Innovation Partnership ProgramS I N G U LA R I T YU N I V E R S I T Y

Leveraging exponentially growing technologies to drive powerful innovation.
Technological change is accelerating at an
exponential rate putting extremely powerful
technology in the hands of small and
nimble teams. While this poses signifi cant
threats to some industries, it also creates
extraordinary opportunities. At the same
time that billion dollar companies are going
out of business overnight, new start-up
companies are reaching billion dollar
market-caps in record time.
Pursuing breakthroughs requires
signifi cant risk taking and a tolerance for
serial failure at a time when companies are
becoming more and more risk averse.
Many large companies are fi nding it
increasing diffi cult to innovate internally
because of bureaucracy and cultural issues.
The Innovation Partnership Program
(IPP) was created to address these
issues, educate senior executives on best
innovation practices, allow them to share
experiences and create a forum for new
partnerships and continual learning.
ThIrTY seleCT CoMPAnIes
Collaborating with the brightest minds to learn, share and solve global corporate and grand challenges.
The Innovation Partnership Program is
limited to 90 senior executives from 30 select
companies who come together to learn, share
and solve global corporate challenges as well
as the grand challenges of the world.
As Innovation Partners, we gather together
twice a year for four-day intensive workshops
that include innovation education, hands-
on experiences, expert lectures, networking,
entertainment and Visioneering the future.
This audacious effort is produced by the
X PRIZE Foundation in association with
Singularity University. Participating companies
are united by their desire to understand the
impact of exponential technologies on their
company and industry, their need to increase
the rate of innovation inside their product
lines and organization, and thirst to learn
best practices for using crowdsourcing and
incentivized competitions.
JoIn us By Invitation Only.
You’re invited to join the Innovation Partnership
Program. We all share a common goal in solving
the grand challenges of our time. Today, the
world’s largest problems, including energy,
water, food, health and education, also represent
the world’s largest multi-hundred billion-dollar
business opportunities.
The Innovation Partnership Program is
central to the missions of both the X PRIZE
Foundation and Singularity University, which
are focused on developing and teaching best
practices for creating a powerful, incentivized
and innovative team.
X PRIZE Foundation has a proven track
record of achieving such breakthroughs with
world-class partners such as Cisco, Google,
Medco, NASA, Progressive, Qualcomm and Shell,
as well as the White House, FDA, DOE and dozens
of philanthropists.
Singularity University (SU) is a graduate-level
university specializing in leveraging exponential
technologies to solve humanity’s grand challenges.
The mission of Singularity University’s Graduate
Studies Program (GSP) is to assemble, support,
educate and inspire future leaders across the
globe who can harness the power of exponential
technologies to positively impact the lives of a
billion people within a decade.
A world-class, core faculty of experts lead the
studies and workshops, complemented by cutting-
edge practitioners and thinkers – experts in their
fi eld – who serve as guest lecturers, mentors
and advisors.
The team includes professors and researchers
from Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard
and other major educational institutions, and
seasoned executives from business, including
Autodesk, Genentech, Google, Cisco, Nokia, and
the Kauffman Foundation, ePlanet Ventures, and
others. Notable SU faculty and advisors include
Ray Kurzweil, Vint Cerf and Dean Kamen.
The X PRIZE Foundation is an educational
nonprofi t organization whose mission is
to bring about radical breakthroughs for
the benefi t of humanity and inspire the
formation of entirely new industries. The
Foundation addresses the world’s Grand
Challenges by creating and managing
large-scale, high-profi le, incentivized prize
competitions that stimulate investment in
research and development worth far more
than the prize itself.
X PRIZE has a longstanding heritage
of partnering with global leaders such
as Cisco, Google, Medco, Progressive
Insurance, Qualcomm Foundation and
Shell Oil Company as well as the best and
brightest minds in the world. Our illustrious
Board of Trustees consists of visionaries
and luminaries who recognize the power of
prize philanthropy to create fundamental
change in the world, including James
Cameron, Arianna Huffi ngton, Naveen Jain,
Ray Kurzweil, Elon Musk, Larry Page and Dr.
J. Craig Venter.
ANSARI x pRIZEThe very fi rst X PRIZE was awarded on
October 4, 2004, when famed aerospace
designer Burt Rutan and fi nancier Paul
Allen led the fi rst private team to build and
launch a spacecraft capable of carrying
three people to 100 kilometers above the
earth’s surface, twice within two weeks.
This audacious achievement ushered in a
new multi-billion dollar industry of private
spacefl ight, which will likely yield the way to
a multi-billion dollar space tourism industry.
pRoGRESSIvE INSuRANCE AutomotIvE x pRIZEThe Progressive Insurance Automotive
X PRIZE was a global competition that
awarded $10 million to three teams that
built cars that achieved at least 100 MPGe
in real world driving. The cars were safe,
affordable and desirable with the ultimate
goal of offering more effi cient vehicle
choices to consumers. Ultimately, the
competition has paved the way toward
greatly reduced emissions and exponential
gains in energy effi ciency.
wENdy SCHmIdt oIl ClEANup x CHAllENGEThe Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup
X CHALLENGE raised the bar of oil spill
cleanup to inspire breakthrough innovation.
The teams were required to more than
double the industry’s best oil recovery rate
by exceeding 2500 gallons per minute.
The fi rst place team nearly doubled that
requirement and subsequently created new
cleanup technology that will put an end
to the level of destruction caused by the
Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010.
Revolution through competition.
X PrIZe“The rapid acceleration of technology
is enabling small teams to conduct
exploration that was only possible by
national governments. The X PRIZE
Foundation helps to set and incentivize
audacious and worthy targets.”
James Cameron, Filmmaker
“I think the [Ansari] X PRIZE should
be viewed as the beginning of one
giant leap...”
Dr. Buzz Aldrin,
NASA Apollo 11 Astronaut
“The Automotive X PRIZE competition
will help us take a much needed step
forward in the fi ght to reduce CO2
emissions worldwide.”
Al Gore, Former Vice President
of the United States
“I am personally funding this X
CHALLENGE to inspire innovators
around the world—and all those who
want to help address what has happened
in the Gulf—to focus on solutions to an
ongoing, systemic problem.”
Wendy Schmidt, President of
The Schmidt Family Foundation

