In September 2014 the Jack Studio invited playwrightswith a connection to south east London to submit unper-formed plays to the theatre. The three plays which formour season were drawn from these submissions.

Lucinda Burnett (Talking to Alice) Lucinda graduated with distinction from the Advanced TheatrePractice MA at Central School of Speech and Drama. Theatrecredits include: Come to Where I'm From (Royal ExchangeTheatre, Paines Plough); Organised (Unicorn Theatre); Some OfUs (Oval House Theatre); George's Dad (Rose Theatre).Lucinda was part of the Future Perfect attachment at PainesPlough Theatre Company and is a member of the Old Vic NewVoices company. Lucinda lives in West Norwood.

Joseph Wilde (Dog Country)Joseph is a graduate of the Royal Court and Chichester FestivalTheatre Young Writers Programmes, and of HighTide FestivalTheatre’s Escalator Playwright attachment. Cuddles, Joseph'sfirst play, opened at the Ovalhouse Theatre in 2013. In May itwill tour nationally before transferring to New York. Othertheatre includes The Pier (Oxford Playhouse/Marlowe Theatre)and The Van Dyck Vanishments (Marine Studios/Milo WladekCo). Joseph also writes for TV and radio. In 2014 his play TheLoving Ballad of Captain Bateman won the BBC Drama ImisonAward. Joseph lives in Camberwell.

Olga Nikora (rock paper scissors)Olga was born in Eastern Europe and moved to New Zealandwhen she was a child. Olga began writing while studying for herlaw degree. Her first play Tightrope Bonnie was shortlisted forthe Verity Bargate Award. Theatre credits: In the Company ofStrangers (Soho Theatre, staged reading); Then they came forme (Greenwich Theatre). Olga lives in south east London and iscurrently working on a short film about the diverse and multi-cultural nature of London.

To launch this year's Write Now Festivalwe have a selection of short plays towhet your appetite.Chosen from submissions to the Jack, these playsexplore different aspects of our chosen theme. We’re giving playwrights the chance to show theworld what a real leader looks like (or failing that, toshow us where we’re going wrong).What defines a leader? Do they command or defer?Do we pick them, or do they pick themselves?Heart warming, thought-provoking and humorous,these short plays are drawn from UK and international submissions.

Workshops1•Big Adventures in Small WorldsIn this workshop we use automatic writing exercises,drawing on our past experiences to create authenticfamiliar worlds for our characters to inhabit. This‘small world’ is then a safe place to explore a ‘bigadventure’, allowing us to investigatechallenging, scary and unwieldy themes andevents. Led by Anna Jordan, winner of the2013 Bruntwood prize.

2•Synopsis SurgeryGet it right before you write! This workshop is abouthoning a workable blueprint for your play. Pitch and kickideas around and get feedback from group discussion tomove your play forward. Led by David Bottomley, LiteraryManager, Jack Studio Theatre.

3•Inventing In/credible! CharactersA practical look at how to craft truthful and believablecharacters with real potential to inspire great drama.Come with a character in mind or create one on the spot.Led by Suzanne Gorman, Artistic Associate at SohoTheatre and Artistic Director of Maya Productions.

In Conversation

Following performances of all three plays there will be ashort discussion session with members of the creativeteam. This is open to all and free if you have bought aticket for that night's performance.Dates: Thursday 14th May, Friday 15th May, Friday 22nd May.

After aspectacular bust up at a nightclub, Adam findshimself in the care of trainee social worker Harriet.As their relationship develops Harriet finds herselfstruggling to cope, and both are pushed to breakingpoint. A warm and poignant new drama aboutfriendship, mental health and the costs of caring.

In 2011, Trish and Mike havechanged beyond recognition since they last met.They rekindle a long deadattraction, though theelephant in the room isthreatening to trample themboth. Dog Country is abouta generation of kids whotried to become adults atthe worst possible time.
