THE PRIEST’S PRATTLE "Julian of Norwich, the fourteenth-century Christian mystic, said most simply but most radically that we are not just made by God, we are made of God." It is with this beautiful and hopeful turn of phrase John Phillip Newell opens his latest book, The Rebirthing of God (2015). He continues, "we are not just fashioned from afar by a distant Creator. We are born from the very womb of the Divine. This is why Julian so loves to refer to God as Mother as well as Father. She sees us as coming forth from the essence of the One who is the Source of all things". It helps from time to time to return to first principles. To remind ourselves of who we are, whose we are and why we are here. In the busyness of "church" we all too often neglect God. In focusing our efforts on organisation, we all too often lose sight of Christ. I recently shared a discussion with a retired priest. During our time together he said with clarity and love, "our role as disciples of Christ, lay and ordained, is not to bring people to Church, but to bring them to Christ, for Christ is far bigger than our buildings and institutions". One can not hold to an incarnational theology (God in all living things, revealed in Jesus at Christmas) and a Trinitarian God (God is relationship: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) while simultaneously holding to a God exclusive to any institutional church or earthly building. If God is incarnate (John 1:14) and trinitarian (Col. 1.15-

17), God really is love (1 John 4:8), light (1 John 1:5), peace (1 Cor. 14:34) and hope (Romans 15:13). God is universal, eternal, ultimate, always and everywhere. In this way, everything and everyone is sacred - to those with eyes to see and ears to hear (Matthew 13. 9-16). Whoever you are, whatever you do, wherever you might be, as St Augustine said of God, “You [God] were more inward to me than my most inward part and higher than my highest” (Confessions 3.6.11). Who’d want a God of human smallness and pettiness, of ego and exclusivity, a God we can box in, control, when the God of the scriptures is “one God... of all, who is over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:6). ‘God’ is a verb, not a noun. So do you consider yourself "made of God"? Do you consider your neighbour as "made of God"? How would you live your life, practice your faith, if you saw every living thing as "made of God" - as of one substance with the Divine? Pace e bene, Daniel+
