The monitor incorporates a high technology detector that measures UV radiation fromthe sun. This radiation is known to be harmful to the skin and eyes. The monitorhelps you to limit your exposure to these harmful UV rays.

Section I of this User’s Guide provides an overview of the SunUV Personal UV Monitorand provides important background information on solar UV and how to protectagainst overexposure. Section II describes how to measure solar UV with the monitorand how to use it for different types ofoutdoor activities. Section III tells youhow to set the time/month/day/dateand alarm functions.

THE SUN’S ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION

PRODUCT OVERVIEWThe SunUV Personal UV Monitor is a miniaturized instrument that will help to increaseyour awareness of the sun’s UV radiation, which is harmful to your health in excessiveamounts. The monitor measures the "UV Index," an internationally standardizednumerical value of the intensity of UV radiation. It also estimates the time required toreach the maximum amount of UV to which you should be exposed in a single day.This estimate is based on broadly accepted medical research on how much solar UVis necessary to start sunburn, and on government guidelines for rating how suscepti-ble your skin is to sunburn. When you reach the estimated maximum time, the moni-tor sounds an alarm.

Depending on the model, the monitor can be clipped to a belt, backpack, stroller, orother item you carry or have with you, or worn on your wrist like a watch. Any modelcan be placed nearby when you are out in the sun. The monitor can measure the UVintensity continuously, or be used to make periodic measurements. When you go intothe sun with the monitor and then indoors or into shade, it will remember your total UVexposure up to the point when you went out of the sun. If you return to sun exposure inthe same day, the monitor will resume estimating your total time including the previousexposure. Or the monitor can be reset, so that two or more individuals can use it onthe same day.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE SUN’S UVRADIATION AND ITS EFFECTS ON HUMANS

There are several important aspects to understanding the nature of ultraviolet radiation, how it is measured, and how it affects people. This section presents only a very brief summary of these factors. You are encouraged to further research thistopic to enhance your use of the product.

HOW SOLAR UV AFFECTS USThe sun gives out a broad spectrum of radiation, including light that you can see andinvisible rays, such as ultraviolet radiation–called "UV radiation" or just "UV" for short.UV radiation can penetrate and change the structure of skin cells. According to theUS Center for Disease Control, UV exposure appears to be the most important environ-mental factor in the development of skin cancer. The National Cancer Institute hasplaced UV on its list of known carcinogens. UV rays have been found to be associatedwith various forms of eye damage, such as cataracts, and can damage the immunesystem. Overexposure to the sun is also closely linked to the skin aging process. Sunlight provides a specific benefit, too, by inducing the production of vitamin D, whichis important to the immune system. Most of us recognize that spending time in the sunis an enjoyable experience for many and it is completely unrealistic to ask people to avoid it. It is therefore important for us to be aware that too much sun exposure is a riskand how to protect ourselves against overexposure.

FACTORS CAUSING VARIATIONS IN YOUR EXPOSURE TO UV RADIATION

Here are some of the variables that influence the amount of UV radiation that youwill be exposed to in a given location, at a given time of day and season:

Thirty percent of the total UV radiation reaching the earth occursbetween 11AM and 1PM, when the sun is the highest.

UV radiation levels peak in late spring and early summer, whenthe longest periods of daylight occur. During winter, UV peaklevels may be 50% to 80% lower than peak summer levels in thecontinental USA, with larger reductions observed elsewhere inthe world.

Clouds can substantially reduce UV radiation, but do not neces-sarily completely block it. Heat, humidity and wind can alsointensify the UV radiation effect.

The UV intensity increases by 4% compounded per 1000 feetabove sea level. At 10,000 feet, there is almost 50% more expo-sure than at sea level. Skiers should be particularly aware ofthis, since this increase is further amplified by the reflection ofUV from snow.

Ozone is a molecule that is found in the upper atmosphere andblocks UV. In some parts of the world, the atmospheric ozonehas been reduced, allowing more UV to reach the surface.

White sand reflects as much as 20 to 50% of incident UV radia-tion and snow up to 90%. Snow skiers and others spending time outdoors in snowy areas need to be very aware of UV exposure,even if the level of directly radiated UV is low. As noted above,higher altitudes, where many ski areas are located, also receivehigher levels of UV. Water absorbs significant UV – it is possibleto get sunburned under water. Users of the SunUV Monitorshould be aware of reflected UV radiation when spending time outdoors where reflection can occur, since this may not be completely measured by the monitor.

