On Tuesday, May 21, residents will voteon school district budgets and school boardcandidates in Wantagh, Seaford andLevittown.

All three school districts are proposing2013-2014 school budgets below each dis-trict’s tax levy cap.

In March of 2012 New York State enact-ed the property tax cap which set a 2% taxlevy increase limit for school districtsunless 60% of voters agree to raise the limit.

However, each school district’s tax levycap is effected by different factors and canraise the cap above 2%.

WantaghThe Wantagh School District is propos-

ing a budget of $74,174,625 for the 2013-2014 school year. This represents a budget-to-budget increase of 3.40% or an increaseof $2,440,556.

This proposed budget represents a 2.79%tax levy increase. The allowable increase inWantagh for the 2013-2014 year is 3.71%.

The district must raise $55,785,769through taxes; the remaining revenue of$18,388,856 comes form state aid, inter-

fund revenues, reserves and other revenue.Some of the budget highlights include a

full-day kindergarten and an expansion ofthe district’s technology initiative forassessments and infrastructure.

Registered voters may vote on the pro-posed budget at Mandalay, Forest Lake andWantagh Elementary Schools on Tuesday,May 21 from 8 a.m.-9 p.m.

Seven school board candidates are run-ning for two open positions. IncumbentWilliam Russack’s challengers are RalphSpagnolo, Michael Costello, DavidHoffman, Donald Lang, Kera McLoughlinand Peter Mountanos. Jean Quinn is notrunning for re-election.

SeafordThe Seaford School district is proposing

a 2013-2014 budget of $60,437,334, abudget-to-budget increase of 4.58% or anincrease of $2,646,214.

This proposed budget represents a 3.59%tax levy increase. This is the allowableincrease for Seaford during the 2013-2014school year.

The district must raise $47,445,310

through taxes. This represents an increaseof $1,644,408.

A prepared statement from the SeafordSchool district said that there were“unprecedented increases in pensions, ris-ing costs in health insurances and the reali-ty of a $300,000 state aid reduction” thathad to be taken into account when craftingthis budget.

The proposed budget includes appropria-tions for the second phase of a five-yeartechnology plan and represents an agree-ment with the United Teachers of Seafordthat resulted in a hard salary freeze for allteachers in the 2013-2014 school years. Ahard freeze means no annual increases orstep increases.

School board members JeanMarie Winkand Bruce Kahn are running for anotherterm unopposed.

Residents may go to Seaford HarborSchool and Manor School between thehours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. to vote.

LevittownThe Levittown School District is propos-

ing a budget of $195,590,207, a budget-to-

budget increase of $5,593,626 or 2.9%.This proposed budget represents a tax

levy increase of 2.98%. The allowableincrease is 3.54%. The district is using $8.8million in reserves to keep the increaseunderneath the tax cap levy.

There is also a second proposition on theballot to set up capital reserve fund tofinance districtwide capital improvementsover the next 10 years.

The Levittown Library’s budget is alsoon the ballot. The library is proposing anexpenditure budget of $7,256,568. Thisrepresents an estimated total annual aver-age library tax of $413.42 a year, up from$404.25. Margaret Santer is runningunopposed for re-election to the libraryboard.

Voting will be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. atGardiners Avenue School, East BroadwaySchool, Levittown Memorial EducationCenter and Division Avenue High School.

Incumbents Peggy Marenghi and JamesMorgan are running against challengerPeter Zirogiannis for two seats on theschool board.

I would like to take this time to intro-duce myself to the Wantagh communityand announce my candidacy for a seaton the Board of Education. My name isDon Lang and I have resided in Wantaghfor the past nine years along with mywife, Meaghan, and our five wonderfulchildren.

Our oldest daughter is a seventh-grad-er in the middle school, three of our chil-dren attend Wantagh ElementarySchool, and I am happy to say that wealso just had a new baby. We originallychose to purchase a home in Wantaghbecause of the school system’s impecca-ble reputation. We have not been disap-pointed – in our years here, we havefound ourselves in a community ground-ed in family values with a strong dedica-tion to raising children.

