CDS International

● CDS International is a non-profit organization committed to the advancement of international practical training opportunities for young professionals, students, educators, as well as labor, business and government representatives.

● Founded in 1968 as the Carl Duisberg Society, a subsidiary of the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft. Now an independent, American organization, our name represents the international nature of our programs. We associate the letters CDS with culture, diversity, success.

● CDS annually serves over 2,700 individuals from more than 80 countries in a variety of work/study, internship, fellowship, and study tour programs.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program

● Program Objective: Enables 20 young American professionals with graduate-level training to acquire an in-depth understanding of the political, economic and cultural environment of Europe

● Program Description: 9-month professional fellowship with two high level work placements and three seminars taking place throughout Europe

● Eligible Candidates: ages 23-34; graduate degree and 2+ years experience in the fields of Business Administration, Economics, Journalism/Mass Communication, Law, and Public Policy

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young

Professionals ● Program Objective: Reciprocal exchange enables 75

American students and recent graduates to gain an understanding of daily life, education, and professional training in Germany through a full-year work/study program

● Program Description: 2 months of intensive German language training (no prior German required; all levels accepted); one semester of classroom instruction at a university or professional school in Germany in participant’s field; a 5-month internship in participant’s career field

● Over 1,300 American young professional participants since the program’s inception in 1983

● Eligible Candidates: ages 18-24; US citizens and permanent residents in a wide range of fields with clear career goals and some relevant work experience; designed for business, technical, vocational, and agricultural fields, though all fields encouraged to apply

● Funding: US Congress through the US Department of State and German Bundestag through the Bundestagsverwaltung

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Course of the

Program Year ● December 1, 2008: application deadline for the 2009-2010

● February 2009: select participants interviewed at 15 locations throughout US

● March 2009: final selection of 75 participants

● July 2009: pre-departure seminar in Washington DC

● August-September 2009: Language training in Cologne, Saarbrücken, and Radolfzell

● October 2009 - January 2010: classroom training at university or vocational school

● February - May 2010: internship in participant’s career field

● May 2010: evaluation seminar in Berlin at the Bundestag

The Émigré Memorial German Internship Program (EMGIP)

● Program Goal: enables recent American & Canadian undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in working within U.S. or Canadian regional government to gain in-depth knowledge of the German State Parliaments

● Program Description: 1- to 3-month fellowship at a German State Parliament. Application dates vary.

● Eligible Candidates: fields of International Relations, Public Administration, Political Studies, Law, or European Studies with an emphasis on Germany, European or German Studies. Must have advanced German language skills

● Funding: The CDS International Scholarship Fund

WISP - Work Immersion Study Program

● Program Goal: Provides community college students with the opportunity to spend three months in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg to improve German language abilities and gain practical work experience at German companies.

● Program Description: 3-month work/study immersion program including a one-month language course at the Carl Duisberg Centrum in Radolfzell, followed by a two-month internship in the participant’s career field

● Program Funding: The Baden-Württemberg STIPENDIUM

Internship Placement Programs in Germany

Internship Program in Germany (IP)

● Places qualified students and recent graduates in professional internships for 3 to 12 months in a variety of fields such as business, engineering, hotel management, and technical fields

● Language course stipends are available

Summer Internship Program in Germany (SIP)

● 3-month internship during summer months for American or Canadian students who would like to gain work experience abroad in a variety of fields, including business, marketing, media, nonprofits, and the sciences

● Language course stipends are available

● Internships are both paid and unpaid

Transatlantic Renewable Energy Exchange (TREE)

● Program Description: 3-month program that places students from U.S. colleges and universities in a paid internship in Germany focusing on renewable energy

● Program includes: Week-long introductory seminar on the topic of renewable energy in Germany and the EU at the University of Kassel

● Eligible Candidates: Participants in this program must be enrolled students at a U.S. college or university before, during and after the program. U.S. citizens graduating in May 2008 are also eligible. Participants must be able to function in a German-speaking work environment. Internships are available in a variety of professional fields, including, but not limited to business, marketing/ PR, production/manufacturing, IT, engineering, chemistry, physics, material sciences, environmental economics and policy. All applicants should have some prior academic and work/internship experience in their desired field.

● Application Deadline: February 29, 2008

● Program Timeline: late May through August 2008

SCHOTT Summer Internship Program

● Program Goal: enables participants to work with the SCHOTT AG company in Mainz, Germany

● Program Description: 3-month internship program that places qualified candidates in paid internships with SCHOTT Glas AG in Mainz. Program includes housing, health insurance, compensation for internship, and seminars.

● Eligible Candidates: enrolled U.S. citizens in the fields of engineering, marketing, business, manufacturing, material sciences, etc. Students must have completed at least their junior year of study, and have studied for the equivalent of one year of post-secondary level German.

● Funding: SCHOTT Glas AG and the CDS International Scholarship Fund

Student Services International (SSI)

● Program Goal: enables recent American college graduates to intern in the student services organizations at German universities

● Program Description: 9-month scholarship program that places qualified candidates with a career interest in international education. Program includes a monthly stipend, housing, health insurance, three seminars, and seminar-related travel costs. Annual deadline is in June

● Eligible Candidates: fields of education, social policy, and/or student affairs. Must have advanced German language skills

● Funding: The Robert Bosch Foundation,Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW), and CDS International

CustomizedStudy Tours

● Program Goal: enables students to experience a specific area, industry, or subject in a tailor-made program

● Program Description: CDS International works with college administrators and faculty to design short-term study tours for a small group of students (15-25) in fields ranging from business to engineering to liberal arts

● Eligible Candidates: decided by college and CDS

● Program Funding: Cost of study tour depends on activities involved, services offered, and the size of the group. Tours can be funded by college or students directly

International● Alfa Fellowship Program: high-level professional development exchange program placing

10 qualified American citizens per year in work assignments at leading Russian organizations in the fields of business, economics, journalism, law, public policy, and government. Key goals of the Alfa Fellowship Program are expanding networks of American and Russian professionals, developing greater intercultural understanding, and advancing US/Russian relations

● Internship Program in Argentina (IP-A): 3-month program that provides U.S. students and graduates proficient in Spanish with internship placements in business, finance, tourism, IT, and engineering fields (optional language training component available)

● Summer Internship Program in Spain (SIP-SP): 3-month program that provides U.S. & Canadian students proficient in Spanish with summer internships in business/finance, tourism, IT, and engineering fields

● integrationXchange: exchange program for 15 US-based immigration practitioners from the NYC area and 15 German-based practitioners, primarily from Hamburg, funded by the US Dept. of State and the Koerber Stiftung in Hamburg. Participants in this exchange examine a wide range of topics relating to immigration through one-week workshops in New York and Hamburg. Workshops on both sides of the Atlantic include combined group sessions, site visits to local organizations, and visits to participants' organizations

● USA-BELGIUM CulturalCrossing: exchange program allowing immigration practitioners in the US and Belgium to exchange ideas on immigrant integration via group sessions, site visits to local organizations, and visits to participants’ workplaces, funded by the US Department of State and the King Baudouin Foundation, Brussels

CDS International Scholarship Fund

● Supports 30-50 young Americans interning in Germany, Argentina, and Spain on CDS programs each year

● Awards modest living stipends as well as grants for one-month language courses and transatlantic flights

● Scholarships awarded on the basis of demonstrated need

● Currently totals over $800,000

● Over 40 scholarships awarded in 2007
