MODULE: CROATIAN AS A SECOND AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE

University study program

This is an independent module intended for foreign students which leads to a diploma

addendum (additional certificate) will be issued.

Academic/vocational degree is earned as a part of undergraduate and graduate studies. Upon

completion of a two-semester module students will receive an additional certificate – a

diploma addendum.

The reasons for starting the module were motivated by the newly-emerged needs (increasing

international cooperation and a booming number of foreign students at the University of

Zagreb who are eager to learn Croatian language and study Croatian culture) as well as by the

tradition at Croaticum – Center for learning Croatian Language as a Second and Foreign

Language.

The users :

Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language is aimed at foreign students attending

undergraduate and graduate courses which offer exchange/mobility programs at the

University of Zagreb (for them the module is free),

as well as at lifelong education students (for them the module is not free).

Purpouse:

During the process of learning Croatian and getting to know Croatian society and culture,

students of Croaticum module will acquire important competences in their respective fields,

such as translating to and from Croatian, teaching Croatian abroad, teaching foreign

languages to native Croatian students in language centers, working in tourist agencies, foreign

companies' branch offices, diplomacy, institutions of the EU etc.

Enrolment requirements and admission procedure:

The enrollment conditions are a high-school diploma and the entrance exam which tests the

level of proficiency in Croatian language. Those students who are not proficient in Croatian

language cannon take the entrance exam.

Duration of the study programme and ECTS credits:

Module: Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language is taught throughout one academic year

(2 semesters). Upon completion of the Module, students receive an additional certificate.

Minimal number of ECTS credits necessary to complete the module is 60 ECTS credits.

Students who complete only a part of the Module (e.g. students who complete only one

semester, or students who complete only language exercises without completing the optional

courses), receive a certificate which lists the courses completed by the student, the earned

grades and the corresponding number of ECTS credits.

Croatian Ethnological Culture

1. week Croatian emigrants and Diaspora

The course will present push and pull factors of migration mobilities of Croats in the

European and World context: Croatian diaspora (old diaspora: Croats in Gradišće, Molise

Croats, Croats in Rumania, Croats in Slovakia; emigration to overseas countries /

transcontinental migrations to the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, Africa / migrations to

Western Europe) as well as internal Croatian migrations. At the Seminar a film on a Croatian

diaspora community will be shown.

2. week Croats in the context of contemporary migration mobilities

By means of a presentation of contemporary migrations from the Croatian territory and

immigration to Croatia, students will acquire knowledge of cultural processes and

deterritorialized cultures. By means of presenting the consequences of migrational mobility

and the model of immigrant integration as an important aspect of globalization, the course

intends to discuss the issue of ethnical and cultural diversity in the contemporary Croatian

society. Due to the fact that a large number of students that attend Module: Croatian as a

Second and foreign Language belong to the descendants of Croatian diasporal communities

and/or plans to continue living in Croatia, at the Seminar students will deliver presentation on

their personal migrant experiences.

3. week Traditional forms of family life

First term will present different forms of family life in Croatia and it will cover topics

belonging to the realm of traditional life in relation with family relations, gatherings and

working periods. Students will gain a detailed insight into traditional (village) way of life in

Croatia, with basic notions and terms related with family relations and ethnological research

into family and kinship. With reference to time frame, the course will be dealing with the

period from late 19th century to the second half of the 20th century. Thematically speaking, a

closer focus will be on several prominent segments: agrarian family cooperatives (zadrugas),

intergenerational relations, ritual gatherings and work cooperatives.

4. week Modern family life

This course will provide students with insights into modern family life in Croatia. Due to the

fact that ethnology and cultural anthropology study family relations as a sociocultural

category, emphasis will be put on, for example, family values, family rituals and gatherings

and hierarchal structure inside a family, as well as in relation to other social relationships

(neighborhood, friendship, non-consanguineous kinship). These notions will be dealt with

factually and critically, based on the results of a recent international scientific project about

family and social security.

5. week Croatian traditional attire

An overview of traditional attire on the territory of Croatia with reference to division accross

ethnographic zones and their specific elements. The topic will cover basic types of costumes,

cuts and decorations, as well as jewelry, footwear and headpieces. If possible, the lecture and

the Seminar will be held at the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb.

6. week Croatian traditional attire

The lecture will analyze various factors that have been influencing the aspect of costumes

with a special emphasis on varieties of clothing items that represent particular identities

(local, regional, national). At the same time, special attention will be paid to those varieties

that were designed in the time of the Renaissance, the Baroque, in the 19th and early 20th

centuries. As a part of the Seminar, students will present the application and use of traditional

Croatian communities in diaspora, on the basis of their personal experiences.

7.week Rural space, construction and housing in Croatia

The lecture brings forth an outline of traditional construction and housing in Croatia. Thereby,

special attention will be paid to the information related with basic types of settlements, living,

economic and public buildings and spaces, spaces dedicated to gatherings and socialization of

citizens, as well as the information related with types of economy and attitude towards the

environment. The lecture will cover the characteristics of this region and local buildings, ways

of their equipment and usage as well as the related (everyday) activities and events. The

mentioned data will be viewed upon through the scope of geographical, political and socio-

economical context of particular regions.

The lecture will discuss the changes that have been affecting rural space in Croatia throughout

the 20th century, and which have influenced the usage and the preservation of traditional

construction, village housings and rural space in general. On the basis of various examples,

the lecture will analyze contemporary practices of usage and preservation of the mentioned

artifacts, e.g. the practice of connecting with the tourist branch or the ecological ways of

construction and life.

9. week Annual customs cycle

The emphasis will be put on the most important Croatian customs throughout the calendar

year (Christmas customs, Halloween, Easter customs, St. George’s Day customs, Pentecostal

customs, and Midsummer’s Day customs). During the Seminar, films related with the topic of

the lecture will be shown.

10. week Customs life cycle

The lecture will discuss birth customs, premarital life of young people and preparations for

marriage, wedding rituals and posthumous customs, as well as the beliefs that are related with

each segment of the mentioned customs. During the Seminar part of the lecture, films related

with the topic will be shown.

11. week Traditional medicine in Croatia

The lecture will present an overview of traditional Croatian medicine in the past and the

present, with a special emphasis on healing books as repositories of traditional ways of

healing and health preservation. By means of exotic and awkward recipes, the lecture will

discuss their modern interpretation and analyze their historic, social and cultural context.

Seminar: Materia Medicae – a definition of a particular explanatory model in relation with

health and sickness.

12. Traditional music and dance

The lecture gives an overview of traditional music and dance. The selected examples will be

exemplified by video-recordings. The students will observe and analyze the roles that

traditional music and dances can play, i.e. they will analyze the way in which they were used

in the processes of forming and portraying identity in a tourist presentation, in a political

context etc.

13. week Festivals and festivalization

The lecture gives an insight into contemporary varieties of festivals in Croatia. Through

selected examples of festivals, the lecture intends to reveal the roles which they can play in

the modern Croatian society, with an emphasis on their role in identification processes as well

as in the tourist context. Selected examples will be shown and analyzed by means of video-

14. week  The creation of contemporary customary practices   

Students will be informed about recent ethnological and cultural-anthropological approaches

which define the creation of tradition as a process of selection of motives from the past which

are in turn used for contemporary social needs. This process is exemplified through the

creation of contemporary ludic customary practices in Bol on the island of Brač. At the

Seminar, students will analyze familiar examples of affirmation and the creation of customs,

and they will be able to connect the mentioned examples with the customs from their

countries of origin.

15. week Non-material heritage phenomena on UNESCO representative lists

At the last lecture and seminar, students will be presented with audio- and video-materials

which will portray certain non-material heritage phenomena that have been included on

UNESCO representative list. This will ultimately serve as the basis for an evaluation of

understanding of the entire course.
