!f Before the war, the Axis nations extended their territoriesby seizing nearby countries. Japan went into China, Italyinto Albania, and Germany into Austria. Other nationsjoined forces as the Allies and tried to stop them.
!! Early in the war, the Axis powers defeated every countrythey attacked. By 1940 only the United Kingdom was leftto oppose Germany in Western Europe.
t! In 1941 Germany attacked the Soviet Union, and Japanattacked the United States, causing these two powerfulnations to join the Allies.
il By the time the Allies had defeated the Axis, Japan andmuch of Europe were in ruins.