I am running for the board because Iknow I can contribute more to this com-munity as a school board trustee.Because I have worked in education fornearly 20 years, I have considerableexperience working with families, chil-dren and educators in our rapidly chang-ing society.

I began my career as an athletic direc-tor and assistant principal at SewanhakaSchools and presently I work as a schooladministrator in one of the most highlyregarded and progressive school dis-

tricts on Long Island, the North ShoreSchools, where I hold the position ofdirector of athletics,physical educationand health. In thisdistrict, I am guidedby some of the mostwell respected andhighly esteemed lead-ers in the world ofeducation.

My current posi-tion has provided meexperience in hiring,evaluating and men-toring teachers andstaff by utilizing themost innovative eval-uation systems. I amalso responsible forhandling, creatingand maintaining amillion dollar budgetthat successfullymeets the needs offive schools.

Additionally, I work very closely withthe teachers union in order to maintainstrong relationships with teachers andstaff to reach the common goal of pro-viding the highest quality of educationto our students at the most reasonablecost possible.

I would like to bring this experience

to the students of Wantagh and provideour board with a new perspective in edu-

cation. It is my goal tofunction as an advocatefor our residents inorder to improve theoverall quality of lifehere in our community.By utilizing my knowl-edge of child develop-ment and sound educa-tional practice, I plan tomake decisions as aboard member that hasproven effective.

With the currenttrends and changes ineducation, it is impera-tive to choose practice,philosophy and proce-dure that have beensuccessfully utilized inpast practice in order tocreate a program that isefficiently able to guide

teachers and administrators through the

Common Core, state testing and APPR. In addition to my responsibilities asDirector of Athletics, I also coordinateall of Nassau County Baseball and serveas the chairman for the WellnessCommittee in my district. I earned a BAin Criminal Justice from WagnerCollege, a MA in Physical Educationfrom Adelphi University and a SchoolAdministration degree from CW Post.

My educational background, alongwith the lessons I learned from being adad, enable me to understand what thebest possible education environmentshould be for all children in this district.Every day, I seek to provide an environ-ment that embraces and promotes cre-ativity, innovation, and critical thinking,but most importantly fosters a lifelonglove of learning in every child.

Next week, voters go to the polls to vote onschools budgets and school board candidates. Wehave been publishing information about them for awhile, and now it is time to act!

We only want our readers to remember the fol-lowing: Teachers are the most important ingredi-ent in an education, and education is the mostimportant driver in an economy.

Think back to your own education. Who werethe teachers who most inspired you? And perhapsthere were some you felt demanded too much andyet ended up getting more out of you than youthought you could ever accomplish. Or they taughtyou important life lessons.

Think back on your work and how schoolhelped you in your career.

Universal education is a relatively new conceptin history, and think how rapidly we haveadvanced since then. We were able to mine the tal-ents and smarts of not just the elite but the entirecountry. And that is what has made America great.

To The Citizen:The 2013-14 Wantagh School budget

goes up by $2.4 million or 3.4% and thetax levy increase is 2.79% within the“allowable” tax cap. This seems reason-able but as always, the devil is in thedetails.

First some background information.The average salary for teachers isapproximately $95,000 and administra-tors over $125,000. Teachers at the topend of the salary scale ($130,000 plus)will retire with pensions in excess of$100,000 and administrator pensionswill exceed $130,000, free of stateincome taxes, plus lifetime medical ben-efits. All these perks are enshrined in thestate Constitution.

The district will add full-day kinder-garten at an additional cost of approxi-mately $600,000. This is fully paid forby the state the first year only. Six newcourses are being offered but theAdministration confirmed to me that sixolder courses are being scrapped, sothere is no net change. How much thenof this $2.4 million increase is beingallocated to our children?

At the budget workshops, the assistantsuperintendant of business provided thefollowing information: Pension contri-butions increase by $1.6 million ($1.43million for teachers and administrators)and health insurance costs are up by$400,000 (the district cites Obamacare).

