Dr. Clarence C. and Maxine Davis Cottrill Endowed Lecture Presents:

Practicing Sleep Medicine as a Dentist: What the Dentist and Team Need to KnowDr. Bailey is a general dentist with a practice limited to the management of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (Snoring and Sleep Apnea) utilizing oral appliances as well as Temporomandibular Disorders, Orofacial Pain and related headaches. He is a graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry and completed a General Practice Residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He is a past president of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (1998-1999), is the founder and past-chair of the Oral Appliance Section and served on the Stan-dards of Practice Committee for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He frequently lectures both in the US and internationally and has authored numerous articles and chapters on the topic of Sleep Medicine and on the use of Oral Appliances by the dentist for the management of snoring and sleep apnea.

Dr. Bailey is currently the Past-President (2013-2014) of the Colorado Sleep Society and was the chair for the Sleep Medicine Committee for the American Academy of Orofacial Pain from 2012 to April of 2016. He has Diplomate status in the American Board of Orofacial Pain and in the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONThe dental team is becoming more involved in the recognition and management of patients with a sleep disorder, especially a sleep breathing disorder (snoring and sleep apnea). It is important for the dental team to understand the role they may have as part of the overall health care team. The first step is recognition that a patient may be at risk for a sleep disorder and this is best accomplished with screening: from the history to the review of the medical history to the use of standard questionnaires. This can be done by anyone in the dental office. The role of the dental team in the management of a sleep breathing disorder most often involves the use of an oral appliance. Recognizing the wide variety of oral appliances that are available and how to derive the most optimum outcome leads to the highest level of patient care.

TARGET AUDIENCEThis course is recommended for the entire dental team.