UV radiation is absorbed and re-radiated by the atmosphere. In open spaces, such as a beach, re-radiation is more significantthan in areas with trees and building, which will partially blockre-radiation. It is possible to receive a sunburn from re-radiatedUV while avoiding direct sunlight.

INDIVIDUALS HAVE DIFFERENT SENSITIVITIES TO UV RADIATION

Several factors influence how each of us reacts to UV radiation:

Most of us realize that light-skinned people will experience sun-burn more quickly than those with darker skins. The United StatesCenters for Disease Control (CDC), Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA), Academy of Dermatologists, Environment Canadaand other agencies have established standardized Skin Typeguidelines to determine an individual’s susceptibility to sunburn.The guideline used for the SunUV Monitor is described in the nextsection of this guide, which tells you how to make UV measure-ments. You select a number using a reference table that repre-sents your skin type and store this in the monitor’s memory. Thenumber is used as part of a calculation for "Suggested MaximumExposure" time when you are in the sun. If you have any ques-tions about your skin type, consult with a physician.

Extra precaution should be taken when taking any medicationor drugs, some of which can cause skin to react as much as two skin types lighter than it would normally. Drugs thatincrease sensitivity include anti-infectives, such as trimethoprim,and anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen. Be sure to read the warning labels and consult with a pharmacist or physicianto understand if increased sun sensitivity is a side effect of medications you are using.

Infants and children require special protection. Our skinchanges as we age, normally becoming lighter. This generallystarts to occur around 45 years of age.

A significant multi-day exposure to sunlight (for example all daySaturday and Sunday) increases the sensitivity of skin to UVdamage on the second day of exposure. If you use the sameSPF sunscreen on both days, it will not be as effective on thesecond day.

Sunscreens are assigned a "Sun Protection Factor" (SPF) num-ber representing their effectiveness in limiting UV rays. Highernumbers indicate more protection. Common SPF ratings are 4,6, 8, 15, 20, 23, 25, 30, 40, 45, 48, 50. No chemical sunscreenblocks 100% of all incident UV radiation. SPF 40 absorbs 97.5%of incident UVB radiation if used properly. (UVB is the part ofUV radiation that causes the most skin damage.) The SPF num-ber of a sunscreen multiplies the estimated maximum exposuretime in the sun with no sunscreen. For example, if the estimatedtime in the sun before sunburn starts for your skin type is 15minutes without sunscreen, it would be 60 minutes with SPF 4 (4 x 15 minutes) and 300 minutes with SPF 20 (20 x 15 minutes).

IMPORTANT NOTE: The UV intensity changes through theday, steadily increasing before noon if cloud conditions areconstant. The increasing UV reduces the time before sunburnstarts. It is not correct to assume that if you have 10 minutesof exposure time without sunscreen based on the UV intensityat 9AM, you will have 300 minutes with sunscreen of SPF 30.This is because the intensity at 10AM will be higher than at9AM, and at 11AM it will be higher yet. This reduces the 300minute estimate. Use the SunUV Monitor to measure the UVand continuously calculate an exposure time estimate. Also,calculations of exposure time before sunburn starts are esti-mates. Your skin may vary from average, or you may beexposed to more UV than the monitor is reading. Be alert toskin reddening and discomfort.

During setup of the SunUV Monitor, you store the SPF of the sunscreen you will be using in its memory (between 1 and 50: 1 represents no sunscreen). When you go into the sun, the monitor uses the SPF number along with the skin factor you also entered to calculate the Suggested Maximum Exposuretime estimate. The stored SPF value can be changed at anytime if you change to a different sunscreen.

Here are some things to be aware of when using sunscreens and lip balms. Read thesunscreen manufacturer’s instructions for additional guidance.

• SPF number: Many experts recommend a minimum of 15. You can use yourSunUV Monitor to tell you how much time in the sun various SPF sunscreens will give for your skin type and the UV intensity. See Section II.

• Apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before going into the sun. Re-apply sun-screen 1 to 2 hours after going into the sun. Health Canada recommends reapplication after 20 minutes.

• Consider resistance to water and perspiration when selecting a sunscreen.

• Consider active ingredients when selecting a sunscreen.

• Lip balms should be applied liberally at least every hour.

• Zinc oxide based products should be considered for ears and nose.

Sunscreen is not recommended for infants less than 1 month old.

Users should be aware that some researchers are concerned about the safety of frequent sunscreen use and high SPF sunscreens, and others believe that the benefits outweigh the risks in view of the known hazards of UV overexposure. You are encouraged to research this topic further and consult with a physician.

CLOTHING, HATS AND SUNGLASSESClothing can be used to block UV radiation but it should not be assumed that allclothing blocks it completely. Clothing can be rated using an "ultraviolet protec-tion factor," UPF, similar to the SPF for a sunscreen. A cotton/polyester t-shirt has a UPF of 15, which means that on a day with a UV Index of 10 it is possible for avery sensitive individual to get sunburned through such a t-shirt in one-and-a-halfhours. Other fabrics offer better sunblocking capability, and there are severalmanufacturers of highly UV-resistant clothing that has been tested to have a UPFhigher than 50.

Hats are important because they protect areas of the head and neck that canexperience sustained sun exposure. Broad brimmed hats with a minimum 3" brimall around offer the best protection. Baseball style caps do not adequately protectthe ears or neck, and mesh styles do not block UV from the scalp.

Sunglasses protect the eyes from both UV-A and UV-B, two specific types of UVradiation that can be absorbed by the eye and may induce disease. UV blockingcapability is not indicated by price, color or darkness. Look for labels that specif-ically state the type and amount of UV radiation blocked.

STAYING OUT OF THE SUNThe most difficult UV radiation protection technique to use for many people isstaying out of the sun. Complete or substantial avoidance of the sun is impossi-ble, highly impractical or highly undesirable for many of us. The SunUV Monitorwas designed for the many people who cannot avoid the sun or do not choose todo so. However, you can be aware of times, places and conditions that createhigher UV risk, as discussed earlier, and you may be able to selectively avoid sunexposure in those situations. For example, a peak UV Index of 10 or higher isconsidered very high, and without sunscreen a fair-skinned person may burn inless than 10 minutes. (The UV Index is explained in the next section.) Staying outof the sun is the best way to avoid risk on days with high UV intensity. Parents orothers responsible for a child’s exposure should be particularly aware of high UVradiation situations.

Follow the instructions in this sectionfor making UV measurements. Thissection also describes how to use themonitor in various outdoors activities.

The next two sections show pictures ofonly one of the SunUV Monitor models.The button positions and measure-ments are the same for all models, sothese steps apply to whichever modelyou have.

FIRST, "Wake Up" your monitor. Toconserve the battery, watches areshipped in "sleep" mode. Push any button on the monitor for 1 second to start normal operation.

Some information is always or almost always displayed:

The UV Index your monitor has most recently measured is always displayed in the lower left, under the words "UV Index." (The UV Index is discussed onthe next page.)

The time of day is always in the lower right portion of the display, except whenviewing the alarm setting.

Some information is displayed only when you select it.

Pressing and releasing the MODE button will sequentially display seven typesof information in the upper box next to the sun symbol. These are listed belowand explained (except day/date) later in this section:

UV INTENSITY – THE UV INDEX

The SunUV Monitor measures a number called the UV Index. The UV Index is a standardized scale that indicates the intensity of the UV radiation affecting humanskin that reaches the surface of the Earth. The intensity varies from one location toanother, and through the course of the day in any specific location. This is causedby the sun’s changing position in the sky, clouds, altitude, season and other factors— each location has its own range of index values from dawn to sundown. The UVIndex is used in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many othercountries by agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency andEnvironment Canada.