The salary line for guidance coun-selors (they are considered teachers)shows an increase of 5.88%. Teachersand administrators are receiving raisestotaling about $500,000. These threeitems alone add up to $2.5 million. Thismeans that the entire budget increase of$2.4 million is being put to the benefitmainly of teachers and administrators,with nothing available for kids. This hasbeen the pattern for the past five years ormore, where we have put millions intothe school system and very little has fil-tered down to our children.

Further, if the budget passes or fails,teachers and administrators will receivetheir raises, health benefits and pensionincreases. If the budget passes, the kidsget none of the budget increase. If itfails, they stand to lose sports and otherprograms. So for teachers and adminis-trators it is a case of win-win, but forkids it is a no-win or lose proposition.

How did we arrive at his situation?Have we not been told time and timeagain to vote yes on the budget because“It’s all about kids, kids come first, avote for the budget is a vote for kids?”Have we been sold a bill of goods? Andwhere is the integrity we expect?

By virtue of their lobbying power, theteacher-administrator complex runs,dominates and controls the educationsystem in New York, all of it in the nameof our children. It is shame that there isno leadership from the Board of Ed andour state legislators in making the struc-tural changes needed to bring the systeminto balance. Without that, we are facing

a financial meltdown in the near future.Jude Netto

The Wantagh Board of Education andadministration make every effort to con-tain expenditures within its control. TheWantagh School District does not direct-ly pay pension benefits to retiredemployees. As mandated by law, allschool districts in New York State arerequired to contribute a predeterminedpercentage into the state pension fundwhile the employee is activelyemployed by the district. The WantaghSchool District must comply with thisstate regulation.

The 2013-2014 proposed budget is$497,000 below the district’s allowabletax levy cap limit and supports theCommon Core Learning Standards, full-day kindergarten, APPR mandates forteacher and principal evaluations, cur-rent security guards in all district build-ings, class sizes consistent with estab-lished district guidelines, all currentAdvanced Placement and college-levelcourses, the Horizons program, the cur-rent elementary foreign language pro-gram, all current athletic programs, allmusic and art programs, all currentextracurricular opportunities and contin-uation of late bus transportation.

The Board of Education and adminis-tration believe this fiscally responsiblebudget was developed to ensure contin-ued academic excellence and to providethe instructional and extracurricularopportunities our community expectsand the children of Wantagh need to becollege and career-ready upon gradua-tion. We encourage all residents to voteon Tuesday, May 21, from 8 a.m.-9 p.m.at Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantaghelementary schools.

a former Trustee and past President ofthe Wantagh Board of Education. I havethree grown children, all products of theWantagh Schools, and nine grandchil-dren, for whom I hold the highest ofhopes and expectations for their future.

I have an abiding interest inWantagh’s continuing success. There isa remarkable and refreshing pool of can-didates for the school board this year. Iam writing in support of Bill Russackand Kera McLoughlin.

Bill Russack is a personal friend ofmine who has been a consistent, steadfastand mature influence on the Board ofEducation. I carefully chose those adjec-tives because Wantagh’s most serioussore point has been an incredible rate of

turnover among our highest levels of pro-fessional leadership, including the litanyof names who have been Superintendent,Assistant Superintendent, AthleticDirector, and others. I am no stranger tomost of these people whom Wantagh haslost in recent years. In my opinion, BillRussack is precisely the right person toretain on the board so that, together withMaureen Goldberg, Wantagh can stop thebleeding of precious managementresources and talent.

I have worked with Kera McLoughlinon the Declining Enrollment and Full-day Kindergarten Committee and foundher to be insightful, thoughtful, andcarefully considerate of very complexproblems without easy or obvious solu-tions. I have since come to know herphilosophy as well as her background,especially in the critical realm of SpecialEducation.

