Huge congratulations to Tatum Fortune and Anna Jacobs who received their Trinity College London performance singing examination results recently. Both of them were awarded Distinctions, Tatum for Grade 7 and Anna for Grade 6. Wynberg has had the pleasure of listening to Tatum’s and Anna’s beautiful voices on numerous occasions, as part of the Vocal Ensemble and as solo performers. We are delighted that they have achieved these high awards and will follow their careers with interest.

Dear Parents

We have just said farewell to the Matrics of 2013 and we hope they have learnt something during their journey at WGHS, not only their academic work, but also some of Life’s lessons. There are many lists similar the one that I have used here, mostly anonymous, but perhaps this is a good time for us also to reflect on what we have learnt along our journey of life and what we continue to teach the children in our care.

Some nice thoughts: I've learned.... that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.I've learned.... that what we have done for ourselves alone dies with us. What we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.I've learned.... that one sincere apology is worth more than all the roses money can buy.I've learned.... that being kind is more important than being right.I've learned.... that I feel better about myself when I make others feel better about themselves.I've learned.... that having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.I've learned.... that you should never say no to a gift from a child.I've learned.... that I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help them in some other way.I've learned.... that no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to be silly with.I've learned.... that sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.I've learned.... that to ignore the facts does not change the facts. I've learned.... that simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.I've learned.... that we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.I've learned.... that once a relationship is over, if you experienced more smiles than tears, then it wasn't a waste of time.I've learned.... that life is tough, but I’m tougher! I've learned.... that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. I've learned.... that under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.I've learned.... never to humiliate another person. Always give him an honorable way to back down or out and still save face.I've learned.... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile. I've learned.... that if you are still talking about what you did yesterday, you haven't done much today.I've learned.... that when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.I've learned.... that the older I get, the smarter my parents become.I've learned.... that love, not time, heals all wounds .

The Golden Lion is the highest award given at WGHS. It is awarded to a learner who has excelled in one or more of the four pillars, who has an above-average academic record, whose attitude

towards school and whose character best display the qualities defined in our motto “Honour before Honours”, and who is a credit to her school and community.It is mainly for an extraordinary academic achievement that Lauren is recognised here. She studied History and English Language and Literature University of Cambridge AS Levels, attaining 91% for English and 93% for History, a double A in these international examinations. Even better, she achieved 1st position in South Africa in both these subjects. There are very few true all-rounders at school, successful in every pillar. Anna has achieved the pinnacle in the four pillars of the school and has been awarded school colours in each pillar: Academics, Culture, Service and Sport. WOGU PILLAR TROPHY WINNERS

The highlight of the annual Achievers’ Dinner was the announce-ment of the winners of the WOGU Pillar Trophies. The air was electric and rapturous applause followed the announcement of Kate Bell and Laeeqa Allie as winners of the Academic and Service Trophies respectively. There was even more applause when Anna Jacobs was announced as winner of both the Sports and Culture Pillar Trophies ! [Read more about the dinner inside.]

The President’s Award: to empower young people between the ages of 14 and 25, by providing a balanced, non-competitive framework for self-development that will increase their self-esteem and enhance their capacity to achieve in whatever context they find themselves: enabling them to become responsible active citizens within their communities.

Monique Ewen has been working towards the President’s Award since 2011, when she received her Bronze Award. The Silver followed in April 2013. For the Gold Award, Monique particularly enjoyed the residential project: I spent 4 nights and 5 days in an underprivileged school in Robertson where we painted the classrooms. I didn’t know anyone when I arrived but by the second day it felt like we had all been friends for ages. There was also a group of 19 Dutch and 3 Ghanaian award participants there. I was awarded my Gold on 25 September 2013 and attended an award ceremony in October which was attended by PresidentJacob Zuma, and by their Royal Highnesses, the Earl and Countess of Wessex. The ceremony was hosted by the President’s Award and took place at the Table Bay Hotel in the Waterfront. It was an amazing experience, one that I will never forget.

