The outstandingexpressive and technical prowess of flautistsgraduating from those classes at the ParisConservatoire saw numerous composers paying theinstrument serious attention in the 20th century, andeven today you will struggle to find a leading flautistwithout a ‘six degrees of separation’ musical ancestrythat is traceable to Taffanel.

HANSGEORG SCHMEISER began his music studieswith Gottfried Hechtl at the Academy of Music in hishome town of Graz. He followed this by studying withAlain Marion in Paris and Wolfgang Schulz at theVienna Academy of Music, from where he graduatedwith distinction in 1982. In 1982 he was engaged assolo flautist at the Volksoper in Vienna. Since 1984 hehas taught at the Vienna Academy of Music, nowUniversity of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, asAssistant Professor to Wolfgang Schulz beforebecoming appointed a full professor responsible for hisown flute class in October 2000. His busy programmeof solo and chamber music work has taken him all overEurope and also to Japan, Taiwan and Korea, where heregularly gives masterclasses as well as makingregular guest appearances with the ViennaPhilharmonic.

FRENCH SUITES (BWV 812-817)AND FRENCH OVERTURE (BWV 831)

Bach composed three sets of suites for clavier: sixEnglish Suites, six French Suites, and six Partitas. TheEnglish Suites are the earliest, dating mostly to Bach’sWeimar period. The French Suites, written in Cöthenbetween 1722 and1725, occupy the middle period, andthe Partitas are the latest, written during Bach’s time inLeipzig and published as the first book of theClavierübung in 1738. The French Suites are smaller, more modest works than the English Suites and thePartitas, more “gallant” and more idiomatic in styleand execution—less dramatic and contrapuntal thanthe English Suites, less ambitious and sophisticatedthan the Partitas. Vladimir Feltsman

Pianist and conductor Vladimir Feltsman is one ofthe most versatile and constantly interesting musiciansof our time. His vast repertoire encompasses musicfrom the Baroque to 20th-century composers. The Lodger forms part of a select group of British stageworks with a horrific or supernatural theme. In Tate’sopera, what she referred to as ‘the sinister element’ issubtle and suggested rather than exaggerated orgratuitous and moments of genuine tension arejuxtaposed with other non-sensational elements suchas the burgeoning romance between Daisy and Joe andthe local colour of the chorus’s music hall number. Thecomposer’s natural gift for extended, lyrical lines andher capacity to build and dispel tension assist inlending distinction to an atmospheric and cogentlyconstructed piece of music theatre.

“It has long been a dream of mine to record the musicof Sergey Prokofiev. As a child growing up in theSoviet Union my introduction to Prokofiev’s musicwas through Peter and the Wolf, Cinderella, The Loveof Three Oranges and the Violin Sonatas, beautifullyplayed by my mother. In my teens I was practicallyobsessed with Prokofiev’s work of genius Romeo andJuliet. Later I was lucky enough to perform all ofProkofiev’s chamber works, and perform in some ofhis symphonies, and I discovered the full amazingspectrum of his compositions. My partnership withpianist Olga Sitkovetsky has lasted more than twentyyears, her knowledge of the musical era and herparticular attitude to the sound in the later Sonatas addgreatly to this recording.”

Taking New York’s “A” Train to Duke Ellington’s Harlem office inspired pianist-composer-arranger-lyricist BillyStrayhorn (1915-1967) to create his most famous work, signalling the start of a 27 year-long collaboration with theDuke. With Lush Life Retrospective celebrates the centenary of this relatively unsung jazz genius, who notewriterDigby Fairweather describes as “one of jazz music’s most prodigious yet obscured talents”. This unique collectionis drawn solely from the Ellington-Strayhorn recorded canon (apart from the ‘bonus extra’ of Nat King Cole’sinterpretation of Lush Life), and covers every aspect of Strayhorn’s work as both pianist and composer. All hisfavourite, often botanically-flavoured, numbers are here – Passion Flower, Chelsea Bridge, Lotus Blossom,Raincheck, Johnny Come Lately etc. – some from both the full Ellington orchestra and his own solo piano. In factthere are 14 tracks from this most famous of all jazz orchestras, plus 14 either solo performances or Strayhorn-Ellington duets, plus 15 more that spotlight the inimitable alto saxophone artistry of Billy’s friend JohnnyHodges, who was the supreme interpreter of Strayhorn’s poetic music.