She possesses a natural leadershipquality bolstered by very solid educa-tional credentials. Wantagh needsKera’s level of intellect and her provencognitive ability to understand, analyze

and effectively deal with very difficultissues. Kera’s appeal as a board trusteerests to a great extent on the ages of herown children, meaning, she has thehighest potential among the candidatesfor long and beneficial service toWantagh Schools.

Please consider voting for BillRussack and Kera McLoughlin as Boardof Education Trustees.

Schumer: Don’t leave taxpayers holding the bagU.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer urged the

Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA) and the White House to increase theshare the federal government is paying forrepairing public property damage by super-storm Sandy from 75% to 90% or more.

At a press conference on the Nautical Mile,Senator Schumer stood shoulder-to-shoulderwith local officials, including Mayor Robert T.Kennedy, Freeport Village Trustee Ron Ellerbe,Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murrayand Town of Islip Supervisor Tom Croci as wellas Long Beach Councilman Len Torres.

“Sandy was a storm of national significance,and the federal government should act accord-ingly, picking up as much of the tab as possibleso local taxpayers aren’t left holding the bag,”said Senator Schumer.

Federal law requires that FEMA pay atleast 75% of eligible costs after a disaster,

and once federal obligations meet or exceed$133 per resident, FEMA can recommendthe president to adjust the federal costs shareup to 90% or more.

On April 30 the Long Island PowerAuthority (LIPA) was obligated for over$267 million through FEMA’s PublicAssistance program for Superstorm Sandy.With this obligation, New York State hasexceeded the $133 per capita requirementand FEMA can now recommend that thepresident adjust the federal cost-share.

“Now that we’ve cross this critical thresh-old, the federal government can pay for 90%or more of the storm damage, and that’s whatthey should do,” said Senator Schumer.

The Robert T. Stafford Disaster Reliefand Emergency Assistance Act allows thepresident to adjust federal cost-shares forFEMA’s Public Assistance Program. The

Stafford Act requires FEMA to pay at least75% of eligible costs, including repair,restoration and debris removal. Once feder-al obligations meet or exceed $133 per capi-ta of the state’s population ($2.6 billion inthe case of New York), FEMA can recom-mend that the president adjust the federalcost-share from 75 to 90%.

“The impact of Hurricane Sandy on LongIslanders has been devastating,” observedSupervisor Murray. “Local governments andtaxpayers could be slammed again – thistime by a storm of Sandy-related debt – if thefederal government does not pay for thelion’s share of superstorm recovery costs.On Long Island, we spell hurricane relief ‘S-C-H-U-M-E-R.’ ”“The devastation of Superstorm Sandy is

still with us and will be for months to come.Senator Schumer continues to assist the resi-

dents of the Village of Freeport and we can-not thank him enough for his efforts. It is thisincrease in assistance which will allow thevillage to make much needed repairs, andcontinue to provide services to its residents,”said Mayor Kennedy.

Senator Schumer noted that, in the past,FEMA has almost always made such a rec-ommendation to the president. Mr. Schumerexplained the enormity in which superstormSandy damaged New York State; the stormdestroyed homes, businesses, and infrastruc-ture and has cost New York State billions ofdollars to repair.

Mr. Schumer added that SuperstormSandy victims in New York have alreadylaid out hundreds or thousands of dollarsbecause of the storm and that this federalcost-share adjustment would save local tax-payer money.

Meet Seaford’s school board candidatesBruce Kahn

I have been a resident of the SeafordSchool District for 26 years. I am mar-ried and have two children. My songraduated from Seaford High School in2012 and my daughter in 2007. I amcurrently a school board member sincewinning election in 2010 and haveserved on theSeaford Board ofEducation's AuditCommittee both prior to,and after becoming aboard member.

I have served on theBudget AdvisoryCommittee for manyyears, and also served onthe Bond Committee.Additionally, I attend ourPTA meetings and schoolevents on a regular basis.

My children have beenin a wide variety of aca-demic courses and pro-grams over the years,including: SAILS, Multi-age, SUPA and both advanced and APclasses.