ACHIEVERS’ DINNER

Our annual Achievers’ Dinner was held at Simon’s at Groot Constantia on 3 October, and what an occasion it was for our most talented and dedicated students from our four Pillars – Academics, Culture, Service and Sport. Past pupil, Emma Bryce, was our guest speaker. Emma studied at UCT and New York University and has written for The Guardian and the New York Times. (How exciting to think that a previous WGHS Web Committee Press Officer has worked for the New York Times!) Emma reminded us all that success should not have an end point, and that we should be open to life pulling us away from our self-determined path, to our real destiny, perhaps off the beaten track. She reminded us that things may not always go according to plan, but that we should always trust ourselves and our instincts, and above all, never give up. VALEDICTORY

Possibly the biggest event in any learner's school career, is ironically the ending of it – the Valedictory ceremony, the ceremony which is a culmination of twelve years of schooling, a recognition of development and success, and a final farewell to what for many has become more than a school, but a home. As has become traditional, the Valedictory celebrations involved the matrics dressing up in costumes and parading the grounds. The Matric Memories Committee put together an incredibly moving film which captured five years' worth of highlights and memories. The next video was a thank-you video which superimposed matric learners thanking different subject departments with the good luck messages from the teachers. Lauren Gildenhuys thanked the staff and the Matrics sang 'You'll be in my heart' by Phil Collins as a farewell to the school. The Grade11s replied with a song of their own, and then came the much anticipated teachers' farewell song. The Matrics left the hall cheering 'Wynberg Bulela'.

Finally the Matrics led into the hall for the last time, joining their parents and families already there. Mr Burrell introduced our guest speaker, Capt. Jane Trembath. Capt. Trembath delivered an enter-taining and riveting speech, giving the girls sound advice on

how to achieve one's goals in life. She reminded us that our weaknesses are sometimes just our strengths being used incorrectly, and challenged us to be in charge of our own destinies. Her speech was well-received by the audience and her life story

is testament to the fact that as a Wynberg Girl one can go anywhere and do anything. Matric music pupil, Tatum Fortune, then performed a beautiful rendition of V'adoro, Pupille by Handel. Then it was time for the matric prizegiving, during which honours certificates, subject prizes and special awards were handed out. Significant was that the approving applause from the matrics for each winner left no doubt that the winner had been well-chosen. After a moving performance of Bridge over troubled water by Paul Simon by the vocal ensemble, Lauren Gildenhuys gave her farewell speech which captured what it meant to be a part of the Class of 2013, but also the spirit of Wynberg. It received a standing ovation from her peers and left few dry eyes in the audience.

It was appropriate that after this the leaders handed over their badges to Mrs Harding, symbolising their handing over the mantle of leadership to the Class of 2014. Then it was Mrs Harding's turn to reflect on what had been

unique about the Class of 2013, what they had achieved, and her hopes for their futures. The Matrics then stood to face their teachers and sang their farewell song, Little Wonders, by Rob Thomas, and in a gesture of thanks turned to face their parents mid-song. They remained standing

for their school song, which was sung loudly and proudly for the last time in the hall. Leading out of the hall for the last time, the Matrics then made their way to the Sacred Grass and, surrounded by the staff, looked on as Lauren released a bunch of gold balloons into the sky, symbolising their leaving and the start of their journey into the greater world. The ceremony was a beautiful ending to their high school careers and will no doubt be forever etched into their memories as an occasion which captured the spirit of their home and school, Wynberg.

Capstone hosted a Matric farewell on 15 October, to thank every matric who has been a part of Capstone in some way over the years. Mrs Hartmann presented everyone with a powerful piece of scripture, to bless the girls for what lies ahead of them, knowing that they walk with Jesus.

MATHS LITERACY OLYMPIAD

Congratulations to these girls who have passed their FirstAid Level 3 examination.

Congratulations to Nicole Botha in Grade 11 who was awardeda Silver Certificate. The following girls were awarded Bronzecertificates: Katso Otukile (Grade 11), Monique Ewen (Grade 12),Samantha de Jager (Grade 12) and Chelsea Tuck (Grade 12.)

The Capstone committee attended the Christian Union's annual October leadership camp from 18-20 October at Rocklands, Simonstown. The girls enjoyed reconnecting with God, and with each other, and gaining insight from other Christian Unions at schools such as Rustenberg, Rondebosch and Plumstead High. It was a packed programme of worship, fun activities and discussions. It was an incredible weekend and one of the many highlights was climbing up to "the big rock" to experience, unfortunately, a strong wind, but also the beauty of the surrounding ocean and mountains.

On Saturday 5 October, Wynberg volunteered at the annual Pick‘n Pay Women’s Walk at the Kenilworth Racecourse (co-hosted by Pink drive and part of an initiative to raise funds for free cancer screenings and health advice in local communities). They braved the chilly conditions to hand out water along the route, collect donations for the Pink Drive, hand out medals and provide words of encouragement to the participants in the race. It was great fun for all the girls involved. and we look forward to returning next year!

