The band gigged regularly in London pubs with their brand o f trad jazz and avant-gardehumour. T he Bo nzo s, as they were known, secured a record deal and in 1967 theyreleased their debut album ‘Go rilla’. The first track, ‘Co o l Brit annia’, became a phraseadopted in the late 1990s with the election o f a Labour government after 18 years o fConservative rule. Also on the album is ‘Deat h Cab f o r Cut ie ’ which is a parody onthe teenage tragedy songs such as ‘Teen Angel’ and ‘Tell Laura I Lo ve Her ’. Thetrack appears in T he Beat les film ‘Magical Myst ery To ur ’ and its title has beenadopted as the name for an American indie rock band. The album’s o ther track o f noteis ‘T he Int ro and t he Out ro ’ with its sublimely absurd made-up contributors such asAdolf Hitler on vibes and Count Basie’s Orchestra on triangle. However, among the fakemusicians playing their parts, Eric Clapt o n actually does feature on the track playingukulele.

Appearances on children’s TV show ‘Do No t Adjust Yo ur Set ’ between 1967 and1969 gave the band greater notoriety, not to mention a so lid comedy pedigree. Threemembers o f what would come to be the comedy group Mo nt y Pyt ho n – Eric Idle ,Michael Palin and Terry Jo nes – wrote and performed on the programme. T heBo nzo s appeared in a number o f sketches and Neil Innes has been referred to as theseventh Pyt ho n.

Th e Paul McCart ney-produced single ‘I’m T he Urban Spaceman’ became a bigsuccess in 1968. It was at this time that the band started to abandon their jazz rootsand focus more on psychedelic rock with a comedic twist. As well as being championedb y T he Beat les, they also accompanied T he Who on their US tour and supportedT he Kinks at Fillmore East in New York.

Fo llowing a two-year split, a few members o f the band reunited to release the album‘Let ’s Make Up and Be Friendly’. Viv St anshall passed away in 1995, a year prio r tothe band’s 40th anniversary gig. St anshall was ‘replaced’ on stage by comedians suchas Phil Jupit us and Paul Mert o n.

The album ‘Po ur L’Amo ur des Chiens ’ was released in 2007 – 35 years after theyrecorded their previous studio album.
