Schools Library Service -A Brief Introduction

Welcome to Northumberland Schools Library Service (SLS), where we aim to offer a comprehensive resource and advisory service to all our customers.

Our service is available via an annual Service Agreement to all Northumberland schools and to other bodies in the County concerned with education. We are also able to offer Service Agreements to independent schools and schools outside Northumberland County Council.

When you take out a SLS Service Agreement you immediately have access to professional & experienced staff & up to 300,000 resources.

The Schools Library Service operates from a main site at Hepscott Park, near Morpeth, with a smaller base in Hexham Library.

• supports you in improving literacy & promoting reading for pleasure by:– regular exchange of high quality books for your library and classrooms.– providing special collections of resources for specific pupils (reluctant

readers, visibility impaired pupils, pupils whose first language is not English, etc).

– stimulating your pupils reading through book talks, storytelling, reading initiatives, organising reading groups etc.

• supports information provision and the curriculum by:– providing high quality resources for your library and classrooms.– helping to evaluate & develop your school library.– organising information skills programmes to help your pupils develop the

confidence and ability to access information and turn it into knowledge.

• saves you time and saves your school money by:– delivering resources to and collecting them from your school each term.

– providing you with up-to-date resources in a cost effective way. Your pupils will have continuous access to newly published resources. These can be regularly exchanged, so you have no redundant or out of date stock.

– arranging significant discounts on books bought through our book purchase scheme. The scheme also makes the whole process of selecting and buying books much more efficient.

– arranging discounts, where applicable, on computerised library management systems.

Fiction for all ages and abilities CD and DVD collections



Resources (cont) All our resources are good quality, up-to-date items individually selected by professional librarians.You can borrow:

• Project loans – resources for your classroom – are put together on an individual basis to fulfil your specific needs. – generally consist of a selection of non-fiction titles but might also

include appropriate fiction titles, audio/visual materials and artefact packs if you have requested them.

– are delivered to your school at the beginning of term and collected at the end of term.

• Books – for your school library, your classroom, or both– fiction & non-fiction for all ages and abilities.

• Special Collections– special book collections for reluctant & struggling readers, pupils whose

first language is not English, pupils with a visual impairment & pupils with Severe/Profound Multiple Learning Difficulties (SMLD & PMLD).

– professional reading collection for school staff.

• Artefacts – topics covered range from Chinese New Year to Victorian Household

Objects, and each box comes with laminated explanation notes.

• DVDs – cover a wide range of curriculum areas.

• CDs – music & popular spoken word titles.

• Art loan & photograph packs – themed in line with national curriculum study units.

Support & AdviceOur standard Service Agreement includes an element of SLS staff time. How you use this time is your choice, for example:

• Help & advice with all aspects of the school library:– Stock reviews and stock editing. – Cataloguing & classifying stock.– Library layout, design & furnishing.– Setting up computerised library management systems.

• Work with pupils:– Storytelling.– Book talks & reader development sessions.– Research & library skills.

• INSET



Service AgreementsAll school Service Agreements include:

• Continuous loan, exchange & updating of resources for the classroom, library or both.

• Termly delivery & collection service.

• Advice & support.*

• Up to 20 items (from Audio/Visual collections, artefact packs, art loan & photographs, professional reading) per teacher.

*Additional charges may apply to Non-Northumberland schools, Academies and Independent schools.
