COURSE DESCRIPTION/TARGET AUDIENCEThis course, recommended for the entire dental team, will provide lecture information concerning patient history gathering. Emphasis will be placed on the association of the 40 most prescribed medications, over-the-counter drugs (OTCs) and herbal products with major disease cate-gories that may influence dental treatment. An in-depth review of adverse drug events (ADEs), drug interactions, cost effectiveness and drug efficacy is stressed. Systemic drug therapies and medications used in the management of infection and pain will be presented. Current protocols for antibiotic prophylaxis and the therapeutic treatment of common oral mucosal lesions will also be discussed. COURSE OBJECTIVESFollowing this course, participants should be able to:• Describe the protocol for obtaining a complete drug history

of a dental patient.• Know the 40 most commonly prescribed medications in the

United States including indications for administration, class or mechanism of action and ADEs.

• Understand the importance of categorizing medications generically.

• Relate the administration of commonly prescribed medica-tions to systemic diseases requiring their use.

• Appreciate the significance of interactions among common prescription, over-the-counter (OTC), herbal medications and certain foods that may alter or influence dental treatment.

• Know the commonly prescribed OTC, non-narcotic and combination analgesic drugs used to control preoperative and postoperative dental pain.

• Know the current American Heart Association (AHA) guide-lines for antibiotic prophylaxis coverage.

• Know the therapeutic treatments indicated for common oral mucosal lesions.

Dr. Herschaft received a BA degree from Queens College - City University of New York, a DDS from West Virginia University (WVU) School of Dentistry, a certificate in oral and maxillofacial pathology from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New Orleans. He is Professor Emeritus - MUSC College of Dental Medicine, Professor of Biomedical Sciences - University of Nevada - Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine, and Guest Professor - Nankai University Medical School in Tianjin, China. Dr. Herschaft is a forensic dentist with the Clark County, Nevada Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner. He has been vice-president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS)

Edward E. Herschaft, DDSand president of the American Society of Forensic Odontology. Dr. Herschaft was designated a Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the WVU School of Dentistry Alumni Association in 1998 and has been recognized by several national organizations and state agencies for his forensic dental services. A Diplomate of the American Boards of Oral Medicine and Forensic Odontology and Fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists, AAFS and Pierre Fauchard Academy; he has published and presented extensively in the United States and abroad regarding oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral medicine, and forensic dentistry.