The higher the UV Index, the more care you should take when working, playing orexercising outdoors. For most places on Earth the value is between 1 and 15, butsome high altitude places such as the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii havemeasured a UV Index of 20. The UV Index can make a large difference in theamount of time you can spend in the sun before sunburn. For example, if you arevery fair skinned and are not using sunscreen, you have approximately 15 to 30 minutes of sun exposure on average before the onset of sunburn on a low UV Indexday (1 to 2), but only 2 to 3 minutes on a day with a UV Index of 10. The UV Indexstated in newspapers and broadcast media weather reports in the USA is a forecastfor the noontime reading, usually the maximum value for the day, from the NationalWeather Service. It is not an actual measurement, although the forecasts arechecked for accuracy. The SunUV Personal UV Monitor provides a continuous real-time readout of the UV Index.

MEASURING UV INDEX WITH THE MONITOR

To make a measurement of the UV Indexwith the SunUV Monitor, point the detectorat the sun.

• In the plastic models, the detector isbehind the black square window at thetop of the face.

• In the metal models, the detector is inthe small round hole above the center ofthe face.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Adjust the angleof the detector to maximize the reading.

The UV Index the monitor has most recent-ly measured is always shown in the lowerleft corner of the display. This value is displayed as a whole number. (Example -3 shown in lower left hand box)

The UV mode allows you to display a more precise UV reading in the upper righthand window. Press and release the MODE button until UV is displayed. The upperright window will display the UV reading to one decimal place. (Example – 3.0 shownin upper right hand box)

SUGGESTED MAXIMUM EXPOSURE TIME

The Suggested Maximum Exposure (SE) feature of the SunUV Monitor estimates thetime remaining until you reach the maximum UV dose prior to the start of sunburn.The estimate is based on government guidelines for skin type and medical researchon UV dose needed to cause sunburn. When the maximum exposure time is reached,the alarm will sound automatically.

There are two methods to obtain Suggested Maximum Exposure time – continuous UVmonitoring, and UV hold monitoring. Both methods measure the UV Index and soundthe beeping alarm when the maximum time is reached. The method you should selectdepends on your activities and how the monitor is being worn or carried. In some sit-uations, weather conditions will also be a factor in selecting one of the two methods.

The suggested exposure estimate depends on your settings for Skin Factor (SF), SunProtection Factor (SPF), and the UV Index measured by your monitor, which indicatesthe strength of UV rays reaching you. Before reading Suggested Maximum Exposuretime, you must enter your Skin Factor and the SPF of your sunscreen into the monitor. The next part of this section describes how to do this.

Use this chart to choose a Skin Factor value, a number from 4 to 16. Choose a catego-ry from the "Skin Categories" column for your skin’s general characteristics based onyour experience, unexposed skin color, and tanning history. Then select a numberfrom the associated range based on your judgment - are you average, more sensitiveor less sensitive within that category? The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) setsthe monitor to the SPF value of yoursunscreen. The SPF value should be printed clearly on the front of the sunscreen container. It is a measureof how much protection the sunscreenprovides, with higher numbers mean-ing more protection.

• Press and release the MODE button

until the Sun Protection Factor

(SPF) is displayed.

• Press the SET button. An SPF number will begin flashing.

• Press the START or HOLD button tomatch the SPF value of sunscreenlotion you are using. The Start (+)button will increase the value andthe Hold (-) button will reduce it.

READING SUGGESTED MAXIMUM EXPOSURE WITH CONTINUOUS UV MONITORING

After entering SPF and SF, you can use either of the two methods for reading sug-gested maximum exposure. When you use continuous UV monitoring, the monitorcontinuously measures the sun’s UV radiation. It stores your accumulated exposure,and constantly updates the estimate of maximum exposure time, which it showswhen "SE" is displayed. If circumstances allow, this technique should be used in preference to the UV Hold method, discussed in the next part of this section.

To use continuous UV monitoring, you must positionthe monitor so that it is pointed at the sun and canmake the continuous readings accurately. This canbe done with the clip-on models or wrist modelremoved from the wrist. It is important that the useris exposed to the same sunlight as the monitor. Ifyou go into the shade, bring the monitor with you if not wearing it.

• After making a UV Index reading, press the MODE button to go to SuggestedMaximum Exposure mode (SE).Your suggested exposure time willbe displayed.

• When the Suggested Exposuretime limit is reached, the alarmwill sound automatically.

• Press any button to turn the alarm off.

• If the UV Index is zero and there is no risk of overexposure, the exposure time will be displayed as 19:59 (19 hours, 59 minutes).

