may halt if circumstances require. After challenging,he places himself in the mos.t advantageous positionfrom which to pass or arrest the person or party. Inselecting this position, the sentinel may require thechallenged person or one of a party to advance towardhim, or to remain halted, or to advance to a particularplace, or to face toward the light, or to take whateverposition necessary in order that he may most surelyand promptly determine whether the person or partyshould be passed or turned over to the guard.

    (b) I f the person or party challenged is mountedor in a vehicle, the sentinel will proceed as when theperson or party challenged is on foot. I f necessary tothe proper performance of his duty, he may cause oneor all of a party to dismount.

Thus, if the answer is "Patrol(friends, etc.)," the sentinel will say, "Advance one tobe recognized," and when recognized he will say, "Advance patrol (friends, etc.)."

    (f) I f a person approaches alone. he will bt! di-rected to advance to be recognized and when recognized will be advanced as indicated above for one ofa party. Thus, if the answer is, "Friend (officer of theday, etc.)," the sentinel will call ; "Advance, friend

(officer of the day, etc.), to be recognil;ed." Afterrecognition, the sentinel will say, "Advance, friend(officer of the day, etc.) ."(2) (a) I f two or more persons or parties ap-proach the sentinel's post from different directions atthe same time, they will be challenged in turn andrequired to halt and remain halted until advanced .(b) The senior is first advanced in accordance withthe foregoing rules.(c) I f a person or party is already advanced and in

conversation with a sentinel, the latter will challengeany other person or party that may approach. I f theperson or party challenged is senior to the one alreadyon his post, the sentinel will advance the new personor others that may be challenged; otherwise the sen-tinel will advance no one until the senior leaves him.He will.then advance only the senior of the remainingones, and so on.

    (d) The following order of rank governs a sen-tinel in advancing different persons or parties ap-proaching his post: Commanding officer, officer of theday, officer of the guard, officers, patrols, relief, non-commissioned officers of the guard in order of rank, and friends.

    (3) A sentinel 'must never allow himself to be sur-prised, nor permit two parties to advance upon him atthe same time .

( 4) Answers to a sentinel's challenge intended toconfuse or mislead him are prohibited. but the use ofsuch an 'answer as "Friend" is not to be understoodas misleading, but as the usual answer made by officersor patrols when the purpose of their visit makes itdesirable that their official capacity should not beannounced .

    (5) The commanding officer may limit challengingto suspicl'ous looking persons.