Days 1 & 2
ExpoNENtIAl tECHNoloGIES woRkSHopA number of exponentially growing
technologies will massively increase the
human capability and fundamentally
reshape our collective futures.
We employ a world-class faculty
who specialize in a cross-disciplinary
understanding of how transformative
technologies impact industries and
humanity’s grand challenges. During this
part of the workshop, Innovation Partners
receive an integrated overview of seven
key ‘exponentially advancing’ areas as
well as their potential implication and
opportunities. The curriculum educates
participants on what is in labs today, and
what is coming to market in two, fi ve
and 10 years and how these various
technologies work synergistically to drive
change for each member’s company
and industry.
Leading researchers, business leaders,
and thinkers share the stage and engage
in thought-provoking debates that
help members understand the
convergence among various disciplines
and technologies.
Following each session, executives will
participate in a Discussion and Refl ection
workshop, which will ask the following
company-centric questions:
• How will this technology affect our key
products and growth?
• How will this technology allow us
to solve specifi c key problems in
our company?
• How will this technology allow to us
to solve the grand challenges that our
company, employees and customers
care about?
During the workshop, three Innovation
Partners from your company will be paired
with three Innovation Partners from two
other companies to form a group of nine.
This curated pairing will allow you to gain
insights from executives outside of your
industry, who will offer a unique point
of view.

Days 3 & 4 Visioneering Workshop
Having blown your mind in our fi rst two
days, as to what is technologically possible,
the following two days will focus on
how to identify market failures, mitigate
potential threats and explore extraordinary
opportunities. We will provide effective
ways in which you can effectively leverage
crowdsourced solutions and how to design
incentivized competitions that will align
and benefi t your company, your industry
and your customers.
A well-designed competition is
the key to attracting and motivating
multidisciplinary and maverick players
to solve the many corporate and grand
challenges facing us today. The X PRIZE
Foundation utilizes a core process we call
Visioneering to evaluate the opportunities
for incentivized innovation that address
such challenges. The Visioneering is
process has been, and continues to
be, an effective way to drive radical
breakthroughs with clients ranging from
corporate fi rms and private donors to
governmental agencies.
tHE vISIoNEERING pRoCESS INCludES• Identifi cation of the market failure to
be solved
• Identifi cation of the root causes of that
market failure
• Clarity around the metrics being
measured

Interdisciplinary collaboration and
creative engagement are cornerstones of
this process, which X PRIZE Foundation
has deployed in dozens of fi elds with
a wide range of audiences and clients
including BT, Cisco, Google, Nokia,
Qualcomm, Shell, NASA, the White House,
FDA, DOE, USAID and dozens of world-
class philanthropists.
This strategic Visioneering process
will help members creatively explore the
challenges facing their companies and