Additionally, they were active in avariety of school sports, clubs and musicprograms. They also participated inLittle League, PAL, CYO and HTBsport programs. I coached both flagfootball and girls softball for manyyears. I also served as a chaperone onmany class trips. My wife was active inthe Harbor PTA for many years.

I graduated Baruch College of the CityUniversity of New York with a Bachelorof Business Administration degree. I haveover 32 years of diverse work experiencein both the public and private sectors. Ihave experience with budgeting, account-ing, auditing, personnel matters, fiscalcontrols, system design and development,policy development and capital projects.

While I cannot go into details here of

my professional accomplishments, I canassure the taxpayers of our school dis-trict that I have a wealth of knowledgein a multitude of areas and have appliedmy expertise in managing both large andsmall scale projects.

My goal in being elected is to increaseeducational opportunities for our stu-

dents. We, as a district,have been through toughfiscal times over the pastfew years. We have seenhuge increases in pensioncosts, rising health insur-ance costs and increasesin our labor costs. Theseverity of these increaseswas magnified bydecreases in state aid andnew unfunded mandates,which included additionalstudent testing andteacher evaluations.Lastly, the tax cap haschanged the way schooldistricts need to look at

their budgeting process.Over the past three years, the board

has taken a hard look at our costs andhas been working to contain them. Wehave successfully found a buyer for theSeaford Avenue School and hope toclose on the sale by the end of next year.

This school year we implemented yearone of a five-year technology plan withthe help of the recently formed AdvisoryCommittee for Technology (ACT). Thiscommittee is made up of local residentswho currently work in the IT field alongwith our director of technology.

Together we as a community can getthrough these times and bring new ideasto our school district that will benefitboth our students and residents. I thankyou for your past support and am askingfor your continued support to lead ourdistrict to an even better future.

I have been in the field of educationfor the past 29 years. I began my careerin the New York City Public Schoolssystem. As an active member of myparish, I served as a Religious Educationteacher and currently serve as aEucharistic Minister.

Seaford residents for 23 years. Our sonand daughter attended the Seafordschools and been afforded great oppor-tunities through their school experi-ences.

What is the mostimportant issue facingyour district?

My love for the townof Seaford has been the inspiration formy desire to run for the Seaford Boardof Education. I believe my experienceas an educator and active communitymember can help keep Seaford in agood place. My goal is to do this in away that keeps the residents’ needs inmind by building up our reserves sothat we can provide financially soundfuture budgets while at the same timebringing back programs that are cru-cial to the success of Seaford’s stu-dents.

SEAFORD FIREFIGHTERS and Wantagh Hazardous Materials techniciansattempt to plug a leaking acetylene tank Saturday morning, April 27. The inci-dent occurred in the basement of an apartment house complex on JerusalemAvenue near Alken Avenue when the tank began leaking and caught fire asplumbers were working. The Seaford Fire Department quickly responded andextinguished the fire which had spread from the tank into the basement.Wantagh’s Haz-Mat Team was called for assistance due to the nature of the gas.

CEREC stands forCEramic

REconstruction

CEREC is a CAD/CAM system consist-ing of an acquisition unit which is a spe-cialized digital camer connected to a com-puter which captures images of the tooth(teeth) to be restored. This small cameratakes the place of the physical impressionthat patients tend to dislike because theprocess makes patients uncomfortable.The images are then processed and thecomputer generates a proposal for theshape and form of the ceramic restorationusing a virtual or computer generatedmodel.

We have recently undergone a major soft-ware update. The acquisition unit nowgives us a “Biogeneric” proposal. Bylooking at the size and shape of the neigh-boring teeth the computer will generate atooth with similar anatomy for a more harmonious fit. That is the CAD (computer aided design) part.

This information is then sent to themilling unit (the second part of the sys-tem) where the new tooth (crown, veneeretc.) is created from a solid block ofporcelain or ceramic material. This is theCAM (computer aided manufacture) partof the system.

