Thank you for the world so sweet, Thank you for the food we eat. Thank you for the birds that sing, Thank you, God, for everything.

Hear these words from the letter to the Hebrews (13:1-6, NRSV)

Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that, some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured.

Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for Jesus has said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Then we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”

A Reflection ~

The Assurance of God’s Grace & Pardon . . . and following, all say - Thanks be to God.

Hymn 795 “Healer of Our Every Ill” (remain seated & sing)

A Time of Confession (all read the bold)

Lord, tell me ~ When did we see you, Lord?

I was hungry, starving ~

And I was full.

Thirsty ~

And I was watering my lawn.

I had no road to follow, was without hope ~

And I called the police and was relieved when they took you away.

I was barefoot, with ragged clothing ~

And I complained about nothing to wear this morning.

I was sick, and you asked ~

“Is is contagious?”

I was in jail ~

And I thought, “Well, that’s where your kind belongs.”

Lord, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on me.

This Fall, the Faith Explorers adult Sunday School class that meets in room 207 just off the Fellowship Hall will be studying the weekly Bible selections of

the Lectionary for each Sunday. Classes will start the week of September 15th at 9 am. In addition to the four lectionary readings from the Bible, we will also study the connection to one of the hymns to be sung in wor-ship each week. We will leave the singing to the choir in worship, but take a look at who wrote the hymn, what occasion prompted the writing, how the music was composed that carries the words of the hymn, and its relationship to the lectionary readings for that Sunday.

The Forum

Adult Sunday School class is excited to be

starting a new program for September. We

will be subscribing to the Wired Word, a

current event Christian discussion program.

We will send out the topic each week for a

quick read ahead and then meet at 9 am

Sunday morning to discuss. Please join us in room 209 for

this interesting discussion of Christian life topics lead by

Rev. Dr. Bill Austin.

Wycliffe Golf Outing

Saturday, October 5th at Broad Bay Country Club.

We anticipate that our tee times will commence about 1:00 (more to follow on that). We would love to have not only men’s groups, but would love to have women players and youth players. Whole families can play as a team or the family members can be spread out among several teams. The format is Captain’s Choice Best Ball, so you don’t have to be good to play – and most of us are not. There will be a pot-luck dinner after the golf for the players, families, and golf fans. More details will follow, but save the date. If we can count on you to play, please notify Dave Carney 270-9979 or [email protected].

Office Hours

In observance of Labor Day, the office will be closed

on Monday, September 2nd. The office will resume

its regular office hours after Labor Day.

Dear Wycliffe Family,

On behalf of Barbara La Vigne’s entire family thank you so very much for all the thoughts, hugs and prayers you sent our way in memory of our Mom, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Wycliffe was a very special place for Mom during her 6 years in Virginia Beach. You have been so wonderful to her the entire time and the memorial service and reception where you helped us celebrate her life were both beautiful. With Love,

Barry, Robin and the La Vigne Family

September Youth Group Activities

September 15- Fall Kickoff Pizza Party in the Fellowship Hall at 5 pm.

September 29th-Brock Environmental Center’s Build an Oyster Cage Service Project and Tour.

All middle school and high schoolers are welcome. Bring a friend!

Hear these words from the gospel of Luke (1:1, 7-11 NRSV)

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the Sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable.

“When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited you both may come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then in disgrace, you’ll take the lowest place.

‘But when you’re invited, sit at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ’Friend, move up higher;’ then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

A Reflection ~ The Assurance of God’s Grace & Pardon . . . and all say: Thanks be to God.

The gospel lesson continues (Luke 14:12-14 NRSV)

Jesus said to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. You will be blessed because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

A Reflection ~

A Preparation for Prayer (all read the bold)

Let me fast from discontent . . .

And feast on gratitude.

Let me fast from anger . . .

And feast on patience and peace.

Let me fast from worry . . .

And feast on faith.

Let me fast from complaining . . .

And feast on appreciation.

Let me fast from bitterness . . .

And feast on forgiveness.

Let me fast from differences . . .

And feast on unity.

The Pastor’s Prayer followed by The Lord’s Prayer (p. 34, hymnal)

Round this table, here to pray, first we thank you for the day, for our family and our friends, gifts of grace that heaven lends. Living water, daily bread, countless blessings our God sends.

Thank you, Lord, for them all, for the great ones and the small. When we’re happy, when we’re sad, we are grateful, we are glad.

Come to the Welcome Table

The offering is received ~

“I Come with Joy” text: Brian Wren, arr. Zebulon Highben

I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved, and free, the life of Jesus to recall in love laid down for me, in love laid down for me. I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, a new community of love in

Christ’s communion bread. As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends. The Spirit of the risen Christ, unseen,

but ever near, is in such friendship better known, alive among us here. Together met, together bound by all that God has done, we’ll go with joy to give the world the love that makes us one, love that makes us one.

The Eucharist *Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

(the congregation may be seated as the prayer continues)

First Response: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth and sky and sea; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Second Response: Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee - How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee - How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

Sharing the Bread and Cup

All sing the refrain at the direction of the soloist.

The Prayer after Communion

*The Benediction (as a response, all repeat the refrain above on the facing page)

Join us for coffee & conversation in the fellowship hall

(to the left when you leave this space).

The Kingdom (all read the bold)

The kingdom of God is like a seed planted in a heart slowly, silently stretching it beyond family and friends, church and nation, until one day that heart bursts open revealing a Table

wider than the world, warm as an embrace. To this Table everyone is invited,

no one is a stranger, no one unfit.

Each brings a gift, work of one's own hand - a morsel for the Table - and there is always enough.

Enough, because no one keeps hidden the bread of the morrow; enough, because in the sharing is the miracle of multiplication. And from this Table each rises strengthened by a morsel and a sip,

with hearts newly seeded with Christ’s love.
