Featuring World Cinema, Documentaries, French, German, Spanish and Irish Language programming, a Story Pitching Competition and much, much more, the JGFF empowers young people with a passion for cinema.
Like our big sister, the Galway Film Fleadh, the Junior Film Fleadh is a festival for discovering new talent and we’re proud to present a platform for the Future Filmmakers of Ireland to showcase their work. For our 2017 edition we’re also focusing on the Science of Cinema with our exciting new lineup of Workshops and a very exciting screening of X-Men focusing on the Secrets of Superhero Science. Speaking of Superheroes, each edition of the festival is curated in consultation with a Youth Council, comprised of film fans of different ages, schools and backgrounds, ensuring that the many workshops and screenings that take place during the festival are relevant and of interest to the young cinephiles taking part. These young people, our audiences and our filmmakers represent the future of Irish filmmaking so please join us for four days that celebrate the Future of Film. 12AMy Life as a Courgette
Nine-year-old Icare, nicknamed Courgette, moves to a foster home, a place full of rejected kids fighting for survival among the rest of the bullies, loners and misfits. Using a Tim Burton stop-motion style to create big-eyed, fragile beings, the director achieves a very different but hugely affecting film of teen life. An Oscar-nominated animation, adapted from a YA novel by Girlhood director, Celine Sciamma.

Maik is a daydreamer who goes unnoticed by his classroom crush; Andrej is an oddball kid from Russia with an eccentric taste for Hawaiian shirts. The two form an unlikely bond when Andrej shows up at Maik’s door with a “borrowed” blue Lada, and the prospect of an impromptu road trip beckons. Based on the bestselling German novel Why We Took the Car by Wolfgang Herrndorf, Tschick is a funny, endearing, coming-of-age film with fresh verve of its own.

Since their parents split up, Sara and her younger sister live with their mother, whose new partner is a woman. Everyday life for the four of them is very similar to that of other families. The situation is actually totally fine with Sara. But not everyone sees it that way – her father in particular has his doubts. As Sara’s 13th birthday approaches, she feels rather overwhelmed: her first crush, her body is starting to change and to top it all off, conflicts over loyalty with her parents… Everything feels wrong. This empathetic film is based on a true story.

13+Condemned to Remember
Irish Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental celebrates his 80th birthday in a Dublin Mosque and embarks on an epic journey across a Europe in turmoil.
In Germany, Tomi concludes his long quest to bring the convicted SS war criminal Hilde Michnia to account for her secrets and lies.
In Poland and Slovakia, he confronts the ‘crisis of shame’ that prevents an honest reckoning with the scale of local ‘collusion’ with the Nazi extermination project.
In Bosnia, Tomi embraces Muslim survivors of a genocide, who still search for the bones of their loved ones.
Along the way he puts himself into the shoes of the “new Jews” and discovers a strong common bond with refugees fleeing the hell that is Syria.
A powerful, timely and vital documentary that follows Irish

Synopsis: Across the world, children are born with an extra twist to their chromosomes that allow them to exhibit superhuman abilities: fire a beam of force from their eyes, sprout wings that allow flight, or read people’s minds. These ‘children of the atom’ are often feared and despised by the world, forcing these mutants to resort to desperate actions. However, one group of mutants has banded together to show the world that it need not fear their kind. Apart, they are simply scientific curiosities, freaks and monsters - but together, united by their shared belief, they are more. They are the uncanny X-Men.

X-Men was a game changer. When it was released in 2000 superhero cinema was at an all time low. Both the Batman and Superman franchises had utterly collapsed after starting strongly and, with the exception of surprise hit Blade, Marvel’s superheroes had made little inroads into the world of film. At the turn of the millennium superheroes were more or less the preserve of Comic books and the occasional cartoon. Fast-forward to 2017 and comic book films, with their tales of science fiction heroism, dominate the box-office and assorted other media. Superheroes are everywhere today.
The success of X-Men made this possible. It also started scientist Barry Fitzgerald on a journey into the Science of Superheroics. Barry is a Research Scientist at Delft University of Technology, a Scientific Communicator and Author. Last year he published his popular science book Secrets of Superhero Science. In the book he discusses the real science and current scientific research that you need to know in order to create the superpowers of the superheroes. Iron Man suits, invisibility cloaks and web slingers are just some of the topics discussed. As well, of course, as the genetic superpowers of the X-Men.
So join us on Saturday November 11th for a screening of the film that started it all and an introduction/post-screening discussion with Barry Fitzgerald about the amazing science of superheroes and how the world of the X-Men is not as far away as we think.
Barry Fitzgerald Barry W. Fitzgerald was born in Limerick, Ireland on October 30th 1979, almost a year after the release of Superman. After graduating with a degree in Applied Physics from the University of Limerick (UL), he obtained a PhD in Computational Physics at UL. He currently works as a Research Scientist at the Process & Energy department at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. When he’s not watching superhero films or being a scientist, Barry trains for marathons and watches football at de Grolsch Veste, home of FC Twente Enschede. He has watched the 2016 film Captain America:Civil War more than 30 times and his superpower will always remain a closely kept secret.