• At midnight, the monitor automati-cally resets itself, and the exposuretime estimate starts over for thenext 24-hour period.

• Continuous monitoring is active after you have entered your SF and SPF

parameters and pressed the SET button to store them. The exception to this is if you are using UV Hold monitoring (see next part of this section.)

• It is not necessary to be in the SE display mode for continuous monitoringto be active.The alarm will sound when the suggested exposure time has elapsedregardless of the display mode you are viewing. If you place the monitor in the SEdisplay mode, you can watch the suggested exposure time update as your UV exposure accumulates and the UV Index changes.

• Don’t forget – the display automatically reverts to day/date after 4.5 minutes,but the suggested maximum exposure time function is still active, and the alarm willsound when it has expired. To return to SE mode, press the mode button.

WHEN TO USE CONTINUOUS UV MONITORINGContinuous UV monitoring is appropriate for activities such as gardening, boating, tennis or fishing from a dock or boat. It can be used where there is an opportunity toplace the monitor in a position to be in the sun continuously and where the user stays in the vicinity of the monitor and receives the same sun exposure.

This is also the best method to use on a partly cloudy day, since the clouds will intermittently reduce the UV radiation, lengthening the time you can stay in the sun.

UV Hold monitoring allows you to “lock in” a fixed UV Index reading so that yourmonitor continues to estimate a suggested maximum exposure time even when it isnot constantly measuring UV radiation. When your suggested exposure time limit is reached, the alarm will sound, just as it does with continuous monitoring.

WHEN TO USE UV HOLD MONITORINGThis method is not as accurate as the continu-ous monitoring method, but is more practicalfor some situations. For example, if you arewalking or jogging, your body motion willprobably prevent you from continuously ori-enting the monitor towards the sun to obtainan accurate UV Index reading. Using UVHold, you can make a measurement beforeyou start to exercise and read the estimate of suggested maximum exposure time.

It is strongly recommended that you re-meas-ure the UV Index at least every 60 minuteswhen using UV Hold -- more frequently if possible. This is because the UV Indexchanges throughout the course of the day,and updating the index reading improves the accuracy of the suggested exposure time estimate.

Also, this mode works best if the sun exposure is relatively constant, i.e., a constantlysunny day, or an overcast day. A partly cloudy day with the sun alternately appearingand disappearing behind clouds will cause the UV level to change frequently, reduc-ing the accuracy of the time estimate when using UV Hold. If you want to use UV Holdon days when the sun intensity is changing frequently from passing clouds, the read-ing you store should be done in full sun. If you update the UV Hold reading frequentlyenough, the suggested maximum exposure estimate will err on the side of reducedexposure in these conditions.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT READING SUGGESTED MAXIMUM EXPOSURE TIME

• The Suggested Maximum Exposure time is an estimate. Many factors canaffect the accuracy of the estimate, such as proper monitoring of the sun, if yourskin response to UV is typical, and reflected UV, which may cause the measuredUV intensity to be low. Some of these factors may cause the SuggestedMaximum Exposure indicated by the monitor to be too long. If you are unsureabout your skin type or sunscreen effectiveness, or in a situation in which themonitor may not be detecting all of the UV to which you are exposed, such as on a white beach with reflected sun, you should consider reducing your expo-sure time to less than indicated on the SE display. Use common sense and thesuggestions and information in this User’s Guide to help protect yourself fromharmful overexposure to UV.

• It is always advisable to take precautions against overexposure to solar UV byusing sunscreen, protective clothing and a hat, regardless of the length of timeon the SE display.

• When the alarm sounds indicating the suggested exposure time has expired,you should prevent any further exposure to UV for the remainder of the day.Adding more sunscreen does not completely prevent further UV exposure.Covering up with UV-blocking clothing and a hat, or going into deep shade orindoors are the best ways to avoid further UV exposure.

Accumulated UV (AUV) indicates thetotal amount of UV exposure you havereceived since the day started, or sincethe AUV was previously cleared. AUVis measured in scientific units. For mostusers, this number is not meaningfulby itself. It is only meaningful whenused by the monitor to calculate esti-mated maximum exposure.

