Box 2921 Lubbock, TX 79408 January 2014 2013 saw some changes to the WTRC board layout, thanks to some creative thinking by board President, Ron Lubowicz. At the end of 2012 he proposed the reorganizing of a few directors’ positions to be more generic so those folks could be available to assist the board in a variety of roles rather than just one particular area. The idea was to best use the talents and skills of those willing to serve in those positions where normally their focus would be very narrow. The result has been a good one. Other changes this past year saw the addition of the USAT&F West Texas Association Championship events that run concurrent to WTRC races—the Run for the Arts 15k, the Hot Dam 5-miler, and the Buffalo Wallow Half Marathon. A handful of our mem- bers participated and you can see the results at usatfwestexas.com under Past Events for 15k, 5M, and Half Marathon. In addition, WTRC took advantage of the RRCA annual conference being held close by in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and sent two board members to represent our club. They were able to take advantage of all the conference had to offer and has proven to be very beneficial thus far. We look forward to another year of more adventures in the business of running an or- ganization based on the passion of running, community outreach, and scholarship. 2013 WTRC Toys for Tots Cross Country Race

The final race of the 2013 West Texas Running Club season took place on Saturday, December 14, 2013. After experiencing excellent race conditions in 2012, this year proved to be less desirable with temperatures in the low 30’s at race time and considerable wind. Despite this, we had 33 kids aged 4 to 12 brave the

elements in the one-mile fun run and 111 finishers in the 4-mile race.

In the kids one-mile fun run, Emily Bachicha (age 7) crossed the line first overall in 6:54 and Justin Smith was the first overall boy (age 11) in 7:03. As always, it was great to see these kids run and then smile (mostly) as they crossed the finish line – proud of their accomplishment. For the 4-mile cross-country race, John

Corelis crossed the line first in 25:47 and Michaela Jansen was the overall female winner in 31:19. No age group records were set this year.

Perhaps most importantly, we had many people bring unwrapped gifts to help out the Marines’ Toys for Tots campaign, which wil l bring many more smiles this

Holiday Season…thank you all for supporting this wonderful program!

Despite the cold and wind, there was no shortage of volunteers. In addition to the individuals that were fulfilling their one race volunteer requirement for the Chal-lenge Series, the usual gang was there to help. Special thanks to Suzan, David, Randy, George, PJ, Ron, Terry, Jim, Mike, Tony and Josie (sorry if I have forgot-ten anyone else here) for your help at this race and all you do at all the other races throughout the year. Without each of you the races would not be the quality

events that they are!

Thank you also to Mack Helbert, Commandant of the South Plains Det. Marine Corps League and the other Marines in attendance, we appreciate your help with

the race as well as your service to our country. Last but not least, thanks to all the runners who came out and participated despite the snow!

I look forward to working with the club again next year, directing this wonderful event.

VOLUNTEER COACHES NEEDED FOR TEAM KIDS CAFE No coaching experience is required to join the fight against childhood obesity

Volunteer coaches are needed for Team Kids Cafe. Team Kids Cafe is a running program for the children of Kids Cafe designed to encourage healthy lifestyles through diet and exercise and focuses on the benefits of running. Kids Cafe, an element of the South Plains Food Bank, is an after school feeding program de-signed to provide kids from low-income families healthy and nutritious meals and gives them a safe place to go after school. Using a curriculum that presents running as a fun activity, coaches will train and develop their Team Kids Cafe running team at a Kids Cafe location in Lubbock. The kids will experience running in a positive and enjoyable way by participating in running games, drills, relays and group activities. They will attend special train-ing clinics on running form and technique, running safety, injury prevention and nutrition. Coaches will serve as a positive role model by demonstrating and nurtur-ing teamwork, leadership, good sportsmanship and discipline. The benefits for the kids are a positive self-esteem derived from a sense of accomplishment and all the healthy benefits associated with running that include: doing better in school, managing stress, and reducing childhood obesity. Previous coaching experience is not required. All you need to bring is the desire to inspire! You will attend a special Coach’s Clinic to learn the Team Kids Cafe curriculum. The Clinic will be on Saturday, February 22nd, 2014, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the South Plains Food Bank. The Team Kids Cafe six week training program will begin the week of March 3rd, 2014 at each Kids Cafe location. Coaches will work with their teams for one hour, two times per week. Training days and times have not yet been finalized for all the kids Cafe locations, but most of the training will occur during the 4 – 6 p.m. window. The program culminates with the opportunity for the kids to participate for Free in the 7th Annual Kids Cafe Fun Run on Saturday, April 12th, held in conjunction with the West Texas Running Club’s Run for the Arts and the Lubbock Arts Festival. All Team Kids Cafe participants receive an event t-shirt and a finisher’s medal when they cross the finish line. The West Texas Running Club donates proceeds from this event to the South P lains Food Bank / Kids Cafe pro-gram. If you would like to volunteer or want more information regarding this coaching opportunity, contact Terry Dalton at 777-1456 or email [email protected].
