Overview on Geo-Exchange Technology
1946 First successful Ground Source Heat Pump installed in Portland, OR
Primarily open loop systems until 1979, now almost all are closed loop
As of 2004, an estimated 12 GW of thermal capacity installed world wide
Each year about 80,000 units are installed in the US
How Geo-Exchange Works
• During the winter, the fluid collects heat
from the earth and carries it through the
system and into the building.
• During the summer, the system reverses
itself to cool the building by pulling heat
from the building, carrying it through the
system and placing it in the ground.
• This process creates free hot water in the
summer and delivers substantial hot water
savings in the winter.
Why Does WMS Promote Geothermal
Energy Efficiency
Improves system load factor
Is a dispatchable renewable energy source
Lowers customers energy costs
Economic development
Energy Efficiency
The GSHP is one of the most efficient residential heating and cooling systems available today, with heating efficiencies 50 to 70% higher than other heating systems and cooling efficiencies 20 to 40% higher than available air conditioners. That directly translates into savings for you on your utility bills.

Improves System Load Factor
Lowers Energy Costs
The average customer will save $580 dollars per year
After approximately 22 years they will “break even” and begin to save even more money
WMS will also be saving on power generation
