WOW Hall Notes - September 2009

On Sunday, September 27, KRVM welcomes W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) plus special guests Ehren Ebbage and Molly Jenson. During the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Works Progress Administration — putting millions of people back to work and creating infrastructure that still benefits millions today. To help pull us out of the new depression, eight veteran musicians have formed the W.P.A. Originally begun as The Scrolls in 2007, W.P.A. contains parts of of the bands Nickel Creek, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Elvis Costello and the Imposters, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The members are Sean Watkins (guitar), Sara Watkins (fiddle), Glen Phillips (guitar), Benmont Tench (piano), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Greg Leisz (various instruments), Pete Thomas (drums) and Davey Faragher (bass). Their debut album is set to be released September 15, 2009. Glen Phillips is best known as the singer and songwriter of 1990s alternative rock group Toad the Wet Sprocket. Phillips began Toad the Wet Sprocket in 1986, at the age of 16. The band recorded five albums and had many major tours until 1998. Phillips’ first solo album, Abulum, was followed by a self-released live album and solo touring, along with a reunion tour with his former Toad bandmates. In 2000 Phillips recorded a collaboration with Nickel Creek that was later released as Mutual Admiration Society. In 2005, Phillips released the critically acclaimed Winter Pays For Summer, which included the radio single “Duck and Cover”. The next year Glen released his third proper solo album, Mr. Lemons. In 2007 he reunited with Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek as well as Luke Bulla to perform as part of The Various & Sundry Tour. Phillips released an EP titled Secrets of the New Explorers in January, 2008, and performed a solo acoustic show at the WOW Hall that February. He also began recording an ensemble project in Jim Scott’s recording studio and by September 2008 the collective settled upon the name Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). Luke Bulla started touring and singing with his family band at the age of four and took up the fiddle at seven. Over the next few years, he won the National Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho, six times in his respective age categories, with a seventh win in the Grand Champion division at age sixteen – the youngest ever to have earned the title at the time. Upon moving to Nashville to begin work as a full time musician, Luke’s first couple of years were spent as a member of Ricky Skaggs’ band, Kentucky Thunder. Bulla has performed and/or recorded with Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Kevin Costner and Modern West, John Paul Jones, Earl Scruggs and Bruce Hornsby. Luke is also the most recent full-time member of the Jerry Douglas Band. Sean Watkins began his tenure with Nickel Creek playing mandolin, but later switched to guitar. Nickel Creek released five albums and a greatest hits CD and won a Grammy for This Side. In addition to playing with Nickel Creek, Watkins has released three solo albums. His early material was contemporary bluegrass, but he has since incorporated other influences into his music (especially indie rock). His sister Sara Watkins plays violin and sings background vocals on the two latest solo albums. In 2006, Sean and Switchfoot member Jon Foreman started a collaborating duo that eventually became the Fiction Family. Their debut was released in January. Sara Watkins debuted in 1999 as the fiddler of the progressive bluegrass group Nickel Creek. Aside from singing and fiddling, she can play the ukulele and the guitar. Her solo debut, Sara Watkins, was released on Nonesuch Records in April. Sara Watkins was produced by bassist John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame, who first performed with Watkins on a Mutual Admiration Society tour in 2004. In 2008, Sara performed as an opening act for Tift Merritt, Robert Earl Keen and Donavon Frankenreiter. In April she appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon with John Paul Jones on bass, Questlove of The Roots on drums, and her brother Sean Watkins on guitar. Benjamin (Benmont) Tench, III was a founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. In addition to playing piano and Hammond organ with the Heartbreakers, Tench is also known as a skilled session musician, having recorded with dozens of notable artists, including Johnny Cash, U2, Stevie Nicks, Lucinda Williams, Sam Phillips, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, The Rolling Stones, Don Henley, John Prine, Ringo Starr, John Fogerty, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Waylon Jennings, X, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Carlene Carter, Alanis Morissette, The Ramones, The Screaming Trees, The Tragically Hip, The