This was a Peninsula Tour to remember! On 23 September, the Grade 10 Geography students embarked on their annual trip around the Peninsula. Starting at Signal Hill, they made their way to Green Point, Sea Point, Queen's Beach, Camps Bay and ended in Hout Bay. They viewed various rock types and geographical features. Lunch was eaten on Camps Bay beach and everyone enjoyed the beautiful ocean. All in all, this was a most enjoyable learning experience. Jessie Leverzencie

On Thursday 24 October, the Swimming team participated in an individual gala at Herschel. It was a gorgeous day which meant everyone was enthusiastic and eager to participate. Wynberg improved on last weeks' gala performance with most girls improving on their personal times. Individually there is a lot to work on (starts and finishes) but that comes with practice. GRADE 11s GET PHYSICAL

Grade 11 Science students were invited to attend the UCT 'Phenomenal Physics' Open Day on Thursday 17 October. It involved a series of presentations from representatives of the various Physics faculties. It was both comical and incredibly interesting to see them defy our understanding of the properties of rubber, weight distribution and lighting. From pouring liquid nitrogen all over their desks, to magnetic fields, to levitation, and then finally, an exploding coke bottle! The UCT physics department literally went out with a bang!

If we were asked to describe October, we would all answer busy, busy, busy! Everyone is busy but not in the way we in the hostel have been. wonderful afternoon. There was lots of laughter, eyes looking to the future and hearts ready to move to the next step in Life’s great adventure. The very next evening, the Grade 11s, who had raised money through running the Hostel Tuckshop, hosted an ‘Oscars’ formal farewell dinner for the Matrics who were each allowed to invite a teacher to share this momentous occasion. The Grade 11s gratefully handed over the tuckshop key to the Grade 10s and the Matrics 2013 handed over their badges to the 2014 Matric leaders. It was a fantastic evening and one that will hopefully be repeated every year.

Next event on our busy schedule was the Wynberg Girls’ Junior School market: we saw our weeks of hard work and dedication come to fruition. We had such fun making the jewellery and cards and even more fun selling the goods. To our delight we made more money than we anticipated and we will now be deciding how to spend the money!

WATERPOLO

Georgia Mingo received two bronze medals. She also received her Western Cape colours from Kobus Visser, and was included in the Senior A team.

On 15 October, Wynberg’s 2nd tennis team played against St Cyprians. Congratulations to Jamie, Chelsea, Tyler and Sara - they won 5-1.

TENNIS

vs Bloemhof: Friday 11 October: We played our first Waterpolo matches of the season against Bloemhof who were, unfortunately for us, stronger on the day.

1sts: lost 2-5 U16A: lost 1-11 2nds: lost 0-11 U16B: lost 3-9

The 1st team game was very intense. Demi Steenkamp managed to save many goals with extremely good hands. Christine Abrahamse was the star of our game: she scored both goals from extremely good interceptions. Better luck next time, Wynberg, and a huge thank-you to everyone who supported our teams.

SHOOTINGCRICKET MARTIAL ARTSOn 21 & 22 September, Yumna Isaacs competed at the NMA Destiny ISKA Tournament held at the Velodrome in Cape Town. At the Destiny tournament fighters compete in different Martial Arts. Yumna competed in 3 Events and won 2 Gold Medals and 1 Bronze Medal. In the Individual Kata Event,

Yumna won her division and then went on to win the Trophy and the title of Grand Champion. She has qualified to represent SA and will participate at the ISKA World Martial Arts championships in Florida, USA in July 2014.

On 25 October, the WGHS 1st Tennis team, D Arries, K Nicholls, S Wiegand & I Evans, played against Jan van Riebeeck and beat them 6-2. Well done, girls!

HOCKEY

vs Sutton, UK: 23 October: Wynberg’s new look 1st team played against Sutton, a touring team from the UK: with the matrics now gone, it was an opportunity to put some new players to the test and to try out different combinations. This proved to be the most successful aspect of the afternoon! Wynberg had a frustrating afternoon: although there were several good attacks, the ball would not go into the box. This and some good goal-keeping on both sides was also responsible for the final 0-0 draw.

Unfortunately, the 2nds were not successful against the Camps Bay 1st team on the 29th, losing 1-5.
