Six dangerous prescription drugs you should thinktwice before taking

Just because your doctor prescribes it does not necessarily mean it is safe for you to take. Many popular

prescription drugs, it turns out, come with the potential for serious side effects, including everything from

short-term nausea and headaches to chronic inflammatory myopathy and heart disease — or worse.

But this important information is often shrouded from public view, which intentionally perpetuates the myth that

the benefits of FDA-approved drugs far outweigh any risks. So to give you a more solid understanding of the

subject, here are six classes of prescription drugs you should definitely think twice about taking due to their

inherent dangers:

1) Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs ) Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs ) . Millions of Americans take PPIs to alleviate the symptoms of

gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition marked by food and acid in the stomach leaking back into

the esophagus and causing damage. But PPIs like Nexium (exomeprazole) and Prevacid (lansoprazole) have

been shown to both block nutrient absorption and inhibit the production of necessary stomach acid, which can

cause a host of other health problems. (http://well.blogs.nytimes.com)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued at least a dozen warnings about the dangers of PPIs,

which include an increased risk of bacterial diarrhea, magnesium deficiency, and bone fractures

(http://www.fda.gov). Long-term consumption of PPIs has also been linked to increased risk of pneumonia and

unhealthy weight gain.

2) StatinsStatins . The top-selling class of drugs for several years in a row, statins are hailed by the medical system as

a type of miracle cure for high cholesterol and heart disease. But popular statin drugs like Lipitor (atorvastatin

calcium) and Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium) have been shown to greatly increase users’ risk of diabetes, liver

disease, brain damage, muscle atrophy, and even early death. (http://www.drfranklipman.com)

The side effects of statins are so severe, in fact, that the FDA recently expanded its official warnings about

their use (http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm293330.htm). Beyond this, more than a

dozen studies have shown that taking statins for primary prevention does little, if anything, to prevent heart

attack or stroke, which means the drug class is medically useless for the millions of otherwise healthy people

who are prescribed it. (http://www.minnpost.com)

3) AntibioticsAntibiotics . The leading cause of antibiotic-resistant “superbugs,” antibiotics are another class of drugs that

can cause long-term health problems without providing much, if any, benefit. Insanely overprescribed for

conditions that often do not even respond to them, antibiotics and their long-term abuse by the medical system

has made many infections more virulent and untreatable.

According to Shane Ellison, M.S., from The People’s Chemist, the three most dangerous antibiotics currently

being prescribed are Levaquin (levofloxacin), Vancocin (vancomycin hydrochloride), and Bactrim (trimethoprim

and sulfamethoxazole). Ellison also lists quinolones, the most commonly prescribed class of antibiotics, as

dangerous as well, noting that antibiotics like Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Avelox (moxifloxacin HCL), and Floxin

(ofloxacin) can cause severe and permanent disability. (http://thepeopleschemist.com)

4) Antipsychotics Antipsychotics . One of the deadliest drug classes, antipsychotics are commonly prescribed for conditions

like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe major depression, as well as for many “off-label” conditions

such as mild mood disorder and everyday anxiety. But popular antipsychotic drugs like Seroquel (quetiapine

fumarate), Abilify (aripiprazole), Risperdal (risperidone), and Zyprexa (olanzapine) have been shown to increase

blood sugar levels, elevate lipid and cholesterol levels, and promote weight gain. (http://www.nytimes.com)

But even more concerning is the long-term neurological and brain damage that can result from taking

antipsychotics, not to mention the greatly elevated risk of metabolic syndrome, which can include major health

conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes

(http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/11/121127190016.htm). Antipsychotics are so dangerous that a

study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) declared them to be more deadly than terrorism.

5) Opioid pain relieversOpioid pain relievers . Pharmaceutical drugs have officially been declared a leading cause of death in

America today, and leading the way are opioid-based painkillers like Vicodin (hydrocodone bitartrate and

acetaminophen), OxyContin (oxycodone HCI), Percocet (oxycodone and acetaminophen), codeine, and

morphine.

According to a study out of Brandeis University in Massachusetts, prescription painkillers are now responsible

for causing more fatal overdoses than both heroin and cocaine combined. The U.S. Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention (CDC) has actually declared an epidemic in response to this elevated number of

prescription painkiller deaths. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

6) Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs ) Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs ) . Antidepressants like Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft

(sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine), and Lexapro (escitalopram) have been around for years, but their dangers

typically receive far less attention than they deserve. Side effects like suicidal tendencies, sexual dysfunction,

gastrointestinal bleeding, and heart disease are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the many side

effects of SSRIs.

In some cases, SSRIs can actually make depression symptoms worse, leading some individuals to become

violent. Be sure to watch the Health Ranger’s music video S.S.R.Lies for a creative glimpse at the dangers of

SSRIs: http://www.naturalnews.com

I have known several schizophrenics, one of whom used to take Zyprexa. I saw him when he was on this medication andwhen he neglected to take it, and the difference was like night and day. While taking it, he was much more focused and muchless prone to having hallucinations and babbling about nonsensical topics that made sense to no one but him. I think peoplehave the right to know the negative side effects of the medications they are taking. But, at the same time, I'm worried aboutwhat might happen if even one mentally ill person reads this article and decides to go off their meds because of it.Schizophenics in particular are prone to paranoia, and can be distrustful of medical professionals. You're obviously makingthe assumption that people who read this article are mentally competent to make their own decisions regarding the drugs theytake. But with the mentally ill, it's equally obvious that that isn't always the case. Also, saying that all these drugs are harmfulwithout providing less harmful alternatives is not particularly helpful, especially in the case of antipsychotics. If you know ofany alternatives to these drugs, I know a few people who would be very interested to have that knowledge. If no alternativesexist, then I see no way this article can be anything but harmful to the mentally ill.

