WRGB ORGANISERS THANK VOLUNTEERS AND PARTNERSWith 164 competitors from 23 nations, the longest competitive route in recent history, a return to Chester after 20 years and a new RallyFest stage at Cholmondeley Castle that drew 10,000 fans, the 2016 Dayinsure Wales Rally GB could not have been a better showcase for UK rallying.

The continued backing of the Welsh Government as our principal funding partner remains invaluable, alongside the support of our 2016 title partner, Dayinsure, and our other partners and suppliers; their involvement has made a huge contribution to the progress the event has made in recent years.

Crucially, the rally would not have been possible without the support of almost 2000 volunteer marshals and officials, covering so many varied roles. Whether contributing to the safety, logistics, promotion or the smooth running of the event, their efforts are sincerely appreciated by everyone at the MSA and IMS, not to

mention the wider rallying community of competitors, teams and fans.

We hope that the rally was as special for you as it was for us and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

How did WRGB go from your opinion?It is strange to try and answer that question. In Rally Control we are actually very isolated as to how the event is being received, but the feedback we have got is that it was a great event.

The new areas of Cholmondeley Castle and the time control in Chester were both really popular with a great atmosphere. Out in the stages it was a proper Rally GB, a challenging route with fast stages that demanded a lot from every crew. The challenge of 100km with no service or change of tyres on Saturday added a new strategic challenge to the whole event.

Have you got a message to the volunteer marshals and officials?Any rally cannot take place without the assistance of the marshals or without the hours of volunteer time spent by the many officials in the planning of an event. Dayinsure Wales Rally GB is no different, except the numbers needed are over 2000 to deliver set up, reconnaissance, special stages and then the breakdown afterwards. It may have been an earlier date but the weather was still at best inclement at times whilst you carried out your duties in the best of humour and to the highest standards. Many of the competitors have told us about the welcome given to them by the marshals and the great work that you do.

You all helped to deliver the biggest and best Rally GB – the longest competitive route since moving to North Wales, the new visit to the centre of Chester, the RallyFest at Cholmondeley Castle, that exceeded all expectations and the best special stages to be found anywhere – thank you very much for that.

What was the most challenging moment?People often say, “well done, you must be delighted with how it went.” But when you are in Rally Control you know of all the battles that are being dealt with to keep an event running. We had some challenges with medical issues on stages that were dealt with very professionally. These are things that you can’t plan for but you have procedures in place and experts on hand to ensure that the best is done for those needing help and that the rally can continue.

D2BD RALLIES TO THE CAUSEOne hundred schoolgirls enjoyed a rare insight into the world of top-flight international rallying when the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB opened its doors to Dare To Be Different

Just over half of the girls were daughters of employees of the Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK Engine Plant where the service park was based.

There were visits to the Volkswagen Motorsport, Hyundai Motorsport and M-Sport World Rally Team. Also on the agenda were media tuition with Louise Goodman, a fitness and nutrition workshop, the Pirelli tyre-changing pit-stop challenge and an engineering exercise with Toyota.

D2BD’s Susie Wollf said: “It is the first time we have been able to incorporate rallying into our programme and it was a real privilege for the girls to get so up close and personal to rally teams operating at the very top of their game.

“I must admit I felt a tinge of jealousy that some of them had the opportunity to sit inside the world championship-winning Volkswagen Polo R WRC – having enjoyed a passenger ride in one of Citroën’s DS3 WRCs last year, I know just how incredible these cars are!”

MSA AND KWIKTRAK NEGOTIATING TRACKING SYSTEM FOR UK RALLYINGThe MSA can confirm that it is in negotiations with specialist UK company Kwiktrak (UK) Ltd regarding a live vehicle tracking system for UK stage rallying.Both parties had originally anticipated that the system would be ready for introduction in a phased manner from the start of the 2017 season. However implementation has been delayed and it is intended that the system will be introduced at a later date, which will be confirmed as soon as possible.

Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “We are pleased to be able to confirm that MSA is negotiating with Kwiktrak regarding the supply of a live vehicle tracking system, which will represent a very significant step forward for stage rally safety. Working towards a date for implementation has taken longer than we had anticipated however, and it is now clear that our previous

target of the first events of the 2017 season was too optimistic. As soon as we are able, we will confirm a revised timetable for introduction.”

The proposed Kwiktrak system features bespoke software meeting the sport’s requirements, including – not limited to – being able to track up to 150 cars on any one event and provide coverage of up to four special stages simultaneously. There would also be a dashboard console allowing crews to communicate with Rally HQ in the event of an incident, including by voice if it is an emergency. An added benefit is that tracking data would be available to organisers and crews for up to 30 days following an event.

FINAL CALL FOR RENAULT MSA AWARD ENTRIESYoung writers and snappers have until 21 November to enter the Renault MSA Young Motor Sport Journalist and Photographer of the Year awards.

Established in 2002, the awards are open to those aged 30 and under. An expert panel will consider the applications; each winner will receive a trophy and a cheque for £1,000 at the MSA’s Night of Champions ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club in January.

The two winners will also receive a year’s provisional membership of the Guild of Motoring Writers, the world’s largest organisation of automotive editorial professionals.

HOW TO ENTER Candidates must have been aged 30 or under on 1 January 2016 and be able to demonstrate published work involving domestic UK motor sport. Application forms are available by email from media@msauk.org.

WILLIAMS TO CELEBRATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY AT ASIWilliams Martini Racing will kick off its 40th anniversary celebrations with a headline feature during Autosport International at Birmingham’s NEC in January (12-15).The F1 team built its motorhome at the 2016 show and will return in 2017 with an even more head-turning feature. Full details will be announced in the coming weeks but show organisers have already revealed fans will be able to immerse themselves in four decades of Williams heritage as part of a centerpiece that will also see a complete overhaul of the Autosport Stage.

GREENPOWER GETS ENVIROMENTAL TROPHYGreenpower was officially presented with the MSA Environmental Award during the 2016 International Finals event at Rockingham.

The MSA Environmental Award recognises outstanding contributions towards environmental responsibility and sustainability within motor sport.

Established in 1998, the Greenpower Education Trust is a charitable organisation and a leading promoter of careers in engineering. Greenpower also runs an annual competition for schools, colleges and universities, challenging pupils and students – guided by their teacher and an industry mentor – to design, build and race an electric car. This involved around 500 institutions and 8000 young people.

a restructuring of specialist committees that came into effect in 1977, the Autocross and Rallycross Sub-committee was created partly in response to growth of both

disciplines – especially rallycross, which had been granted a British championship title for the first time in 1976.

BOARD PLEDGES AIR AMBULANCE DONATIONSThe first in a series of £2000 cheques was presented to Northern Ireland’s Air Ambulance service last week, following a decision by the MSA Board to continue donating sums from the National Court Fines Account.

In 2015 the MSA pledged up to £10,000 to every UK Air Ambulance service over the next five years, drawing the money from fines collected under UK motorsport’s judicial process.

MSA Director Nicky Moffitt handed the first donation to Air Ambulance Northern Ireland chairman Ian Crowe. “The fact that the MSA is making donations to Air Ambulance charities is nothing

new in itself, however this is the first time that a sustained run of donations has been pledged,” said Moffitt.

Crowe added: “As a fledging Air Ambulance charity we are extremely grateful to the MSA for their pledge to support us for the next five years. This initiative by the MSA demonstrates how they value the importance of HEMS in motor sports.”

MSA EXTENDS CONTRACT WITH KART ENGINE SUPPLIER VORTEX (OTK)Following the success of this year’s relaunched MSA British Kart and Junior Kart Championships, the MSA has agreed a two-year extension of the Vortex (OTK) engine supply contract.

