The Lobos jumped in front 28-7 and held on to win 38-28. Tonight, the added element of quar- terback Chad Allen’s playmaking ability changes the equation. “Probably the most impressive thing,” UNM coach Bob Davie said, “is the way he scrambles, keeps plays alive and then just makes unbelievable throws off the run.” The Wyoming defense is statistically among the worst in the nation, but UNM quarterback Lamar Jordan sees an aggressive unit that has 21 turnovers. Jordan is an unabashed fan of Cowboys free safety Andrew Wingard, the Mountain West Conference’s leading tackler. “He’s definitely gonna play on Sundays,” Jordan said. “... You’ve got to game-plan for him.” TROY BABBITT/UW MEDIA RELATIONS RANK IN MWC/FBS OFFENSE Points per game 36.2 4/29 Rushing YPG 342.1 1/1 Passing YPG 108.2 12/127 First downs 233 6/63 Pass yds. per catch 13.37 6/36 Completion pct. 53.0 9/115 Interceptions 6 3/19 Passing efficiency 124.98 8/84 Sacks allowed/game 1.0 2/9 TFLs allowed/game 5.0 3/23 Fumbles lost 7 7/53 3rd down pct. 44.0 5/36 4th down pct. 73.7 1/4 Red zone efficiency 87.8 7/37 Time of possession 34:53 1/2 Off. yards per game 450.3 3/40 DEFENSE Points per game 32.2 7/95 Rushing YPG 163.2 3/56 Passing YPG 229.5 9/68 First downs allowed 209 3/39 Interceptions 7 6/92 Pass def. efficiency 152.45 12/121 Sacks/game 2.18 6/57 TFLs/game 5.7 5/69 Fumble recoveries 4 7/111 3rd down pct. 37.1 1/39 4th down pct. 53.8 7/77 Red zone efficiency. 88.6 8/95 Def. yards per game 392.6 5/56 SPECIAL TEAMS/OTHER Kick returns avg. 23.11 3/26 Kick ret. def. /avg. 25.0 11/120 Punt returns 7.20 3/71 Net punting 35.53 11/101 Punt return def. 9.76 7/93 XPs made/att. 47/47 1 FGs made/att 11/12 2/8 Penalty yds/game 59.55 10/91 Turnover margin -0.18 8/83 NOTE: 128 FBS SCHOOLS, 12 MWC SCHOOLS RANKED SCOUTING THE COWBOYS COWBOY NOTES LOBO NOTES SCOUTING THE LOBOS The Lobos likely will be without leading rusher Tyrone Owens (foot) and starting nose guard William Udeh (knee) tonight. They surely will be missed, but UNM is fortunate to have depth at both positions. At running back, senior Teriyon Gipson and junior Richard McQuarley would absorb most of Owens’ carries. Junior Daryl Chestnut and sophomore Diquon Woodhouse are available as well. Senior Taylor Timmons and junior Johnny Wil- liams have shared work with Udeh at nose guard all season. Last year in Laramie, quarterback Lamar Jordan rushed for 147 yards and a 56-yard touchdown in a 38-28 victory over Wyoming. The Cowboys have been hurt by the quarterback run this season as well. UNLV’s Kurt Palandech rushed for 157 yards and a 76-yard touchdown in the Reb- els’ 69-66, three-OT upset win Nov. 12. The Cowboys, coming back from a 20-13 third-quarter deficit, got a 78-yard touch- down pass from quarterback Jim “Missis- sippi Gambler” Walden to Dick Hamilton with 2 minutes left to cement the come- back. The win gave Wyoming the Skyline Conference championship while eliminat- ing UNM from title contention. >>> Wyoming nose guard Chase Appleby and Lobos quarterback Lamar Jordan were teammates at Centennial High School in Frisco, Texas. Appleby, though, will miss tonight’s game (and likely the Cowboys’ bowl game) due to a knee injury. >>> Cowboys linebacker Lucas Wacha is the younger brother of St. Louis Cardi- nals pitcher Michael Wacha. >>> Wyoming linebacker Eric Nzeocha is from Neusitz, Germany, and played German club football before coming to Laramie. >>> Former Lobos quarterback Ned James (1985-86) is subbing for former UNM running back DonTrell Moore tonight as the color man with Robert Portnoy in the KKOB-AM broadcast booth. In 1986, James ran and threw for 514 yards — sec- ond on UNM’s all-time single-game total offense list — in a 35-25 loss to Wyoming in Laramie. >>> Among the most momentous UNM victories over Wyoming was a 25-21 win in Laramie in September 1962. It was the first year of Western Athletic Conference competition. Wyoming, the preseason WAC favorite, hadn’t lost at home since 1959. Lobos running back Bobby San- tiago, an Albuquerque High graduate, threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jim Ottmann and returned a kickoff 97 yards for another TD. The Lobos went on to win the WAC title, their first of three in a row. >>> New Mexico and Wyoming have met 68 times. Only two schools — New Mexico State (107) and UTEP (78) — have faced the Lobos more often. ll

Last year in Laramie, the UNM defense sold out against the rush and held Wyoming star run-ning back Brian Hill to just 49 yards on 17 carries. The Lobos jumped in front 28-7 and held on to win 38-28. Tonight, the added element of quar-terback Chad Allen’s playmaking ability changes the equation. “... You’ve got to game-plan for him.”

SCOUTING THE COWBOYS

COWBOY NOTES LOBO NOTES

SCOUTING THE LOBOS

The Lobos likely will be without leading rusher Tyrone Owens (foot) and starting nose guard William Udeh (knee) tonight. They surely will be missed, but UNM is fortunate to have depth at both positions. At running back, senior Teriyon Gipson and junior Richard McQuarley would absorb most of Owens’ carries. Junior Daryl Chestnut and sophomore Diquon Woodhouse are available as well. Senior Taylor Timmons and junior Johnny Wil-liams have shared work with Udeh at nose guard all season. Last year in Laramie, quarterback Lamar Jordan rushed for 147 yards and a 56-yard touchdown in a 38-28 victory over Wyoming. The Cowboys have been hurt by the quarterback run this season as well. UNLV’s Kurt Palandech rushed for 157 yards and a 76-yard touchdown in the Reb-els’ 69-66, three-OT upset win Nov. 12.

>>> Among Wyoming’s biggest wins over the Lobos was a 25-20 victory at UNM’s Zimmerman Field in 1959. The Cowboys, coming back from a 20-13 third-quarter deficit, got a 78-yard touch-down pass from quarterback Jim “Missis-sippi Gambler” Walden to Dick Hamilton with 2 minutes left to cement the come-back. The win gave Wyoming the Skyline Conference championship while eliminat-ing UNM from title contention.

Louis Cardi-nals pitcher Michael Wacha.

In 1986, James ran and threw for 514 yards — sec-ond on UNM’s all-time single-game total offense list — in a 35-25 loss to Wyoming in Laramie.

>>> Among the most momentous UNM victories over Wyoming was a 25-21 win in Laramie in September 1962. It was the first year of Western Athletic Conference competition. Wyoming, the preseason WAC favorite, hadn’t lost at home since 1959. Lobos running back Bobby San-tiago, an Albuquerque High graduate, threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jim Ottmann and returned a kickoff 97 yards for another TD. The Lobos went on to win the WAC title, their first of three in a row.

>>> New Mexico and Wyoming have met 68 times. Only two schools — New Mexico State (107) and UTEP (78) — have faced the Lobos more often.
