sub-22category, and with the aim of obtaining title in abso-lute level.

P: It is the maximum participation of the students of the University of Valen-cia in the most important world compe-tition, the Universiade. Everything shows that the students of the University of Va-lencia have an enviable level.

R: It is true, the list of sportsmen and sportswomen included in the Top athle-tes’ program is very long, and most of them obtained the best titles of their respective sports.

P: Which is the key for an academic institution to have this level?, what does contribute to these excellent results?

R: Undoubtedly the Program gives many facilities in order that the sports-man could combine academic and sports life, offers many tools that allow the stu-dent to be motivated for taking part in university competitions.

P: Is it very different the athmosphere of a professional competition and a uni-versity student?

R: Yes, as I said before frontenis at the university competition it is a diffe-rent environment, almost only the stu-dents most compromised with the sport are those who end up by taking part, without looking at the level they have. The professional competition is more de-manding, recognition, cash prizes, even to manage to be a part of a Spanish se-lection.

P: Is it difficult to combine your Law degree with the competition sport?

R: Law is a degree that demands many hoursof study, therefore it beco-mes complicated to combine both. You have to train 4 days a week, in double session, and after that you have to com-pete, it is exhausting and it affects your performance day after day. Even this way the motivation for improving and for re-aching my aims does that year after year I start with renewed energy.
