A local church hall let us use a meeting room at a reasonable rate and Bare Writers was born. We had to find a name for ourselves and decided on Bare Writers not only because Bare is the suburb of Morecambe where we hold our meetings, but also because we try to strip our writing down, expose emotions, “bare”. ‘Each of us is old enough to have lots of life experience and we are able to draw on those experiences in our writing, although it must be said we are not too old to enjoy and look for “new” life experiences. ‘All our members have been writing for a long time and most of us have had work published, but we find that just meeting up with like-minded people is a tremendous boost, because as everyone knows, writing can be a solitary experience. We meet twice a month and try to give each other support and encouragement, generating ideas with exercises and homework. If anyone has work in progress and they want to read it to the group for feedback, helpful critiques are always given. ‘We have just published our first anthology, High Tide, and are all justifiably proud of the result. The book is split into four sections with a section for each author and contains short stories and poems as diverse as the members themselves. ‘The group is still a little on the small side but Bare Writers are open to expansion and would welcome new members if they would like to get in touch.’ Email: [email protected] ; [email protected] THE SCP FOUNDATION ‘The SCP Foundation (short for “Special Containment Procedures” or its motto, “Secure, Contain, Protect”) is an online writing community and wiki focused on short, flash fiction-style horror and science fiction pieces,’ writes Drewbear, one of its administrators. ‘The core of the community’s works are documents from the fictional Foundation, an organisation dedicated to preserving normality by containing and suppressing information about anything that would threaten humanity’s perception of a rational universe. These documents detail the descriptions and containment procedures for fantastical, horrific, and potentially world- ending creatures, objects, people, and phenomena. ‘While the SCP file is the core writing format on the site, there is also an extensive subset of more traditionally formatted short and medium-length stories within the setting of the Foundation’s universe, ranging from “slice of life” vignettes to epic battles for the survival of the world. And far from consisting solely of writers, the SCP Foundation community has produced a large amount of artwork, music, games, and even movies. ‘The community is international in scope, with thriving sister sites in seven other languages, each of which not only has translated pieces from the original website, but an extensive collection of original works. ‘A fanbase tens of thousands strong also congregates in the SCP Foundation’s official Facebook page, Reddit forum (/r/SCP), Tumblr (scp-wiki-official), and IRC chat channels to share their creations, theories, and ideas regarding the Foundation and its wider universe.’ Website: www.scp-wiki.net; subreddit at www.reddit.com/r/scp wnp18-19 march.indd 19 23/01/2015 11:57

ROTTINGDEAN WRITERS’ GROUP, EAST SUSSEX

BARE WRITERS‘We are four writers who met on a writing course in the seaside town of Morecambe in Lancashire,’ writes Jean Lindsay.

‘We got on well and when the course came to an end, decided to meet up again, but this time as a writers’ group. A local church hall let us use a meeting room at a reasonable rate and Bare Writers was born. We had to fi nd a name for ourselves and decided on Bare Writers not only because Bare is the suburb of Morecambe where we hold our meetings, but also because we try to strip our writing down, expose emotions, “bare”.

‘Each of us is old enough to have lots of life experience and we are able to draw on those experiences in our writing, although it must be said we are not too old to enjoy and look for “new” life experiences.

‘All our members have been writing for a long time and most of us have had work published, but we fi nd that just meeting up with like-minded people is a tremendous boost, because as everyone knows, writing can be a solitary experience. We meet twice a month and try to give each other support and encouragement, generating ideas with exercises and homework. If anyone has work in progress and they want to read it to the group for feedback, helpful critiques are always given.

‘We have just published our fi rst anthology, High Tide, and are all justifi ably proud of the result. The book is split into four sections with a section for each author and contains short stories and poems as diverse as the members themselves.

‘The group is still a little on the small side but Bare Writers are open to expansion and would welcome new members if they would like to get in touch.’
