J.S. BACH THE SONATAS

& PARTITAS FOR SOLO VIOLINTRANSCRIBED FOR GUITAR BY ELIOT FISK

Catalogue Number NI 2581/2

Total Playing Time 2hrs 3 mins

Guitarist Eliot Fisk is known worldwide as acharismatic performer famed for his adventurous andvirtuosic repertoire. He is also celebrated for hiswillingness to take art music into unusual venues(including schools, senior centres, logging camps andprisons). After 45 years before the public he remains ashis mentor Andres Segovia once wrote, “at the top lineof our artistic world.”

I am delighted that Nimbus Records is re-releasing myrecording of the Bach 6 Sonatas and Partitas for soloviolin. Indeed there is no end to these works. They arelike the Himalayan Mountain chain: they were herebefore us; they will be here long after we are gone andforgotten. Clearly ideas about such monumental worksmust change over a lifetime. Undoubtedly I wouldtoday do many things differently than they are hererecorded. Yet I still embrace what is presented hereand hope my listeners will do likewise.

Stefan Warzycki began learning the piano at a veryearly age and entered the San Francisco Conservatoryof Music when he was just 16 years old. Aftergraduating he moved to London to complete hisstudies and has pursued his career from there eversince as a pianist and piano teacher. He has performed, mainly as solo recitalist, in numerous locations in theUK and continental Europe. He has also done concerttours in Japan and (as a representative of the ArtisticAmbassadors Program run by the US InformationAgency) in the major cities of six South Americancountries.

Some years ago Stefan’s right hand fell victim tofocal dystonia, an enduring neurological disorderwhich impairs flexibility and co-ordination of thefingers. After recovering from the initial shock of thisdisheartening experience. He reinvented himself as aleft-handed pianist, rising to the challenge of makingone hand do the work of two and discovering, in theprocess, a new and unexpectedly extensive repertoireof interesting, exciting and challenging music, to whichhe is adding by commissioning new works fromcontemporary composers and making his own lefthand arrangements of suitable classics.

The selection of music on this his first solo discprovides an introduction to the work of left-handpiano music and shows what it is possible to achieve, not just technically but - above all - musically, usingjust five fingers. Some items will perhaps be familiar intheir own right or in other guises; others are rarelyperformed - undeservedly so - and even more rarelyrecorded, while one is entirely new.

Part of a major series of recordings of works byAugusta Read Thomas being released by NimbusRecords, this CD originates from a concert bymusicians of the University of Illinois, which tookplace on December 9th 2014 in celebration of Thomas'50th birthday. The works of Thomas gathered here cover arelatively short span in this composer's chronology –just 13 years from the earliest work (Bells Ring Summer, from 2000) to the most recent (the song TwilightButterfly, from 2013). Thomas the large-scale thinker isvery much on display here, with two substantialorchestral works dominating the proceedings. ButThomas the deft miniaturist is also present, with abrace of vocal and instrumental jeux d'esprit writteneither for specific occasions or as personal messages tofriends and colleagues. If there is a larger theme to begleaned from this grouping of apparent extremes fromThomas' output, it would surely be that for this of allliving composers, music acts as the ultimate means ofcommunication, be it in the shape of a ceremonialorchestral work such as Radiant Circles, or a surprisewedding gift such as Capricci. The largest work presented here is the gentlymeditative and brazenly celebratory, Astral Canticle, for flute, violin and orchestra. It was premiered onJune 1st 2006 by flutist Mathieu Dufour and violinistRobert Chen under Daniel Barenboim as part of hisfinal concerts as the Chicago Symphony’s MusicDirector. The work's two soloists are heard only verylightly supported, and their alternation with thefanfaresque sections which showcased the ChicagoSymphony's legendary brass section imparts the worka "call-and-response" quality. The music's harmonicenvironment moves seamlessly from the opendiatonicism of the chant-like solo lines at the openingthrough dissonances which are bracing without everbeing abrasive. Such harmonic flexibility seems toembody Thomas' own words: “Old music deserves newmusic and new music needs old music”

MALCOLM LIPKIN

SYMPHONIES NOS. 1-3

Malcolm Lipkin belongs to a generation ofcomposers who came to prominence in Britainbetween the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s. Several ofthese figures began their careers as a ‘progressive’,exploring the newly-discovered range of technical andformal innovations before later forging their ownrelationship with tonality. In Lipkin’s case, earlyinfluences such as Bartók and Stravinsky weregradually assimilated into an original voice as hisscores moved from long, lyrical lines and motor-rhythms to tiny motifs and rhythmic cells in a moredissonant style. His skill at building convincingstructures out of flexible, protean material has guidedhim towards traditional instrumental forms, in all ofwhich he has something unique and worthwhile to sayand his impressive technique has ensured those ideasare conveyed with the utmost clarity and conviction.

Malcolm Lipkin’s three symphonies stand atdecisive points in his creative life. Each represents asumming up of his previous musical development andinitiates stylistic changes worked out in subsequentcompositions. They have the integration and scope ofa natural symphonist whose fastidious approach to hiscraft makes him well qualified to meet the exactingdemands of the medium. It is to be hoped this releasewill generate interest in a composer who has steadilyforged his own path regardless of passing trends tocreate a body of work of impeccable integrity whichstill largely awaits rediscovery.

