When you’re out walking the streets of Perth looking for a place to go, the last thing you want is a cumbersome book or magazine weighing you down, that’s why we’ve created the X-Press Pocketbook, your one-stop guide to all that is great in WA. And it’ll fi t in your pocket too. We’re not just focussing on the city centre of Perth, where business meets pleasure on a daily basis, but we head all over this great city of ours. If you want to get in with the hip kids, them maybe you ought to think about spending some time in Leederville or Mount Lawley where there’s plenty of bars, heaps of great food and some fashions you can set your wood-plated watch to. A more cosmopolitan experience can be had in the the heart of the golden triangle. Places like Subiaco, Claremont and Cottesloe are all about the swank. Top-tiered boutiques line the streets every which way. Several highways in Perth lead to Fremantle, and countless tourists think Fremantle is a different city altogether. Well they’re kind of right. Off come the shoes and comes the hair when you’re in out port city. We even cast our eyes to the splendid South West, which is well worth a gander or three even if you’re only in the west for a couple of days. Heck, when you’ve got as much to do as those who live in Perth, it’s worth bragging about. Sun, surf, shopping, dining, clubbing, live bands and more, you must be pretty dull if you can’t embark on your own adventure in this state! X-Press Pocketbook - we’ll show you around!

welcome

U-Ram Choe: John Curtin Gallery, BentleyStep into a world of kinetic sculpture that charts a path between art, science and cybernetics in U-Ram Choe’s fi rst solo exhibition in Australia, on display as part of the Perth Festival. Finely engineered steel and electronics are assembled into captivating forms evoking otherworldly fl ora and fauna – expanding, contracting and mimicking organic movement. Runs Feb 3-Mar 2.

Spaced: Art Out Of Place: Fremantle Arts Centre, FremantleExplore the relationship between globalisation and local identity with imaginative and stimulating works in sculpture, photography, painting, installation and multi-media. The culmination of a two-year cycle of residencies, this ground-breaking project involved 24 Australian and international artists spending time in 16 regional WA communities to consider their social and physical environments. Runs Feb 4-Mar 11.

Super Night Shot: Studio Underground, State Theatre Centre of WA, PerthRomance, action, strange men in rabbit masks, Super Night Shot has it all. This Perth Festival production proves that all the world’s a stage, as renegade theatre making collective Gob Squad sync their watches, pick up their video cameras and take to the streets of Northbridge exactly one hour before start time to make your show. Runs Feb 10-13.

Place Des Anges: St Georges Terrace (outside Council House), PerthCast your eyes to the skies as heavenly bodies glide, fl oat and careen through the air, leaving a burst of feathers in their wake. Beginning with a single quill, a trickle grows into an incredible cascade, a seemingly endless blizzard of white, showering you in two tonnes of downy bliss. Les Studios de Cirque have been creating unforgettable aerial spectacles around the globe for a decade - and this once-in-a-lifetime event on show as part of the Perth Festival places you in the centre of the action. Performance on Feb 11. Free event.

Festival Gardens: Perth Cultural Centre (outside the Museum), PerthThis year the Perth Festival bids Beck’s Music Box adieu in favour of the new Festival Gardens, nestled smack bang in the middle of the Cultural Centre. How often do you hear so-and-so has “the best beaches in the world”? Too many, we know! Well, with Perth you’d better believe it. So good are Perth’s legendary beaches that Spain was recently sprung using them in tourism advertisements, passing them off as their own. But you can’t blame them – our beaches are literally second to none. From Mullaloo in the north right down to Fremantle in the south, Perth’s beaches are defi ned by their crystal aqua blue waters, the endless horizons, fi ne white sand and legendary sunsets. Nothing – absolutely nothing – beats a pint at the Ocean Beach Hotel in Cottesloe as the sun plunges into the magnifi cent Indian Ocean. Pack your suncream and get ready for paradise.