You can clear AUV manually if morethan one person wants to use the moni-tor in the same 24-hour period. Forexample, you can use it in the morning,and another person can use it in theafternoon after AUV has been cleared.

To help verify that the SunUV Monitor is operating properly, you can refer to the tableon the next page, also printed on the wallet card provided with the monitor. Thistable provides a suggested exposure time for a various UV Indices and Skin Factors,assuming that the user is not wearing sunblock. Cross reference your skin factor tothe UV Index you measure – does the suggested exposure time on the chart approxi-mately match the SE time on your monitor? HOW DO I KNOW THAT I AM CORRECTLY MONITORING THE SUN’S UV?

To determine if you are correctly monitoring the sun’s UV, you must compare yourmonitor’s measurement to another measurement or estimate of the UV Index in yourlocation. The most reasonable way for most user’s to accomplish this is to comparetheir readings to government predictions of the UV Index for their locale. The NationalWeather Service projects the daily UV Index peak in a number of USA locations, andthese can be obtained from newspapers, the Internet (www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/prod-ucts/stratosphere/uv_index/uv_current.html), or your local television weather forecast.These forecasts are for the peak UV Index of the day, around noon, so compare yourmonitor’s reading made at that time. When comparing your measurements to thepublished prediction, remember that clouds, altitude, reflected UV and other factorsmight cause local variations in the UV Index.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY SUNSCREEN’S SPF IS HIGH ENOUGH FOR MY PLANNED ACTIVITY?

If you plan to spend time in the sun wearing sunscreen, you can use the monitor toestimate in advance if your sunscreen’s SPF is sufficient for the entire period that youwill be out, and the SPF you will need if yours is not high enough.

Follow these steps:

1) Enter your Skin Type and the SPF number of the sunscreen you plan to use.

2) Make a measurement of the UV Index as described in Section II.

3) Read the Suggested Exposure time. Is it the same length as the time you plan tobe out in the sun? You should build in some safety margin in case you extend yourtime and to account for variables, such as the UV intensity increasing if you will beout before noon.

4) If the SE time is too short, enter a higher SPF and read the SE time again. Youshould be able to find a SPF that extends your exposure time to cover many activities.

Wait for the minute display on the reference clock to read 00 seconds, and then, pressthe SET button. Seconds will be set to zero, and your monitor will begin displayingthe exact time.

You can set the alarm to sound at a time you choose. This will not interfere with thealarm sounding when your suggested maximum exposure time has elapsed.

• Press and release the MODE button until Alarm mode (AL) is displayed.

• Press SET. The hour for the alarm setting will be displayed where the hour for time ofday is usually displayed, and it will flash. The Start (+) button will advance the hourwhile the Hold (-) button will set it back.

Insure that the AM or PM indication is correct when you set the alarm hour.

• After setting the hour, press MODE to set the first minutes digit. The Start (+) button

will advance it while the Hold (-) button will set it back. Press MODE again, andrepeat this step for the second minutes digit.

• Press SET to exit the alarm-setting mode.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Setting the alarm will not interfere with the alarm sound-ing when the Suggested Maximum Exposure time has expired. However, it isimportant not to confuse the alarm that you set with the exposure time alarm.

After you have set the time for the alarm to sound,you can activate it. You can also de-activate analarm you previously set.

• Press the MODE button to go to alarm display

mode (AL). At the far right hand side of thebox with AL, you will see either 0 or 1. The 0indicates that the alarm is not activated, the 1indicates it is activated.

• Press and release the SET button. Then press

the MODE button until the 0 or 1 blinks.

• If the alarm is off and blinking 0 is displayed,

pressing START activates the alarm andchanges the 0 to 1. The alarm symbol willappear above the display of seconds. If the

alarm is activated and you wish to deactivate it, pressing START changes theblinking 1 to 0, and the alarm symbol will disappear.

• Press SET to store your activation or de-activation, and MODE to return to anotherdisplay mode if you wish.

• When the alarm sounds, pressing either of the two right buttons will shut it off.

*Note: The SunUV Monitor is rated as water resistant to 30M. The monitor is capable of withstanding splashes, rain, and brief immer-sions. It is not recommended that the user deliberately immerse the monitor, and it should not be used for extended swimming periods,snorkeling, diving, or similar activities.
