From the Pastor, October 4th, 2020

Before becoming a

seminarian, I had a

pretty good

understanding of the

Catechism and

thought that, though I

would certainly learn

much during my time

in philosophy and

theology, I wouldn’t

encounter anything

that would

fundamentally change the way I perceived truth

and reality—I didn’t expect to encounter

anything that would change my worldview. I was

mistaken.

In my second year at Bishop White seminary, I

realized that I had a completely erroneous

understanding of human freedom. I thought, as

many do, that free-will was, fundamentally, the

ability to choose between good and evil, right

and wrong. This understanding of freedom,

however, is incorrect and foreign to a Christian

worldview.

I discovered this when I got into a debate with Fr.

Kevin Oiland, whom many of you will remember

from his early years serving in Walla Walla. Fr.

Oiland and I had been discussing the

consequences of Christ having two natures—

100% human and 100% divine. In the midst of

our conversation the question arose: was Jesus

able to sin? The question is not, did he sin (which

we agreed, he did not), but was he capable of

sinning.

Fr. Oiland argued that Christ was incapable of

sinning. God is incapable of sinning, because sin

is absolutely foreign to the divine nature. Asking

God to sin would be like asking a dog to do

calculus or a human to pass through physical

objects like angels. It is not that dogs don’t

choose to do calculus or we don’t choose to walk

through walls, but that we can’t; it is foreign to

our nature. Likewise, sin is foreign to the divine

nature. Fr. Oiland reasoned that, since Jesus is

God and God cannot sin, Jesus cannot sin.

I, on the other hand, argued that Jesus was also

fully human. What makes human’s unique

among all visible creatures is the fact that we

were made in the image and likeness of God, that

we are free. Freedom, therefore, is an intrinsic,

essential part of human nature. It seemed to me

that if it was impossible for Jesus to sin, if he was

incapable of sin, then he wasn’t truly free and,

therefore, would not be fully human.

Fr. Oiland and I spent days arguing different

aspects of this basic dilemma. I, wanting to win,

began rallying support amongst the other

seminarians and had roughly two thirds agreeing

with me. The other third of the seminarians

supported Fr. Oiland’s position or were non-

committal.

I was feeling pretty good about my position, but

wanted to really drive home the victory, so I

reached out for more firepower. I decided to get

some input from someone who had actually

studied theology (after all, I was only a second

year college seminarian). I decided to approach

Fr. Tracy, who was well known for his incisive

intellect. If he sided with me, that would put the

argument to rest and leave the victory firmly in

my hands.

I will continue with his response and the

conclusion of the argument next week.

Praise be Jesus Christ! Now and Forever!

In Christ,

Fr. Nicks

The “moral pollution” of our “throw away” culture:

Ven. Fulton J. Sheen “Could it be that we live in the Peril of Over-kill? When life first came to earth, Cain used the first Over-Kill to attain it with his brother’s blood. Abel was disposable life. When Divine Life came to the world, He, too, was treated as disposable life. The sacredness of life has nothing whatever to do with when life begins; it depends on who produced it. The time element has little to do with the value of life, otherwise, there could be fixed an age-limit for living. Life is sacred! We must also be careful if we give to mothers the right to destroy a child because it may have ‘defective traits,’ that someday a child may claim the right to destroy the mother because she has the ‘defective trait’ of poverty or senility.”

Mission Statement: The Tri-Parish Catholic Social Concerns Ministry is made up of parishioners from St. Patrick, St. Francis and Assumption parishes, who strive, in the light of Gospel values, to raise awareness of and address social concerns in our community and society through word and deed. For more information regarding this column please contact Sue Logsdon at [email protected]

LEARN: The third type of justice is legal. “Legal justice is the flip side of distributive justice. Just as distributive justice concerns the obligations of the government to its citizens, legal justice relates to citizens' obligations toward the larger society. Legal justice requires that citizens obey the laws of society. Legal justice may also require that a citizen serve the government.” Catholic Social Teaching by Michael Pennock pg.38

REFLECT: Do I obey and respect the laws of my local, state and national governments, such as: paying taxes, obeying traffic laws, serving on juries, voting? What is my attitude toward obeying laws- is it resentful or respectful?

CIVILIZE IT – DIGNITY BEYOUND THE DEBATE “We undermine our commitment to human dignity when we fail to see the dignity of those who have a different viewpoint. We must detach from the bitterness that surrounds us and seek a better path...Civil dialogue can best be defined as the ability to enter meaningful conversation with people whose viewpoints may be different with our own, who have a different background or experiences, or who come to a different conclusion about the best way to promote the common good.” USCCB 2019

US CATHOLIC BISHOPS STATE in the Introduction of Forming Consciences For Faithful Citizenship: 5.“This statement highlights the role of the Church in the formation of conscience and the corresponding responsibility of each Catholic to hear, receive, and act upon the Church's teaching in the lifelong task of forming his or her own conscience. Foremost amongst those teachings are the four basic principles of Catholic social doctrine: the dignity of the the human person, the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, no. 160) . With this foundation, Catholics are better able to evaluate policy positions, party platforms, and candidates' promises and actions in light of the Gospel and the moral and social teaching of the Church in order to help build a better world. 7. In this statement, we bishops do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Our purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God's truth. We recognize that the responsibility to make choices in political life rests with each individual in light of a properly formed conscience, and that participation goes well beyond casting a vote in a particular election.” ACTIONS: register to vote if you haven't already research the platforms of parties and candidates to see if they reflect Church teaching on all moral issues respond in a civil manner to anyone not agreeing with your viewpoint- ask WHY he or she believes that way Don't forget to donate to those in need: give to Catholic Charities for hurricane and fire victims give to local shelters and food banks for local relief support if possible our local busniesses with your patronage pray for victims of the Covid 19 virus as well as all of those impacted by the pandemic pray for all students, their families and educators as they struggle with the challenges of the new school year.

LECTURA—Hermanos:

Filipenses 4: 6-9

Antes de llegar a ser

seminarista, tenia

muy buen

entendimiento del

Catecismo y pensé

que, aunque

ciertamente

aprenderia mucho

más durante mi

tiempo en filosofia y

teologia, no

encontraria nada que

fundamentalmente

No

El Padre Oiland y yo pasamos dias discutiendo

diferentes aspectos de este dilema básico. Yo,

Alabado sea Jesucristo!

Ahora y por siempre!

En Cristo,

Padre Nicks
