As a young person who has used this area since I was a small child I hope you’ll agree that I am in a fair position to be able to speak on behalf of others like myself. Firstly, the field provides an essential play area for very many youngsters, some of whom have nowhere else nearby to go. The city council provides very few play areas for youngsters and this area is, for many, an essential part of their leisure time: a place where it is safe to meet friends for a chat and to play games such as football and cricket. I know that for some older folk, they find the sight of groups of youths congregating to be worrying and even threatening, but I am sure that this is something exaggerated by the media rather than the reality of life here. The local police are rarely if ever called to any incident within the area and life is made more fun by the existence of this wonderful facility. Secondly, there is the loss of valuable habitat. In an urban area such as ours, I believe that all green areas should be preserved wherever possible. The field in question is large and contains several mature oak and ash trees as well as some dense areas of shrubbery, hawthorn hedging and undergrowth. This provides an unusually good habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, especially birds such as finches, tits and even nuthatches and treecreepers. Wouldn’t you agree that to permanently remove this established habitat would be a tragedy and also surely be to go against current ecological thinking? In addition, you must agree that a green area of this size is something of a rarity in our city, let alone in this area. It increases diversity and adds value in so many ways, including the two I have mentioned in detail above. But also, there are other advantages. Such an attractive area adds to the value of people’s homes as well as to the quality of people’s lives. A stroll through a green area such as this, including the many of your employees who take their lunches in the field, must surely provide relief

Dear Mr Jonson,

I am writing to complain about the plans I read of in yesterday’s edition of the local Leicester Mercury newspaper that stated you are planning to extend your company’s car park into the field we youngsters currently use for football and other sports.

A stroll through a green area such as this, including the many of your employees who take their lunches in the field, must surely provide relief from the stresses and strains of everyday life. In this way, your company will really benefit because its employees feel more relaxed when they return to their work. I could add many more reasons why such an unusual feature should be kept green and pleasant rather than grey and ugly.

In conclusion, I would like to ask you to reconsider your plans to extend your company’s car park and consider the needs of the local youngsters who live nearby, of other residents, of the local wildlife and even your own employees who enjoy the use of the field daily. I appreciate how important the car is these days to everyday life, but I do hope that some other solution can be found that is more ecologically friendly and less damaging to the local neighbourhood.

Thank you for giving time to read my letter and I hope I have given you some valuable food for thought,