This means that Vortex (OTK) will supply the CIK-homologated DDJ engine for the MSA British Junior Kart Championship (CIK OKJ class) and the DDS engine (also CIK-homologated) will continue to be used in the MSA British Senior Kart Championship (CIK OK class) until the end of the 2018 season.

Once again, there will be a special prize for the MSA British Junior and Senior Kart Champions: works drives with a Vortex team (Tonykart Racing Team or Kosmic Racing Department) in the 2017 CIK-FIA World Championships.

Moreover, these classes will also be adopted in the UK at club level. The engines used at this level will be the same but with differences relating to the senior class weight and tyres.

Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “We have been delighted with the impact of the MSA British Kart Championships in 2016, especially considering the Junior title returned after a three-year absence. Part of this success is directly attributable to the fantastic Vortex (OTK) package and so we are pleased that UK karting will continue to benefit from this new relationship for at least a further two years.”

SNELL K98 STANDARDThe MSA Technical Department wishes to remind competitors that the Snell K98 karting specific helmet standard will be removed from the list of acceptable helmet standards in karting with effect from 1 January 2017. This was notified in the 2016 Blue Book.

COMPETITION NUMBERSSome observers and marshals have reported that the legibility of competition numbers on vehicles in circuit is becoming an issue. Therefore the MSA wishes to remind competitors of general regulation (Q)11.1.1 which requires the numbers to be in place prior to scrutineering, where it will be checked for compliance on position, legibility and size.

Commonly reported issues include numbers being poorly spaced, the background not extending the required 5cm beyond the numbers (example pictured), and numbers being ‘lost’ within the vehicle livery without the required delineation. The requirements of (J)4.1 and (Q)11.1 to 11.4.2 are clear and descriptive. Scrutineers will advise competitors to rectify any non-compliant displays.

SEAT MOUNT FAILUREA scrutineer sent the above image to the MSA following an accident in which the competing vehicle heavily impacted the tyre wall. As can be seen, the seat has ripped out of its mounting points, both front and rear.

It is clear that the material used for the mounting points was insufficient, as it was too thin and there were no spreader plates in place beneath the bracket. It was also noted – as can be seen from the image – that the mount on the left had failed in the past and was re-welded.

Scrutineers have been reminded to check seat mounts carefully and as such competitors are advised to ensure the suitability and compliance of their mountings at all times. For further guidance, please email technical@msauk.org.

AcademyEquipping the UK’s most promising young drivers

LEWIS BROWN NAMED RSF MSA YOUNG DRIVER OF THE YEAR 2016Junior racing driver Lewis Brown was named the RSF MSA Young Driver of the Year 2016 after a five-way shootout at iZone Driver Performance Centre, Silverstone, last week (11 November).

The accolade is awarded each year to a member of the MSA Academy’s AASE programme, a three-year course delivered in conjunction with Loughborough College.

The five finalists this year were: Brown, 17 from Lincolnshire; Zach Anderton, 17 from Chester; Nathan Edwards, 18 from Kent; Ben Green, 18 from Essex; and Emily Rogers, 17 from Essex.

The day consisted of seven sessions including physical and mental assessments, a simulation evaluation including eye tracking and on board analysis, and interviews with members of the judging panel.

The panel comprised: Derek Walters, Racing Steps Foundation; Jonathan Day, MSA Director of Development; James Wozencroft, MSA Coach ; Anna Kemp, Loughborough College; and Jack Benyon, Motorsport News.

Brown scored highly in all seven assessments and is now set to receive a trophy and £1,000 at the MSA Night of Champions in January. He said: “I am over the moon about winning the MSA RSF Young Driver of the Year Award, it was such a privilege to be nominated for the award never mind

winning it. I’d like to thank everyone who works at the MSA Academy and Derek Walters from Racing Steps Foundation for giving me the opportunity to show my talent.”

This year Brown finished third overall in his maiden season in the Ginetta Junior Championship, scoring race victories at both Donington Park and Brands Hatch.