What’s so great about CEREC is that it

allows us to do one/ visit dentistry. Iteliminates the need for a temporaryrestoration while we wait for the finishedrestoration to come back from the lab. Theone thing nobody seems to have enough ofis time. The CEREC system saves timeby eliminating multiple trips to the dentist.The patient will also get to see their crownbeing made right in front of them.

Nassau County is proclaiming Mayas Perinatal Mood DisordersAwareness Month. As we celebrateMother’s Day in May, this proclama-tion will assist in raising awareness ofthe challenges that many new mothersface as a result of experiencing a peri-natal mood disorder (PMD).

“I am proud of the outstanding workand the continuing efforts of theNassau County Perinatal ServicesNetwork in raising awareness ofPerinatal Mood Disorders,” saidCounty Executive Edard P. Mangano.

On May 8 the county lit the dome ofthe Theodore Roosevelt Building tosupport new mothers and their fami-lies and to promote public awarenessof this serious disorder.

PMD is the most common compli-cation of pregnancy, affecting one inevery 8-10 women during the perina-tal period, which includes the entireperiod of pregnancy up to one yearafter delivery. This major publichealth concern affects at least 3,500families in Nassau County.

While the exact cause is unknown,contributing factors may be biologi-cal, psychological or hormonal.Family and friends can play an impor-tant role by recognizing the warningsigns of PMD, providing support andhelping the woman to seek help. Thewarning signs may differ among

women but common symptomsinclude the following:

• trouble sleeping or sleeping toomuch.

• changes in appetite.• feeling irritable, angry or nervous.• feeling exhausted.• not enjoying life as much as in the

past.• lack of interest in the baby.• lack of interest in friends and fam-

ily.• feeling guilty or worthless.• feeling hopeless.• crying uncontrollably.• feelings of being a bad mother.• trouble concentrating.• thoughts of harming the baby or

harming herself.In May 2012, the Nassau County

Perinatal Services Network launchedthe “Ask the Question” campaign.The “Ask the Question” campaignencourages those who are in contactwith a new mother to ask how she isdoing, how she is coping....giving thenew mom permission to say she needshelp, to give her hope and to let herknow she is not alone.

The overall goal is to create a safe-ty net by working together withhealthcare providers to improve therecognition and connect with treat-ment options.

Dear Seaford resident,The Board of Education and administra-

tion of the Seaford School District remainsteadfast in the mission to provide our stu-dents with the best education possible in themost difficult fiscal times in recent memo-ry. We continue to operate under the con-straints of New York State’s tax levy limit.

Adding to this challenge, we were one ofthe few districts in all of New York State toreceive a reduction in state aid of approxi-mately $300,000 for the 2013-2014 schoolyear. In the face of these challenges weplanned a proposed operating budget thatcontinues to provide all of our students aneducational experience that is rich and valu-able, leading them toward the New YorkState goal of being college and career readyat the time of graduation. Again we willaccomplish this with an eye toward thelong-term fiscal health of the district.

In light of the still sluggish economy aswell as the reality that several of our fami-lies continue to struggle in the aftermath ofHurricane Sandy, the board and administra-tion decided to work within the confines ofthe tax levy limit. Using the New YorkState formula for calculating the tax levylimit Seaford’s tax levy increase is 3.59%.This percentage is in line with many LongIsland school districts.

One of the most common questions thatcomes up is “How will this impact my taxesfor next year?” If all assessments remain

the same as the current year, your taxes willincrease 3.59%, however, the SeafordSchool District does not control theassessed value of an individual’s home,Nassau County does. Therefore, the actualdollar amount change in your taxes is basedupon three factors, the tax levy, your indi-vidual assessed valuation, and that of therest of the school district.

The board successfully negotiated a set-tlement with the United Teachers ofSeaford which includes a full salary freezefor 2013-2014. This will enable the districtto preserve the academic programs current-ly in place and remain within the tax levylimit.

The goals of the board and administra-tion for the 2013-2014 school year are:

• Implement the 2013-2014 budget withan emphasis on fiscal responsibility andlong term economic planning.

• Preserve the current elementary schoolprogram including full-day kindergarten.