SIR ARTHUR BLISS

THE BEATITUDES

Following demobilisation from the army in 1919,Bliss wrote four exploratory essays in sonority andtextures, including Madam Noy and Rout. Theyaccorded him a short-lived reputation as an enfantterrible but they can also be said to have paved the wayfor his first large-scale orchestral work, the ColourSymphony. The ‘witchery song’ Madam Noy (1918) is writtenfor soprano, flute, clarinet, bassoon, harp, viola anddouble bass, a bizarre variation on the old nurseryrhyme ‘Old Mother Hubbard’. Rout is used in the oldsense of popular revelry, and is a vibrant score evokingthe snatches of song which might be caught bysomeone watching a carnival from an open window.Bliss made up a series of nonsense syllables for thesoprano soloist chosen for their phonetic effect. For the rarely encountered scena for contralto andorchestra, The Enchantress , the text was supplied byBliss’s poet friend Henry Reed, who had suggested asetting of the ‘Second Idyll’ of Theocritus, in whichSimætha, rejected by her lover Delphis, uses witchcraftto entice him back into her arms. Bliss was ‘Master of the Queen’s Musick’ when hewas commissioned to write The Beatitudes for theFestival of 1962 to mark the opening of the newCoventry Cathedral. The first performance was besetby problems. Scheduling difficulties chiefly connectedwith the premiere of Britten’s War Requiem, meant thatthere was no possibility of staging The Beatitudes in thecathedral. A substitute venue was hastily arranged andBliss’s major choral piece made a hugely unsatisfactorydebut in Coventry Theatre on the evening of 25 May1962. In this hugely successful Proms broadcast from 31August 1964 the lyrical passages are particularlyaffecting. Especial highlights are Bliss’s ecstatictreatment of Herbert’s ‘Easter’ and the sensitivitywhich he brings to the directly communicativehandling of ‘I got me flowers to strew thy way’. Alsoquietly impressive is the rapt realisation of Taylor’s ‘OBlessed Jesu’ which culminates in an imposing, calmlyspacious closing ‘Amen’.

Douglas Lilburn (1915-2001) is considered 'thefather of New Zealand music'. After considerablesuccess, he rejected composing for acoustic musicalinstruments and turned wholly to the creation ofelectronic works because he felt they would moreaccurately portray New Zealand in its own right, without reference to European musical forms. Someworks are purely electronic; others were inspired bythe natural sounds of the sea or bush, or the writings ofleading New Zealand writers such as Allen Curnow,Denis Glover and Alistair Campbell.

The works, dating from 1963-1975, have beenrestored to a high sonic standard for digital release atAtoll's Auckland facility. The set includes a DVDcontaining two 4-channel works by Lilburn, with allextant film material of the composer, plus aninformative sound interview and photographs.

"From the perspective of the shiny, happy, plastic digitalpresent, it appears that the historical moment of analogue

audio has passed. Now a collection of the complete, remastered electroacoustic music of New Zealand

composition doyen Douglas Lilburn gives us pause toconsider the passing of analogue - as well as celebrate an

authentic musical voice. Produced by Aucklandindependent label Atoll, Douglas Lilburn, Complete

Electroacoustic Music contains three CDs and one DVD,boasting Lilburn's entire output of music created during

the 1960s and 70s using predominantly synthesizers"Tom Rodwell

Liszt’s complete musical style is evident in these workswhich range from virtuosic fireworks to sincerelymoving, emotional statements. Liszt’s recollection ofhis travels through Italy refers to the sights and soundsthat inspired and gave rise to some of his mostevocative music… “Having recently traveled throughdifferent settings and places consecrated by historyand poetry, having felt that the phenomena of naturedid not pass before my eyes as pointless images, andthat, between us a vague but immediate relationshiphad established itself, I have tried to portray in musica few of my strongest sensations and most livelyimpressions.”

ALICE FAYE

THIS YEAR’S KISSES

CENTENARY TRIBUTE

HER 28 FINEST 1933-1943

Celebrating her centenary, here is the finest singleCD tribute to the vocal artistry of glamorous AliceFaye (1915-1998), legendary movie star of the 1935-45era. Born Alice Jeanne Leppert, she was among themost beautiful and popular of all film musical stars. The quintessentially American snub-nosed blondewith the hourglass figure and open smile was themajor star of many Fox films. She had a huskyspeaking voice and a vibrant contralto that alsobrought her success as a recording artist after beingdiscovered by Rudy Vallée. Her first marriage was toa fellow Retrospective artist: singer Tony Martin (RTS4118).

This Year’s Kisses (one of 23 songs she introducedon screen that subsequently became hits!) traces hercareer from her early recordings with Rudy Vallée in1933 (Shame On You) through her many screensuccesses in films such as George White's Scandals1934 & 1935 (Nasty Man), King Of Burlesque 1936 (I'mShooting High), Wake Up And Live 1937 (There's ALull In My Life), Rose Of Washington Square 1939(My Man) and Hello, ’Frisco, Hello 1943 in which she“created” the great standard You'll Never Know.Eight tracks are taken from actual soundtracks.

Alice Faye still commands a loyal following thatwill welcome this truly representative, generouslyfilled CD selection from the star who reigned asQueen of Hollywood.