MORRIS WINS DAYTONA DRIVEMSA Team UK’s Seb Morris has secured himself a Daytona 24hr Prize Drive by winning the 2016 Sunoco Whelen Challenge. Morris will race in January’s prestigious Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona after last month, 31 October, being confirmed as the winner of a fully-funded prize drive in the 2017 staging of the American classic - having topped this year’s Sunoco Whelen Challenge.

Off the back of his maiden season in endurance racing in the British GT Championship, where he finished third overall with one win and five podiums, Seb will now go on to compete in his first ever 24 hour race.

Run by the Anglo American Oil Company, the Sunoco Whelen Challenge is a season-long contest where drivers from a selected number of Sunoco-fuelled categories are pitted against each other with their respective results equating to an average score each weekend.

“It was disappointing to miss out on the British GT title this year but my sights have also always been set on winning the Sunoco Whelen Challenge and racing at Daytona, so I’m very proud to have achieved that”, said an elated Seb.

King makes FP1 debutTeam UK’s Jordan King made his F1 free practice debut for Manor Racing last month (21 October), at the Circuit of the Americas, Texas, as part of the warm up to the United States Grand Prix.

How did it feel to drive in an official session at a Grand Prix?“The whole experience was something very special. It’s difficult to put into words when you’ve spent 12 years of your life – half my life – pushing towards something and you achieve it. For that 90-minute session alone I probably put in 40 hours of preparation work. The only way I can describe it is that afterwards I just felt really content. Internally, I had a massive smile! I delivered under pressure, I didn’t make a mistake, I did everything I needed to and I accomplished one of my goals.”

What was your programme during the Free Practice 1 session in Austin?“We did a mixture of everything really. The team wanted to get a balance check on a longer run, then we did a shorter run and then another longer run. We worked on balance, tyre degradation and performance.”

How did you feel it went?“Very well. Everything was very solid. It was a new circuit for me, so there was a lot to learn. But overall it was a very positive day and everything went in the right direction. The car stayed in a straight line, the team got the data it needed and I think I did a reasonably good job.”

BRADSHAW’S SURTEES SUCCESS15-year-old Callum Bradshaw won the Henry Surtees Karting Challenge at Buckmore Park last month (26 October).Fresh from his CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy success, Bradshaw competed against GP3 and European F3 drivers to take the first ever win for the MSA Academy team.

The six-strong Academy team consisting of Bradshaw, Keiran Shanks, Troy Beswick, Ross Martin, Ben Green and Will Tregurth, competed in the sixth annual HSF Challenge, with Martin and Green finishing in the top seven and claiming a BRDC British F3 test and a Porsche fitness assessment respectively.

Also competing in the challenge, but representing Racing Steps Foundation, were MSA Team UK members Ben Barnicoat and Jake Dennis.

Bradshaw said: “What an amazing day! Massive thanks to the MSA for supporting me and the HSF for their support to young drivers. My prize is incredible: Carlin Simulator Session and a day testing an F4 Car, Clio Cup Car half day test and full Puma race suit, three pairs of gloves, 2 boots, running shoes and trainers!”

PERFORMANCE MASTER CLASSESMSA Academy Coaches worked with junior championships this month running workshops on nutrition and providing one-to-one coaching.Academy Coach James Wozencroft worked with drivers in the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship at the last round of the season, Brands Hatch (22-23 October). Wozencroft spent time working with drivers individually throughout the weekend as well as running a nutrition workshop and track walk.

Over the same weekend fellow coach Adam Gould worked with Junior Rally UK drivers on one of their championship rallies at Pembrey, South Wales. Gould worked with the drivers individually through the day, watching stages and giving feedback on their performances.

CO-DRIVERS AT WRGBThe newly selected MSA Academy co-drivers spent a weekend at Wales Rally GB watching stages, networking with influential members of the rallying community and speaking to members of the M-Sport and Hyundai World Rally Teams.

