IS IT A SENTENCE?Writer’s Workshop: Simple sentences
HOW DO I KNOW A sentence must have a subject and verb Ask yourself “Who or what did or is
something?” That is your subject.
Ex. My hair wakes up stupid. Who or what is the sentence about? …My hair
My hair is the subject, now what is the verb Ask yourself, “ What are they or what did
they do?” That is your verb.
Ex. My hair wakes up stupid. What does my hair do? …wakes
PLEASE NOTE Fragments are missing a subject or
verb Do not assume that a capital letter and
a period make a sentence complete Ing form of a verb does not make a
sentence. Ex. Students read. (sentence)
Students reading. (not a sentence)
