Anarkik3D Design:3D haptic modelling using a
force feedback device for real sense of touch and movement
in 3 dimensions
To quote Peter Dormer:“It is not craft as ‘handicraft’ that defines contemporary
craftsmanship:it is craft as knowledge that empowers a maker to take
charge of technology.”
The tools we use as humans are extensions of our bodies. It is not hands that have built our world, it is tools we
have made. Peter Musson 2011

Flowing fabric by Nervous System. An X-Ray of the chain mail like material
reveals the hidden hinges.
Nervous System: bespoke software, Kinematics, breaks down 3D CAD model into tessellated, triangular segments of varying sizes. Use of algorithms to add hinges, fold into smallest possible volume to optimize 3D printing process.

And then there are the 3D printed shoe designs:
By United Nude founder, Rem D Koolhaas
Rem D Koolhaas enlisted architects Zaha Hadid, Ben van Berkel & Fernando Romero, & designers Michael Young & Ross
Lovegrove to design sculptural shoes made entirely on a 3D printer.

My move to digital: 1990 ….• 2D CAD: laser cutting • 3D CAD printing
Rhino (old version 3)
How then to get a 3D digital model?
To 3D print you need a digital 3D model, in a specific format. Having a good 3D model is critical!

‘Tacitus’ Research Project 2000 – 2004Proof of Concept Awards 2005 - 2006
investigating haptic technology as a more intuitive way of working digitally in 3D for designer makers/applied artists

Company founded 2006/2007. Spin-out from the Tacitus Research Project (ECA and University of
Edinburgh) 2000 - 2004:
Anarkik 3D Design is haptic 3D modelling software
Creative freedom: suits all ages. • Non-CAD users
• Serendipity as default
Haptic = virtual touch• Robust 3DoF haptic device:
• coherent 3D interaction• easy navigation
• intuitive to learn/use• non complex interface
• straight forward range of tools
Great for output to 3D printing
Doing something right!• 2008. develop own brand product: Anarkik3D
Design as affordable haptic 3D sketch modelling package for Creative sector• Application: 3D printing, CNC milling
• 2007-2009. SMART Award, SE Business Support• 2011. Finalist: educational Bett Award
• 2013. Winner: 3DPrintShow Global Award - Best Consumer Software
• 2014. Finalist: 3DPrintShow Global Award - Best Consumer Software
• Nov 2014 and Nov 2015. Innovate UK Award re. Learning Technology – to develop haptic platform.

New: Anarkik 3D Design version 3: non complex interface
Example: Creating torus of different proportions, controlled with Alt key. Scaling using x, y or z keys and moving haptic device grasp in any direction. Easy! Fun, serious fun.

44
Get it right for designer makers and applied artists and it will be right for other creatives too. Great for schools.
45
Be inspired because as designer makers you do have the means to participate in these exciting technologies.