Accompanied by renowned co-driver Paul Spooner and MSA Performance Manager James Wozencroft, the co-drivers toured Rally Control with M-Sport Logistics Manager Iain Tullie, before meeting Hyundai World Rally Team Manager Alain Penasse. Penasse offered the co-drivers an insight into what it takes to make it into a leading WRC team, before they returned to M-Sport to witness a live WRC Service.

On the Saturday the co-drivers spent the day watching the WRC stars in action at Cholmondeley Castle Rallyfest before returning to the service park for a chance to meet with VIP guests and influential people within the rallying world.

While three of the seven co-drivers spent the weekend with the Academy, Aaron Johnston, Keaton Williams and Siobhan Pugh competed in the National rally while, Tom Woodburn competed alongside Rhys Yates in the International event.

With the schools being on half term this year the level of participation was a bit of an unknown, however the numbers participating in the challenge and the associated conversations that followed spoke for themselves and negated any doubts that I had.

“It was interesting that the majority of those we engaged with had little knowledge of the range of entry level motor sport available within our discipline structure. As well as raising awareness of the grass roots disciplines we also handed out many fliers promoting local motor clubs within each region and information on how to get involved, be it through volunteering, competing or simply as an enthusiastic follower.”

GO MOTORSPORT STEM SUCCESS AT WRGBGo Motorsport ran another successful wheel change challenge competition as part of the STEM activities in the Wales Rally GB Service Park last month (27-30 October). From Thursday to Saturday visitors competed against each other to emulate the professional service crews, swapping wheels on a Sebring Sprite replica in the quickest possible time to take their place on the leader board.

The team were also present to advise people on how to get involved in the many competing and volunteering roles.

Jess Fack, Go Motorsport Development Manager said “It was great to show visitors to this world class event how they too can become involved in the sport. We had visitors, Rally Makers and even professional service crew members try the wheel change competition. It was also rewarding to help show people how easy it is to move from spectating to being more actively involved, by guiding them to their local motor club and bringing-alive the sense that club motor sport is really accessible and great

fun too. I’m sure those conversations will lead to more volunteers and prospective competitors approaching clubs, so please make them welcome”.

RegistrationsRegistrations will open in October for the British Schools Karting Championship 2017 and we invite you to get together with your friends and enter a team in this fun and competitive championship. Your team could be topping the podium at the National Final next summer!

Organised by the British Automobile Racing Club, the BSKC is an arrive-and-drive nationwide team based knockout competition for school and college students aged 13 to 18. All of the equipment – karts, suits, helmets, etc. – is provided so you do not need anything to compete, other than enthusiasm.

The Facts:Each team consists of three drivers who all attend the same school / college.

All drivers must be aged 13 years or older on 1st January 2017.

Each driver must be at least 1.57m (5’2”) with shoes on.

Only one driver in the team may hold (or have previously held) a racing licence at the level of Karting National B or higher in the years 2015, 2016 or 2017.

Each team must appoint a Team Captain who is responsible for the team as a whole including any drivers under 18 years of age. This is usually a teacher but it can be a parent with the permission of the school / college.

The entry fee is £180 per team, including VAT. Discounts are available for schools / colleges entering four teams or more.

The Format: October – December: Registrations open online.

January – March: Mid-week, late afternoon, Practice Sessions and Local Finals.

April – early May: Regional Finals.

1st July: National Final.

The Practice Sessions and Local Finals will take place at your local participating kart circuit. The top teams from the Local Finals are invited back to compete against their peers in a Regional Final. The most successful teams in each Regional Final qualify to compete in the National Final.

Prize for the Highest Placed MSA Licence Holder: The highest placed MSA Licence holder in the BSKC 2017 National Final will, subject to meeting the criteria and conditions set by Ginetta Cars, win the fantastic prize of a free entry into the 2018 Ginetta Junior Scholarship with the chance to win entry into the 2018 Ginetta Junior Championship.
