PURAFIL ® www.purafil.com THE BIOLOGICAL AIR TREATER APPLICATION STUDY FOR FIRST IN CLEAN AIR PURAFIL’S BIOLOGICAL AIR TREATER PROVIDES SUPERIOR ODOR REMOVAL FOR MUNICIPAL APPLICATIONS THE PROBLEM In this application study scenario, we will select a wastewater treatment plant application with an airflow of 5,000 cfm (8,500m 3 /hour) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) concentration of 100 ppm average and 150 ppm peak. This example is typical of an application with high airflow and high concentration of H 2 S; the unpleasant odor of H 2 S is noticeable even in concentrations as low as 0.025 ppm. The low maintenance required by the BAT makes it the best alternative for applications with higher gas concentration such as the one selected above. In this particular case, using a dry media scrubber would not be the most economical solution, because of the need to replace the media on a regular basis. An even more inconvenient alternative for these types of applications is the usage of a wet chemical scrubber; a wet scrubber would have a lower capital cost compared to the BAT scrubber, but would require a significant amount of chemicals to operate. Caustic wet scrubbers also require much more maintenance and because they use harsh chemicals, they are also subject to very strict guidelines. Overall, using a wet scrubber in this specific example would be even more expensive than a BAT scrubber. Please refer to Purafil’s comparison sheet of biological versus wet scrubbers for further information. PURAFIL PROVIDES THE SOLUTION The mixed media of foam cubes and spacers inside the BAT allows for a standard equipment to accomplish more than 99% removal of hydrogen sulfide gas. The polyurethane foam cubes provide incredible surface area per unit volume to host even more microbial biofilms. Polypropylene spacers supply substantial void space and structural integrity for tall beds, as well as enhanced mass transfer and excellent hydraulic dispersion and distribution. The unique mixed-media support also grants control of surface area, biofilm depth and pressure drop. Ratios of foam-to-plastic vary based on a scientifically engineered formula, which is customized for each application. This patented feature is only available with the Purafil BAT system. Purafil provides the design assistance to the customer to select the appropriate equipment based on the customer’s requirements. system would be designed with aneight foot (2.44 m) diameterfiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP)vessel, BAT mixed media, 20 HPmotor and FRP blower (sized todeliver 5,000 cfm), a recirculationpump and a nutrient pump.

The BAT system operates on electricalpower and water supply. The water sourcecan be either potable or re-use water from the wastewatertreatment plant with at least 60 psi and the capability ofproviding a minimum of 50 gallons per minute of water. In atypical wastewater treatment plant application, usingsecondary treated effluent as a water source isrecommended; not only is it economical, but this type ofwater often carries nutrients needed by the bacteria in thebiotrickling filter.

In order to design the appropriate biotrickling odor removalsystem, the following information is required:

1) Airflow

2) Gas concentrations (average and peak conditions)

3) Required removal efficiency (normally 99% for H2Sand 90% for total odor)

4) Temperature of the airstream (this will normally beambient but variations must be known)

5) Availability and quality of the water (including flowand pressure if possible)

6) Odor Source ( e.g. headworks, pump station, sludgestorage, etc)

Purafil’s dry-scrubbing media is either bulk-filled within our engineered equipmentor inside our MediaPAK™ modules or PuraGRID® filters which are then inserted intothe equipment. We offer a variety of patented dry-scrubbing granular mediaformulations to eliminate odorous, toxic, and corrosive gases. Our media permanentlyremoves gases from the air through chemisorption. During this instantaneous process, gases are adsorbed, absorbed and captured throughout the entire volume of themedia. The gases are then chemically transformed into harmless solids that remaintrapped inside the media. Once the gases are removed from your environment, theycannot re-enter the airstream.

As a complimentary service, we help you optimize your system’s performance bytesting remaining media life. Our laboratory technicians analyze samples from yoursystem(s) and provide a report indicating the necessary media replacement datebased on specific conditions in your facility.

Purafil also provides a patented biological mixed media which uses a natural bio-trickling microbial process to remove odorous gases. Please see our biological sectionfor more information on this advanced bio filtration technology.

Purafil’s engineered dry-media scrubbers offer several advantages compared to cometitive products. Our patentedmedia formulations are manufactured using special chemicals, or impregnants, that react with odorous gases andremove them from the airstream. Known as chemisorption, this process converts odors to harmless salts. Once thegases are removed from the environment, they cannot re-enter the airstream. As a result, Purafil’s engineeredmedia do not typically require special disposal precautions.

