Newsletter January - March

It is with sadness that I take over the role of Newsletter Editor.

Pamela Ritter did an outstanding job and continually received

accolades for her efforts. With the freedom of retirement, it was time

for her to put away the laptop and get out the travel brochures and

explore the wonders that she and Bill can experience together. We

wish you well on your adventures.

Hopefully, someone out there will get the urge to put their fingers to

the keypad, and become our Newsletter Editor. I consider the

publication of our Newsletter is of utmost importance and must be

maintained. Any items of interest will be most appreciated!!!

The last three months of 2016 were so hectic.

Endless Christmas gatherings which had many of us juggling our

diaries. Fortunately the past three months have been the complete

opposite. Not one party, morning tea, cruise or bus trip. Time to

recharge the batteries and rev up for another bonzer year, with

Bundaberg’s “Salute to Servicewomen” in July, the highlight of the

year (in my opinion).

The AGM saw the return of all 2016 Committee Members with the

addition of Vi Speis and Lou Vaughan as General Committee

Members. Myself and Truss are now also delegate and proxy

respectively, to the Council of Ex Servicewomen (CESW).

Most importantly, Maureen Souter will expand our commitment to

our members with the introduction of a Volunteer Welfare Register.

The Register will identify those in need of a visit/phone call/card and

the branch member happy to help meet that recognised need.

I cannot replace Pamela but hopefully I will endeavour to produce an

informative Newsletter each quarter.

Many of our Branch members are also members of the Southside Ex-Servicewomen’s Social Group who meet quarterly at Sunnybank RSL sub-branch “Drop-In Centre” The Southside ESW Group was founded 6 years ago by Julie Chapple (ex -WRAAC)

Her vision was to bring a group of ex servicewomen together in a totally social environment

And what a great success it has been.

Fifteen years of Membership

Good Bye Good Luck

At first we thought that would

be the end of our Group but

fortunately, at Julie’s farewell,

Peta Roberts (ex-WRAAC) put

her hand up to carry on

organising our gatherings.

New members are always

welcome. There are no fees, no

committees, no meetings and

the only item on the agenda is

fellowship and laughter.

Some thirty plus ex-WRAAC and WRAAF have enjoyed wonderful fellowship, great food, lots of laughter, and have played mind-bending, hysteri-cal and trivial games in a most relaxed atmosphere. The walls often shake with laughter! Julie has decided to move to

Hervey Bay in search of a

more picturesque surrounding.

WRAAF girls with Julie Chapple at Sunnybank

In recognition of their loyal membership to RAAFA

Queensland Division, our President Carol McCool

had the honour of presenting our members with

their certificates at our January AGM.

Congratulations

Beverley Rowcliffe (absent due to family

Andrew Sisters Comes to Town

Celebrating their 80th

On Tuesday 28th February we enjoyed a

nostalgic musical journey through the 1940’s—

50’s with the Andrew Sister’s Tribute Band who

performed all the favourite wartime songs.

It was a Brisbane City Council (BCC) free

lunchtime concert and thanks to our Ipswich

girls, particularly Fay Ison who organized a

meet, greet and listen, followed by lunch.

Next BCC free lunchtime concert in the City

Hall which may be of interest will be the Aus-

tralian Army Band Brisbane on Tuesday 18th

April 2017

“THEY WILL MISS US” ‘THE WAAAF SAY GOODBYE’ (Anonymous)

While searching through some old files and boxes in the No. 1 Stores Depot Tottenham, a member of the WRAAF came across an old yellowed piece of paper dated November 1946. This scrap of paper gave a link with the past - with those Airwomen who had taken their place in the Service in time of war and who had set the standard for those who served in peace.

They’ll miss us when we’re gone and huts are bare, And the gardens grow rank of want and care, When our barracks stand still like a ghost in the night, With windows all black with want of light And the compound is silent, calm and still, As the shadows cast on a lonely hill. For ’tis all of the WAAAF that will remain, Just their shadow cast on life’s’ vast plain. Where the years must roll, like mists away Until memory dims of that long past day, When women worked like men arrayed, And mustered with them on each parade. Gone - - - half forgotten, but never quite, For occasional things must come to light A woman’s name --- on some old page Of a voucher faded and dim with age, Or a bobby pin found in some deep crack Will set their memories drifting back Drifting back through the months and years

They were filled with pleasure, surprise and tears. When women and men worked hand to hand To keep their nation and save their land, Until at last, when war was won, They took their leave, for their job was done

Farewelling the service, not forgetting the life, Or the mates they met sharing fun and strife, Or the duties given --- being late on parade, And the times they had, or the things they made While serving their time in the mess at night Among those cooks so friendly and bright.

‘Twas a strange ole life, but it had its charm And it did for most, more good than harm. So at last most have left it sadly, Though many there were those who left in gladly But none will forget their service years

The WRAAF sequel will be published in the next Newsletter

SHE could fly a plane before she was licensed to drive a car.

Squadron Leader Samantha Freebairn

Royal Australian Air Force

“When I was 16 years old, I used to drive to my flying lessons on my L plates. I’d get in a plane and fly on my own but then my grandad had to sit beside me while I drove home.”

She has come a long way since those early days. She is currently the most senior woman pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force, the first female Air Force pilot to return to operational flying after hav-ing children and is employed as the Operations ‘B’ Flight Commander for 36 Squadron and their fleet of eight C17 Globemaster aircraft. Samantha has been selected as a 2016 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. This honour is bestowed by the World Economic Forum each year to recognize the most distinguished leaders under the age of 40, nominated from around the world. Her selection is in recognition of her record of professional accomplishments, her commitment to society and her potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world through her leadership. As an honouree, she has been invited to become an active community member of the Forum of Young Global Leaders for a period of five years. The community forms a unique global network of peers from diverse backgrounds and fields, with a highly visible opportunity to significantly impact world affairs and shape the global agenda. This is not Samantha’s first award. In 2014, she won the QLD Telstra Business Women’s Award in Business Innovation for her Graduate Pilot Scheme, which incentivises military aviation to women who had never previously considered it. This success-fully doubled women pilot numbers in the Air Force in 2 years, when they had remained stagnant for the prior 30 years. Samantha has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters of Management in Leadership, is a mum of 2 young children, the wife of a truly patient man and is an operation C-17 Globemaster pilot, flying combat and humanitarian relief missions.
