OnLinuxhosts,thescriptcreatesacompressed.tgzfileintheusershomedirectory.Becausethescriptisnotrunasroot,thescriptdisplaysmessagesindicatingthatitcannotcollectsomeinformation.Thisisnormal.IftheVMwaresupportteamneedsthatinformation,asupportrepresentativewillaskyoutorunthescriptfromthecommandlineasroot.Forinstructions,seeTorunthesupportscriptonaLinuxhostonpage 19.

To change the virtual hardware version of a virtual machine
1 Intheguestoperatingsystem,makeanoteoftheNICsettings.
Specifically,ifyouhavespecifiedastaticIPaddressforthisvirtualmachine,aftertheupgrade,thatsettingcouldgetchangedtoautomaticassignmentbyDHCP.
TochecktheNICsettings,usethemethodappropriateforyouroperatingsystem.Forexample,onWindowsXP,youcanusetheControlPanelsNetworkConnectionsitemtofindinformationabouttheTCP/IPaddressforthevirtualmachine.
2 Shutdowntheguestoperatingsystemandpoweroffthevirtualmachine.
3 Selectthevirtualmachineand,fromtheWorkstationmenubar,chooseVM>Upgrade or Change Version.
4 CompletethepagesoftheChangeVersionwizard.
Whenyouselectahardwarecompatibilityversion,youseealistoftheVMwareproductsthatarecompatiblewiththatversion.IfyouselectWorkstation4or5,youalsoseealistofWorkstation6featuresthatarenotsupportedforthatversion.
5 Poweronthevirtualmachine.