Purafil’s engineered media perform well at all temperatures and levels of humidity, they are non-flammable, ULClassified and remove a broad range of odors. Our media are also life testable. Through laboratory analysis, Purafilcan predict when media must be replaced which can help to prevent gas breakthrough and premature mediadisposal. Purafil offers a large selection of engineered media scrubbers to control odors in various municipal settings.

BIOLOGICAL AIR TREATER MIXED-MEDIAThe patented technologies within Purafil’s Biological Air Treater provides a more efficient and cost-effective odor abatementand VOC treatment than other biological removal systems. The innovative BAT media consists of proprietary blends of speciallyformulated polyurethane foam cubes and polypropylene spacers that are uniquely supported for the immobilized bio-catalysts,resulting in higher concentration and distribution of biofilm compared to conventional and alternative biotrickling filter systems.

HONEYWELL’S PROPRIETARY MIXED-MEDIA PACKAGINGThe polyurethane foam cubes provide incredible surface area per unit volume to host microbial biofilms. Polypropylenespacers supply substantial void volume and structural integrity for tall beds, as well as enhanced mass transfer and excellenthydraulic dispersion and distribution. The unique mixed-media support allows for control of surface area and void space, with the result of reduced pressure drops across the deign bed. Ratios of foam-to-plastic vary with engineering design andapplication, and are used to control biofilm depth and pressure drop. BAT mixed-media beds can be used in biofilters toproduce highly-efficient bulk removal, intermediate removal, and polishing zones. Purafil’s BAT biofilter & biotrickling filtertechnology is amenable for any biofiltration application.

The polishing filtration in this high-tech system is Purafil’s proprietary Odormix™ SP dry media which has been specially engineeredto provide the highest amount of permanganate (the active ingredient) for increased capacity and will not off-gas like carbonproducts. Odormix™ SP Media demonstrates a higher working capacity for broad-spectrum oxidation of contaminants inactual field conditions, where multiple gas challenges are present.

PURAFIL’S BIOLOGICAL SCRUBBER VS.COMPETITORS’ WET CHEMICAL SCRUBBERThe technology transfer and license of Honeywell’s patented biological odor controltechnology has provided additional capabilities to Purafil’s line of clean air productsolutions. The Biological Air Treater (BAT) can be used for high airflow and concentrationlevels of hydrogen sulfide. The other typical competitive technology for thisapplication are wet chemical scrubbers. When comparing these two technologies with an airflowof 10,500 cfm (17,850 m3/hr) and a hydrogen sulfide concentrationof 143 ppm (200mg/m3) with standard temperature and pressure, the Purafil Biological Air Treater (BAT) is approximately $3.8 million less than acompetitive wet chemical scrubber over a 20 year time period.

Facilities storing hazardous quantities of chlorine (Cl2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) or ammonia (NH3) must invest in emergency standbyequipment to prevent accidental chemical releases.

Purafil’s dry-chemical Emergency Gas Scrubber (EGS) is designed to remove the entire contentsof a fully loaded Cl2/SO2/NH3 cylinder in a worst-case release scenario. The EGS works withcylinders storing 150 pounds, 1 ton, 2 tons or 3 tons or more of Cl2/SO2/NH3 and dischargesless than 25 parts per billion.

Purafil manufactures two designs of the EGS:

1. Aluminum, multi-stage scrubber with horizontal airflow

2. Fiberglass vessel with vertical airflow

Dry scrubbers have several advantages over conventional wet scrubbers. For instance, dry scrubbers require significantlyless maintenance than wet scrubbers. They have just one moving part—a blower. No need to hassle with pumps, spraynozzles, or pH controls!

Dry scrubbers are much safer, too. Instead of using toxic liquid caustic, they neutralize gases with non-toxic dry-scrubbingpellets. These pellets are called media, and they permanently transform gases into harmless solids.

Unlike liquid caustic, dry-scrubbing media are immediately available for instantaneous reaction, regardless of the loadrate. With wet scrubbers, you have to measure the amount of gas fed into the scrubber.

Purafil’s dry emergency gas scrubber discharges less than 25 parts per billion, but wet scrubbers discharge 1-4 parts permillion. Call Purafil to help you transform your caustic wet scrubber to a safe dry scrubber with our patented retrofit plan!