• Preserve the nine-period instructionalday at Seaford Middle School.

• Provide funds for additional extra-cur-ricular opportunities for students through-out the district.

• Preserve the high school academic pro-gram including Advanced Placement andcollege-level courses.

• Implement year two of the district’stechnology plan which will bring much-needed new computer technology to the

students in the Harbor and Manor Schools.• Provide athletic opportunities at the

high school with junior varsity and varsitysports, and at the middle school, Winter Iand Winter II seasons. Intramural athleticswill be available for students in the fall andspring at the middle school.

• Increase the security presence in allschools.

After superstorm Sandy, he spentcountless hours at Cedar Creek Parkassembling and distributing care pack-ages and clothing to those devastatedand in need of supplies. Having alsoworked with Mike, he is the utmost pro-fessional and is well respected, honest,trustworthy and loyal.

support for Kera McLoughlin asWantagh Board of Education Trustee. Ifirst met Kera several years ago whenour sons were in the same kindergartenclass. In the time that I have known her,I have grown to admire and respect hercaring and concern toward all children.

Over the past two years, I have alsohad the pleasure of working with Keraon Wantagh SEPTA’s board. She servedas vice-president of Ways and Means,and she currently serves as co-president.I can honestly say I have never seensomeone more dedicated to volunteeringtheir time to help our children.

As vice-president of Ways and Means,Kera worked tirelessly to create andplan fundraisers such as our FamilyMovie Night in order to help grow ourbudget. Once she succeeded at thisendeavor, she worked with the board tospend those funds in ways that would

best serve our children and support theirparents. As co-president, Kera continu-ally impresses me. SEPTA has thrivedunder her leadership. If a problem aris-es, Kera will examine the issue from allsides to make certain the resolution iswhat is right for our children. In addi-tion, Kera is always researching pro-grams and events that will serve ourcommunity.

She was instrumental in startingSEPTA’s Family Fun Day as well asbringing speakers such as Dr. EdwardPetrofsky to our membership. While shewill often be the one to present ideas tothe board, she is always open to sugges-tions from the rest of the board. Kera isa reflective person who is always evalu-ating the job she is doing. Kera neversettles for less than the best from herself.

While working with SEPTA, theWantagh Elementary School PTA andthe Declining Enrollment CommitteeKera has formed many strong relation-ships in the district. I believe this isbecause Kera is someone who commu-nity members feel comfortable reachingout to with their concerns. Not only isshe knowledgeable, she is alsoapproachable and always willing to helpanyone in need.

As a former Social Studies teacher,Kera is passionate about education andbelieves all children have a right to thebest possible education. I believe as atrustee Kera will work hard to ensurethis belief is realized for the children ofWantagh. Kera is intelligent, insightfuland hard-working. If elected, Kera willbe a true asset to the students ofWantagh and our entire community.

will be voting on two Wantagh Board ofEducation trustee positions. Recentyears have been challenging for LongIsland taxpayers and public school dis-tricts, including Wantagh. These chal-lenges will not relent but worsen. Aftercareful consideration of the issues, can-didate platforms and capabilities, I willbe casting my votes for incumbent BillRussack and newcomer KeraMcLoughlin as the best candidates tonavigate us through this immediatefuture.

Bill Russack, Wantagh’s “unsunghero,” has had an exemplary record onthe Board of Education. While the busi-ness of running a school district can becomplicated (and political), Bill hasbeen steadfast in approaching decisionswith integrity, intelligence and a senseof fairness.

His significant accomplishmentsinclude influence on recent budgetswhich have had some of the lowest taxlevy increases in recent years whilemaintaining educational opportunities.Going forward, Wantagh, both our kidsand as taxpayers, need his considerableexperience backed up by his excellenttrack record.

Kera McLoughlin is a relative new-comer whom I’ve come to knowthrough district meetings, committeesand parent associations. She is a smart,quick study who has a wonderful abilityto listen, synthesize issues and produceactionable solutions.

I’ve seen her transform SEPTA in ashort period of time from an organiza-tion gasping its last breath into a vibrant,

As I have offen said, “Kera is myhero!” She Has a busy life like all ofus but seems to have the right balancebetween her family, her passion foreducation and the children of the com-munity. She has brought a new set ofideas and programs to SEPTA. Sheincreased membership so much thatWantagh SEPTA was awarded thePTA Membership Expansion Awardfor the most growth in Nassau Countyin 2012.

As the acting PTA president ofWantagh Elementary School, I wouldjust like to say how involved Kera isat our PTA meetings and our commu-nity meetings, and since the day sheenrolled her child in school she hasbeen a constant advocate in the schoolfor the children. She has volunteeredfor many committees in addition tobeing co-president of SEPTA. We alsomeet with her once a month in thesuperintendent’s office meetings andshe always has creative programs tobenefit the entire community. Kera isalso the person who came up with thepicture ID cards for special needs kidswho may not be able to communicate.SEPTA also created the citizenshipaward to Brittney Motis, who came upwith a play group for special needskids.

Kera would be a welcomed additionto our Board of Education. She hasconsistently demonstrated the quali-ties that our community needs.

At Wantagh High School, it’s throughthe Wind Ensemble. For the third time,Wantagh’s honors band performed atCarnegie Hall on Tuesday, April 16, incollaboration with the Hewlett HighSchool band.

Mindy Dragovich of Wantagh andJames Dragovich of Hewlett workedtogether to prepare a program for theesteemed performance hall of New YorkCity, and its success was staggering. Itwas a once in a lifetime performancenone of the students are likely to forget.

The event was hosted by Four Windsand included four other ensembles. ThePatchogue Medford ChoralEnsemble/Vocal Jazz Ensemble, theNorth Babylon High School ConcertChoir, the Marlboro High SchoolSymphonic Band, Chorus, and

Orchestra, and the Baldwin WindSymphony also performed, precedingthe Hewlett-Wantagh Festival Winds.

Every group produced outstandingmusic, and proved themselves to beworthy of performing on a stage wherethe likes of Leonard Bernstein, DukeEllington, George Gershwin, BennyGoodman, and the New YorkPhilharmonic have performed.

The Hewlett-Wantagh group openedtheir slot with “Dakota Fanfare” by ErikMorales, a high-energy piece conductedby Mrs. Dragovich. Its driving rhythmwas electrifying and left the audiencebreathless with stunning ensemble cohe-siveness and style.

“Canticle” by Jack Stamp, was a workthe group dedicated to the families andcommunities affected by the tragicevents at Newtown, Connecticut. Thepoem “Do Not Stand at My Grave and

Weep” by Mary Elizabeth Frye wasinterwoven into the piece and wasvoiced by Wantagh High School’s ownassistant principal, Jim Brown. Theintense musical arrangement, as well asthe students’ own emotions comingthrough in their playing, made for verytender and touching moments for every-one in the hall.

Mrs. Dragovich conducted the nextpiece, entitled “Metroplex” by RobertSheldon. The three-movement workdemanded all of the complexity andmusicality of a college level ensembleand the high school students met thisdemand and more. It opened melodi-cally, was followed by a jazz section andconcluded with a fast paced and highlytechnical climax.

The closer of the night, an arrange-ment of “The Star Spangled Banner” byJack Stamp, was played to a standing

audience, with hands over their hearts.Performed just a day after the events atthe Boston Marathon, the classic tuneheld a much deeper emotional qualityfor everyone. All were affected andmany were moved to tears. It was a trulybeautiful moment of reflection andpeace amidst tragedy.

Performing at Carnegie Hall is anabsolutely amazing experience and thestudents in the band will alwaysremember the “practice, practice, prac-tice” it took to get them there.Wantagh’s music program has yet againproven itself to be outstanding in allrespects. The Wind Ensemble contin-ues to strive for excellence, and withopportunities such as this one, it is hardto deny that they have reached anexemplary level of achievement.
