Why were monasteries good places to raid?

Monasteries are easy to raid. The monks don’t fight

backThe Vikings steal the food

stores we keep for the poor.

And the monks have lots of treasure which people

have donated to them. We steal that too.

Because we build our monasteries in quiet, out of town places, there’s no-one

nearby to help us

Who was King Alfred the Great?

Alfred was born in 849.

By the age of 22 he had become the ruler of the West Saxons.

He raised an army to drive the Danes out of the South of England.

He then made an agreement with the Danes that they could live in a certain part of England.

This area was called the Danelaw.

He also made many improvements to the army and navy, and to education and laws.
