It’s You, Not Me* Throughout our training we will be challenged to do many things. These challenges will come from your instructors, your dojang, your seniors, your peers and yourself. Some will seem easy while others tax your very being. Some challenges will be physical while others will be of the mind and spirit. These challenges, of course, are designed and put forth to enhance our training experience and promote and develop continuous growth. As a practitioner we will always have some sort of challenge to face. And as we face and meet each one, we will discover new things about ourselves - which will bring on new challenges. Training keeps us on the constant cusp of discovery. Challenge and discovery go hand in hand. To discover something we must face the challenge to find it, to face it. Again, many challenges will be laid out before us and with them many discoveries await, but unless we as the individual take the step to meet the challenge, to embrace what it is designed to do, we may never make new discoveries or uncover old ones.

The true responsibility of training lies with the individual. How you make it and what you make of it will determine what you get out of it. The challenges will be there for anyone who dares to step out of the circle. Others will share in the experience. At times we may face the same set of challenges. But in the end, the one who makes the difference is you, not me.

Hapkido Cross Pollination Our Association is vast and global. It consists not only of many diverse groups, clubs and members, but also boasts a diversity of leaders and students with individual ideas and needs; its immensity guarantees that we will never personally meet every member. This also posses a potential problem in training, teaching, and technique continuity, and therefore in Association health, stability and longevity. And although our leadership works tirelessly in creating venues for member gathering - Summer and Winter camps for example – I have recently come across another way; one in which we, as individual Clubs and members, can contribute. This past week our club (the Sunshine Coast Hapkido Club) was privileged with the presence of Mr. Brian Johnstone from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Mr. Johnstone is a blackbelt and he came hundreds of miles, from the next Province, to train with us, and with our Master, Mr. Shawn Phillips. After Mr. Johnstone left for home, I contemplated the effort and expense he had put forth in coming, his humility as a student while with us, his devotion to his art, and the myriad lessons he took home and deposited; the effort not only served him but us

also. Every moment we spent together –whether over dinner at our home, training in the club or walking to and from, we talked Hapkido. We talked the business of Hapkido (starting a school), the techniques we learned, the history we knew, Master Jung’s lesson ideas, and our ever favorite, Grand Master Hwang’s techniques. We gathered each night to talk and listen and train. Many years ago, one of the most important lessons for life-learning came to me: If one thinks himself the teacher, thinking the other the student, he deludes himself, for both are teacher and student. If we are open, we can learn from each other. This past week I learned that Mr. Johnstone’s sincere commitment to Hapkido benefited so many. He came to us to gain in training, but what he left with us was the importance of unity, and an understanding of the synergistic contribution each of us has to make to the health of the WHA. Suggestion: Invite a member from in or out of State or Province, and help offset the expense by billeting, offering up a second vehicle and/or providing meals. Travel to, and train at another club or visit one while vacationing. Attend a camp at least every two years (the level of commitment and pride in the Art rises considerable after having talked and trained with our President or Grand Master). Lastly, no matter what the current level of training, be prepared to learn, in doing so we may find ourselves simultaneously teaching. ESSENTIAL MARTIAL ARTS HOLDS FIRST WHA BLACK BELT TEST Written by Carol McKillican: HapKiDo 1st Gup at Essential Martial Arts of Greensboro, NC. Essential Martial Arts (Greensboro, NC) held their first WHA Black Belt testing on May 22, 2009. Testing for 2nd Dan were: Mr. Dug Weston, Dr. Bruce McKillican, Mr. Steve Thomas and Mr. Ron Farlow. Also testing for 1st Dan was Mr. Tony Kirkman. Assisting with the test was Mr. Jason Howell (1st Gup) and Mr. John Archer (4th Gup). Essential Martial Arts is owned and operated by WHA North Carolina Representative Monty Hendrix. Monty Hendrix was joined by Master Dan Piller in officiating the test. Spectators were treated to the testers’ best efforts in sparring, throws, takedowns and locks. Joining the students and family members from Essential Martial Arts were two visitors as far away as Kentucky. Prior to the beginning of the test, Master Piller

asked the testers why they were there that night. The consensus of the testers was that they were there to continue

on their HapKiDo journey. After the physical portion of the testing, Mater Piller and Mr. Hendrix asked questions of the testers. Using the answers provided by the testers, Master Piller gave a lesson in the journey that is HapKiDo. The testers were called forward and presented with belts to signify

their new ranks. In addition to this, Mr. Hendrix was presented with a new belt signifying his position as the World HapKiDo Association’s North Carolina State Representative.

On Saturday May 23, 2009, Master Piller also gave a seminar at Essential Martial Arts. Guests included WHA Life Time Member Mr. Joe Needham from Clemmons, NC as well non-WHA members

from Kentucky along with 25 Essential Martial Arts’ students. Master Piller was assisted by Mr. George Paulson as participants worked on basic wrist lock, turning breaks and takedowns. Master Piller broke down the intricacies of these techniques and allowed the students to work on each portion of the technique before combining them. Master Piller reminded everyone that techniques given to us by our instructors are like pieces of gold. We should cherish and polish them by practicing and making them our own. Additionally, after learning the techniques and practicing them, we should understand them before passing them on to other students. He explained that this is the way HapKiDo is spread. All in attendance enjoyed the seminar and came away with a full understanding of the techniques that were covered.
