Y7 Homework: Term 3
Name________________________
Class: Tutor:______
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
Week 1
Week 2
Homework Guidance for Y7 Parents and CarersIndependent learnersWe are aiming to develop independent learners and appreciate that this is a skill that develops over time. This booklet contains all of the homework that will be set for term 3 and is broken down into weekly/fortnightly tasks for each subject. Students will be told which subject is set on which day and should record this on the front of this booklet. Teachers will give students the due date when they set the task in lessons and this should be recorded in their planners.
Will my child cope?Homework does not have to be completed at home. PCS offers homework clubs, where students have access to staff support and all the resources they need to complete homework to a high standard. The school and local library are also good spaces to work.
What is Show My Homework? All homework is collated in this booklet but the individual subject sheets have been uploaded to Show my Homework (an online homework calendar that allows students and parents to access the homework teachers have set from any computer). It’s simple. No password is necessary, either click on the link on our school website (www.phcs.org.uk) or go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/peacehaven.
Can I help?Yes, please do! However this does not mean completing the work for your child! You can help by: Logging on to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/peacehaven and looking at student
planners each evening to see what homework is set, the due date and what additional support material has been offered.
Providing a table, chair and quiet place to work – we know this can be difficult in homes with young children. If this is the case please encourage your child to attend after school clubs.
Showing an interest in what your child is doing and checking your child is presenting their work carefully.
Checking your child does not spend too little or too long on tasks, students should work for a maximum of 1hr a night on homework.
Contacting your child’s mentor if you have any concerns about homework.
Students with a special educational need in literacy should be encouraged to use a variety of methods to record their ideas including; mind maps, audio recording or an adult scribe.
Art Homework is project based and will be set over 2 weeks or 3 weeks depending on the task set.

Homework Choices for Coraline – Module 2-3 If the homework mentions a moment in the novel, please ensure that you have read up to this point before selecting it.
All Challenge Expert
Draw a character from the novel and add quotes from the text to show why you visualise them in this way.
Create a set of Top Trumps for the characters from the novel. You should decide on the categories and scores for each character.
‘Etymology’ means the origin and history of words. Sometimes words have changed their meanings several times and some dictionaries give you not only the definition of the word but also its etymology. The word ‘sinister’ is used a number of times in the novel. Find out what the word means and its etymology. Try to look it up in at least two different places, for example, a print dictionary, Wikipedia or www.etymonline.com. Write up your findings and why you think this word might appear so many times in the novel.
Use Google Image search to find two different versions of the Coraline front cover. Print these out and explain which one you prefer and why.
Is Coraline like any other novels you have read? Write a comparison between Coraline and one other novel. You might think Coraline or the Other Mother are similar to other characters or that the setting is similar in another book you have read.
Research stories that involve mirrors. You could start with Alice in Wonderland and Snow White. What is special about the mirrors in these stories? Using what you have found out about mirrors in stories and superstitions, write the opening of a spooky story in which mirrors are important.
Create your own front cover for the novel. Write a paragraph explaining why you have designed it in this way. Try to include themes and ideas from the novel.
Write a review of Coraline for the library VLE. Use quotes as well as your personal opinion to support your writing.
Create a box for the next class to open before they start to read Coraline. You could use a shoebox to hold your objects. You are aiming to interest the reader, but without giving away too much. Which 3-4 objects could you put in your box? Draw or collect real objects to put in your box. -Choose 3-5 short extracts from the text that would intrigue someone to find out what happens next.
Draw a powerful moment from the novel so far. Add at least three quotes from the text to your drawing.
Create a model of Coraline’s home. Use details from the novel to help you.
Research the illustrator, Chris Riddell. Find out which other books he has illustrated and about his own writing. Write a letter to Chris Riddell telling him what you enjoy about his illustrations and asking any questions you might have. Ask your teacher to post the letter to his
publisher!
Write a letter to a friend giving your opinions on the novel Coraline so far. Should they read it? Why/why not? Be specific!
Write a diary entry imagining you are Coraline after she meets the Other Mother. Describe her thoughts and feelings.
Extended writing: Choose your favourite moment in the novel and try to rewrite it to completely change the atmosphere. You should think about the adjective choices, sentence lengths and use figurative language (similes, metaphors etc.)
Choose a song that could be played when Coraline meets the Other Mother. Write a paragraph explaining your reasons for choosing this song.
Think about the types of music that could accompany this book. Create a playlist with one song for each chapter. Write down your reasons for choosing each song.
Write a song that could be used on the soundtrack for a film version of this novel. Try to choose a particular moment when this song could be played and how you could use it to create atmosphere. You could record it, if you want to!
Draw your favourite scene from the novel and write a paragraph explaining why it is your favourite.
If you were casting a film or play of this novel, who could play the main characters? Choose four actors and explain who they would play and why.
Extended writing: Write another chapter for the book. Where would you add the chapter? What extra detail could you add? For example, you could write a chapter about one of the ghost children’s experiences.
Create a film poster for Coraline which clearly shows at least one theme of the novel and at least one key event or setting. Add a tag line to your poster.
After reading the novel, ask your teacher for the Twitter template. Re-read the opening paragraphs of each chapter of the novel. Create a Twitter entry for each chapter on the template.
Extended writing: Write an alternate ending to the novel. Try to imitate Gaiman’s style.
Reading Journal Entry Expectations - There are notes on the type of reading journal entries that you could make on the inside front cover of your journal.
All Challenge Expert
Write about what happened – who, what where, why etc. Give a personal response to what you have read e.g. I really liked it when… or I couldn’t believe that ______ would really _________.
Write about your personal response to the novel you are reading. You should do this in a variety of ways: asking questions; making predictions about what you think will happen next and explaining your reasons; trying to spot and comment on patterns developing in the novel.
Reflect on your reading using subject specific terminology e.g. I really empathised with the character when… or I can infer from the use of language in the opening paragraph that…
You may begin to talk about how the novel is structured or how the author has used literary techniques to engage you as a reader e.g. The use of the narrative hook on page…really engaged me because…
