Embarrassed by your family... a combination of long term conflict, proximity, sibling rivalry, and the natural authority struggles that are part of developing identity.

In many ways you are

Hostages to your family...

they control where you live, what you watch, who you can be friends with, what clothes you get to wear, whether you get to have pierced ears or long hair, or get frosted tips.

BUT

Hebrews 12:5-6 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as children? It says,

       "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,        and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,    6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves,        and he chastens everyone he accepts as his child."

Hebrews 12:7-9 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—

and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate children at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had parents who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!

Our parents disciplined us for a little while

I am not talking tonight about abusive families. I could. I know some of you deal with really hard things. Secret things that have happened in your family.

If you ever want help, or want to talk about those things, then we would really like to help you get that help. You can talk to us about it any time.

These abusive situations are found when the normal family structure breaks down because one or more of the adults fails to act in a way consistent with the minimum requirement for parenting.... food, shelter, basic clothing, medical care, affection, boundaries, safety ...Abuse is not about what I want... ...it is about what everyone needs...
