Barriers & CSFs

Barriers to Implementing the EHR• Overall size of the rollout• Scheduling and coordination of rollout activities• Cost effective change management• Resolution of privacy and security concerns• Time for vendors to connect EMRs to the EHR

Critical Success Factors• Engaging stakeholders (Health Authorities, POSP, vendors, etc.)• Flexibility of the implementation plan• Effective scheduling and prioritization of sites• User adoption of applications• Long-term usability of the message specifications

Front-end Integration

Sample Front-end Integration Flow• EMR locates patient of interest• Option: EMR pre-loads data to EMR• EMR presents patient data (e.g. drug history)• Launch a browser with PHN as a parameter to either:

• EHR summary screen for the patient• PIN prescription screen for the patient• Lab viewer screen for the patient

• Perform action with the EHR application• Task-switch (alt-tab) back to the EMR• Option: EMR to back-fill info through S2S interface• EMR locates next patient