There is an alternative: Cannabis. Other natural remedies are available for mental illnesses, and many of them arespiritually or shamanic based. When done correctly, the success rate is staggering. I have a theory aboutschizophrenics: they're perceiving things that we cant... its not necessarily that they're seeing or hearing things thataren't there. For all we know, these people are the only ones who get what a global prison we live in, and as aresult, are terrified and frightened for most of their lives, of something that most people can't perceive. I've heardstories of paranoid schizophrenics being labeled as such because they think the government is watching them. This is AFTER Edward Snowden released documents that support the fact the NSA was spying unconstitutionallyon innocent american citizens. In Russia during th... See More

Cannabis is not a cure all it can help with many things but it cannot on its own help a bipolar person or schizhrenic. It'samazing for pain but people need to understand. That in people who's brains are still developing even up to 21 it can causebrain damage. I work in a forensics lab and have been really studying up on this. More research needs to be done n I'm notsaying it can't help with something's but there is nothing out there that is a cure all!!

I have used some of these medications listed. I have had adverse reactions from them. I am a naturalist and found that gettingrid of those medications helped me. I feel that diet plays a key role in our health and health conditions. Certain foods, herbs and spices are just as or better effective on health than pharmaceuticals. Keep up the good work on keeping people informed asI also do. Thank you.

Yeah it's all fun and games until someone commits suicide/murder/etc. because you natural "nutbags" insist theystop taking their medications. ACTUAL SCIENCE has proven that the benefits outweigh the risks. Natural News isnot a valid source. Check your facts people and don't listen to "BigAlternativeMedicine". They have FAR more of anagenda than the alleged (but completely made up) "BigPharma".

Mindy Hatcher , Nutbags? hmm it is only a "nutbag" who would comment like this. Take your medicine. where doesit say on my post that it insists to quit your medications. I said it helped me. Considering where you work, you willprotect your job or whatever. Are you going to Join Monsano? I have been on medications all my life for one thingor another. Really, They are over prescribed. Now, Leave this "NutBag" alone. What I did for me, Made me a lothealthier and better than ever in my life.

Mindy Hatcher one more thing. You are just a kid. This is not for everyone and we know some people need to taketheir meds. I have a friend who is schizophrenic. I would never tell her to get off her meds. So don't think that usnaturalists are trying to get rid of everything.

Melissa ParhamI think the sentence "Just because your doctor prescribes it does not necessarily mean it is safe for you to take" is a dangerousstatement to make and could possibly lead people that are already paranoid and prone to mistrusting their healthcareprofessionals to stop taking their medications without first consulting their providers. While I believe you most likely had goodintentions in writing this article, when it comes to advising on medications such as SSRIs and antipsychotics one should havethe creditionials of a M.D. or N.D. or at least be a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or possibly a Psychologist. It seems to me thatyou have made yourself succesiptible to huge liability for those that read your article and stop taking their medications withoutconsulting their healthcare providers. Primum non nocere. (First, do no harm.)

Drs do not know from medications. They don't even warn you of side effects. They don't even know that Cipro andLevaquin are in the same class of drugs. You need to do your own research and not rely on your dr. sorry sad buttrue.

WellnessWith Michele I have read "up" on it before, and in all tests it works just as well as a placebo. Personally Iwould rather not waste my money on things that do not work, and do not think people should be tricked intobelieving something works when it does not. Holistic "medicine" hurts people when they put off treatment, or refuseto give their children vaccines.

Thank you for including the dreaded quinolone antibiotics. Please also note that the topicals such as ear and eye drops arejust as dangerous. Children are being given these ear drops and I am sure they are doing much harm to them althoughnobody is connecting the dots. I have been sick for the last 17 years due to being given Quinolones in the 90's and then againin so.ution form in March of 2013 during a surgery. I have been quite ill since that surgery due to the "oversight" of my surgeonat Duke U. We have some wonderful Facebook pages for people who have had any adverse drug reactions to theQuinolones.

There are so many natural things you can take for your blood pressure, exercise, and diet changes too...and theside effects from the meds can be worse for your health then the illness they are treating.

Robin Compton-Padgett of course they should get counseling too. ! I never meant to imply anyone should just getmedication. However that should not change the point I made. Depression very often leads to suicide . The netresult is less suicide when antidepressants are part of the treatment plan.

I was put on Paxil (an SSRI mentioned in #6) for anxiety when I was in college. 3 weeks in, the day I noticed it was "working"and I was feeling "better", I noticed I was grinding my teeth throughout the day and couldn't stop. By the evening my face andshoulders and toes were uncontrollably twitching as well. By night time it was my entire body and even my breathing wasaffected. I had to take short breaths in and then out to not hyperventilate. My doctor took me off them immediately, diagnosedme with myoclonus caused by the Paxil, and prescribed antiseizure medication. Within 2 days it was gone, but it was thescariest thing to happen to me. I thought I was never going to be able to control my body again. These drugs are dangerous!

I am a nurse and deal a lot with patients that have repetitive urinary tract infections. While speaking with Hospicenurse, that deals with this issue a lot, she told me that vitamin C 3-4 500mg tablets a day prevents UTI's due to itmakes so your bladder is too acidic for the bacteria to grow.