Divinyls, The Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day, The Cult, Fiona Apple, Lone Justice and Neil Diamond, as well as many others. Greg Leisz (pronounced “Lease”) is an American multi-instrumentalist, playing lap and pedal steel guitars, guitar, mandolin and bass. Little known by his own name, his playing has appeared on recordings by Tiger Army, Bill Frisell, Dave Alvin, Tracy Chapman, The Smashing Pumpkins, Matthew Sweet, The Jayhawks, Beck, Me’shell Ndegeocello, Bruce Cockburn, Wilco, Shawn Colvin, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, Whiskeytown, k.d. lang, Sheryl Crow, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, to name only a few. Formed in Birmingham, England in 1979, The English Beat have been celebrating their 30th Anniversary touring the USA. Led by founding member, lead vocalist and songwriter Dave Wakeling, their sparkling live show includes the band’s best-known originals including “Mirror in the Bathroom”, “Save It for Later”, “Stand Down Margaret” and “I Confess”, and their inspirational covers of “Tears of a Clown” and “Can’t Get Used to Losing You,” as well as the hits Wakeling scored with ‘80s pop icons General Public, such as “Tenderness”, “Never You Done That” and “I’ll Take You There”. A part of the 2 Tone ska music revolution of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s alongside The Specials, Madness and The Selecter, the Beat perfected their own unique brand of the Punky Reggae Party memorialized in the Bob Marley song of the same name. Recent reviews and attendance at shows, including a gig at the WOW Hall on March 31, have been nothing short of superb. “There are many perks to being in a pop group,” says Wakeling, “the money, the fame, the fast cars, and the sometimes even faster women, they can all be good, but for someone to tell you that your songs have been a part of the soundtrack of their life for a quarter century is the greatest honor a troubadour can ever receive.” The English Beat’s first gig, in March 1979, occurred at the same time as the Three Mile Island nuclear incident in Harrisburg, Penn. Introduced as “the hottest thing since the Pennsylvania Meltdown,” the band has ever since been known for its support of progressive issues and organizations such as Greenpeace, Rock the Earth, CND, Amnesty International, The Smile Train and Heal the Bay. Wakeling was the executive producer of the Greenpeace benefit album Alternative NRG in ‘94, which raised funds and awareness for the issue of global warming (he worked full time for Greenpeace in L.A. from 1990- 95). Recorded and mixed entirely by solar power, the album contained great live tracks by R.E.M., U2, Annie Lennox, Jesus and Mary Chain and many others, while the mobile solar generator known as “Cyrus” also acted as a traveling exhibition and lecture room about renewable energy, which, notes Dave, “thank heavens looks like is at last becoming a national priority.” With this, and social equality in mind, he also set up the MySpace site Skabama, he explains, “to help our new 2 Tone President make his way into The Black and White House!” Today’s English Beat features Wakeling on lead vocals and guitar; Wayne Lothian, a former member of General Public’s ‘90s incarnation, on bass and vocals; Antonee First Class, toaster; Rhythmm Epkins, drums and vocals; Nat Love, sax and vocals; Ray Jacildo, keyboards and vocals; and Jai Vatuk, guitar. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. The English Beat Beginning with September, the WOW Hall Notes will be available digitally online. This move is mainly the result of new Post Office regulations that require two sticky tabs on every letter-sized piece of mail consisting of newsprint stock. The new tabbing requirement not only adds expense, it more than doubles the total number of volunteer hours needed to complete the mailing project. This year’s Eugene Celebration is September 4-6, and once again the WOW Hall is a “Late Night” Stage on Friday and Saturday nights. Friday’s show is hard rock featuring Northwest Royale, Hyperthermia, Only Nightmares, Tallboy Shotgun and Pantheon. Saturday the crew from Soul Sessions will transform the Hall for an evening of House and Techo, with upstairs and downstairs DJs to be announced.

Northwest Royale had one of the best summers a band could have when they rocked Seattle on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Now they’re coming back to the WOW Hall for the fi rst time since they pulled in 300 souls for their CD release party in March. Band members Beef Wellington (drums), Kenny Nestor (bass), Travis Zering (guitar) and Blake Owens (vocals/keyboard) have been winning new fans with their new EP, The Bleeding Edge.

Blake comments, “When Boots from LMDP told us the WOW Hall was helping to bring metal to the Eugene Celebration, we couldn’t say no. Block parties need rowdy music, dammit —- and we’re just the band to bring it.”

Hyperthermia originated in Alaska in 1986. