Women of the World festival invited Storm in a Teacup female arts collective to curate an area of the Southbank Centre to showcase the colourful and powerful influence of zine culture on women from different backgrounds, art disciplines and activist scenes. Storm in a Teacup invited Soupa creative network to facilitate zine making workshops to engage the audience in contributing their creativity and thoughts to a collaborative zine that would act as a souvenir and a legacy of the event. In this first edition of the

Women of the World zine you will find beautiful artwork and an unedited voice from women (and girls) who attended the zine making workshops. As well as zine workshops, there were talks from zinesters like Shebang Zine, Magpies Zine and Fat Quarter Magazine and from art collectives; Nest Gallery and VV Collective. We were also treated to some intimate acoustic performances from female music artists programmed by Emmy the Great and Kate Nash. We hope this zine will give you a taster of this unforgettable experience.

Soupa Creative Network was founded in 2005 by Josephine Spencer as a way for creatives to showcase their work, share experiences and work on collaborative projects.

Soupa.co.uk showcases the work of over 35 (and growing) creative’s, Soupa also blogs about creative events, competitions, news and book reviews. The new ‘links’ page is a new resource set up and kept

Storm in a teacup is a London-based collective set up in 2009 with the aim of promoting women in the arts. Fed up with finding no platform for our amazingly talented female musician, writer, poet, and visual artist friends we decided to do something about it.

In 2010 STORM IN A TEACUP helped to programme LADYFEST TEN festival celebrating 10 years of the feminist arts DIY subculture with a 3 day festival of music and arts. As well as taking part in Women of the World festival at the Southbank Centre, we are currently planning more feminist cross-cultural events for 2011.

up to date by founder Josephine Spencer to spread the word on good creative resources such as illustrators, printers, publishing companies and a host of other useful weblinks.

Soupa gets involved in events such as the Women of the World festival to help to run workshops, organise live illustration and bring people together and get creative! Find out more at soupa.co.uk.

In 2007 she supported Frank Turner and released a second CD, “Feel Better”, to critical acclaim. In 2010, folk legend Billy Bragg heard her music and invited her to play at Glastonbury on the Leftfield stage, sharing a stage with Bragg and Frank Turner. Brigitte Aphroditehttp://brigitteaphrodite.co.uk/

Brigitte Aphrodite is more than a musician. She is a creation, a mini universe, a mass of contradictions: dreamy yet sharp, stupid yet fabulous. Playing the festivals this summer including: Latitude and Reading and Leeds.

Nimmo and the Gauntletshttp://www.myspace.com/nimmoandthegauntlettsuk

Represented by the Joe Strummer Foundation for new music, Nimmo and the Gauntletts, from North West London, are Sarah Nimmo, Reva Gauntlett, Joshua Faull and Hannah Rose Mentored by Emmy the Great and touted by the Big Chill as ones to watch for 2011, the band has been said to play an exciting mixture of jazzy folk and dub to acoustic, heavily instrumented by a young saxophonist. Invoking the spirit of early punk and new-wave, while maintaining the heart of modern London indie. In 2010 they played at Winterwall and The Secret Garden Party festivals. This year their adventures take them to The Great Escape in Brighton and Camden Crawl in London.

Clare Fielderhttp://soundcloud.com/clare-fielder

Clare Fielder crafts beautiful, lyrical and dreamy songs. Stripped back, raw with a euphoric innocence. Influenced by artists like Laura Marling, Angus and Julia Stone and Simon and Garfunkle her delicate songs awaken and evoke the dark and beautiful emotional mysteries we all share.

Clare is also studying english literature and creative writing at UEA and decided to write songs after she heard the Tegan and Sara album ‘The Con’.

Martha Rosehttp://www.myspace.com/martharosemusic

Martha was given a guitar in January 2007, wrapped up in newspaper. She met Ben Joel in a tent in Bestival and he proceeded to learn the banjo. In October 2008 she met Jess in Berlin, and they played at some parties on broken guitars and upside-down bowls. The trio sing songs that speak of the olden days, a delicate sense of darkness, and hazy memories of summer. About the things they see, and the things they imagine. They like the pace of the river. The twilight. And the sad, deep wells inside us all.

Verity Flecknellhttp://myspace.com/verityfolk

Verity is an indie folk/blues artist who is setting out to challenge perceptions of the two F*words-Folk and Feminism. “Effortlessly enveloping classic Americana, guttural blues and sweet folk sounds, Verity is a rare breed of performer. Simultaneously theatrical yet utterly without pretence” (The Girls Are..) Raised in Germany and England her music takes in influences from Ani Di Franco and Laura Veirs to Billie Holiday and the White Stripes. Verity is founder of Storm in a Teacup- a London based female arts collective, was one of the main organisers of Ladyfest Ten festival and works for the English Folk Dance & Song Society. Catch Verity at Latitude festival this year performing her Johnny Cash songs in the Literary Arena.
