What is Aptitude ?• Van Dusen defined “aptitude as a measure of the probable
rate of learning which results in interests and satisfaction
and is relatively specific and narrow”.
• According to Bingham “aptitude is a condition or set of
characteristics regarded as symptomatic of an individual’s
ability to acquire with training some usually specified
knowledge, skill or set of responses such as the ability to
speak a language, to produce music, etc”.

Characteristics of aptitude
• It is symptomatic or indicative of one’s ability for a particular work or job.
• It connotes more than potential ability in performance.• It is a present condition but with a forward reference.• Aptitude is the result of the interaction of heredity and
environment – An individual is born with certain potentialities and begins to learn immediately.
• Aptitude embraces any characteristic which predisposes to learning; including intelligence, personality, interest and special skills.
• Aptitude is simply a capacity to learn.

What does aptitude tests measure?
Aptitude tests measure different traits and abilities, and they are designed to identify
specific strengths in different areas. Testing of aptitudes is needed to achieve the
following purposes.
• Help in the proper choice of courses and careers.
• Predict future success – Researches have shown that differences in potential abilities
are relatively Stable. They tend to persist.
• Help the students in the development of social traits – The aptitude testing can help
both the teachers and the counselors to know the profile patterns which distinguish the
future science student from the future arts student, the future engineer from the future
doctor.
• Supplement other psychological tests.

What is Interest?
• According to Guilford, “Interest is a generalized behavior
tendency of an individual to be attracted to a certain class of
incentives or activities that are vocational in nature and to those
whose broad meanings transcend vocations”.
• According to Murphy “Interests are conditioned objects,
characteristics or people in the environment”.
• Interest, in short, is a behavior orientation towards certain
objects, activities or experience. It is an expression of our likes
and dislikes or our attractions and aversions.

What are the characteristics of Interest?
• They are shaped by both heredity and environment.
• They are fairly stable traits of personality.
• Never become permanently fixed.
• Are sufficiently unique to warrant special consideration in the
study of an individual or a group.
• Vary with age and differ among individuals.
• Gradually crystallize as the individual begins to discover himself
and piles up rewarding experiences in a few fields.

Purpose of Interest Testing• To provide teachers and counselors with information regarding the student’s preference
and aversions which will help them acquire better understanding of students and their
problems.
• To help the students to indentify and clarify their interests in terms of the demands of
varied courses and careers and choose work and experiences consistent with their
interests.
• To enable teachers, counselors and parents to know the kinds and intensity of the
students interests and assist them to prepare their educational and vocational plans
consistent with their interests.
• To help channelize the energies of the youth in different directions.
To help in the selection of the right person for the right work and thus save frustration,
unhappiness and disappointment in the lives of individuals and increase productive
capacity of individuals.

Scheduling of Spider Test
First Step :-
The test is more Applicable for IX Grade Student.
The total time taken to complete the ‘Spider Test’
will be
5 hrs. The test can be conducted in five days or five
weeks depending upon the class room environment.
All the students will be made to know that there is no
right or wrong answer in the Spider Test.

Second Step :-
On the test day the student are seated comfortably and the test
booklet and the answer sheet will be given. The students will be
asked to fill in the personal information. They are given
instructions which are to be followed very strictly. After
completion of the test, scoring will be done according to the
scoring key. From the obtained raw score, the corresponding
percentile will be found out from the percentile norms. The
students scores will be calculated and tabulated.

Third Step :-
Two tables are prepared. Table I shows the scores of the subject and Table
II shows the scores of the Group.
Fourth Step :-
The tabulated scores are discussed individually and as a group.
Fifth Step :-
The individuals highest and the lowest aptitude level are identified. The
preferred occupational environments of the subjects are known.
Every student in the class are given a detailed report, based on the report
they can choose their career path and move to the tertiary level with
Greater Confidence and Happiness.

Sixth Step:
Interest test will be done after the completion of
Aptitude test.
Seventh Step:
A consolidated report of both the test will be
prepared and tabulated.

The enclosed graph clearly indicates that V.Prabu has very high in Clerical ability and Psycho motor ability.
V.Prabu has extremely high ability to work with rapid speed and accuracy in tasks which do not require
“higher level” of intellectual activity. They can be successful in tasks involving record-keeping, filing, dispatching,
coding, and other similar jobs.
The Psycho motor ability is also extremely high which will enable you to perform accurately under
speeded conditions. Has excellent fine muscle dexterity for manual tasks. They can be successful in assembly line
work, drafting, and clerical jobs.
Findings:
V.Prabu has highest Aptitude in Clerical ability and Psycho motor ability.
