CASE STUDY X-ray inspection improves cereal production process The Application The customer has 8 production lines all producing various breakfast cereals. In order to comply with HACCP and to protect their brand name, they embarked on a project to introduce X-Ray inspection technology into their business. The cereals are either boxed or bagged in a variety of pack sizes, at speeds averaging 60 packs per minute and with pack weights of between 350g and 1.5kg. Why Ishida was selected The combination of machine performance, user friendliness, price and support enabled Ishida to convince the customer to make this critical investment. Ishida Europe invested a lot of time and effort in preparing detection sensitivity reports for the customer, as well as undertaking on-site trials (the results of these trials can be seen overleaf). For this specific application Ishida were in competition with two other leading X-Ray suppliers. On-site trials were run by both Ishida and one of the competitors with Ishida winning in terms of user-friendliness and accuracy in contamination detection. The Result The first Ishida X-ray machine enabled the customer to reliably detect 1.2 and 0.7mm diameter stainless steel balls, 0.6mm x 5 mm stainless wire, 3-5 mm glass balls and 3-4 mm aluminium balls in each pack passing down the line. To date the company has installed IX-GA range X-ray inspection systems on six of their lines, enabling them to detect this level of contamination on all of the products leaving the plant, ensuring they maintain their brand name in the market as suppliers of high quality breakfast cereals. Sensitivity Trials

To demonstrate the capability of the Ishida IX-GA series sensitivity trials were undertaken on site and at Ishida.For these trials the standard Ishida contaminant test strips were introduced to the product. In terms of this specific trial the critical contaminant was stone. Ceramic test strips were used as this material is the closest fit due to its similar density to stone, which can often be introduced to the raw product during harvesting.
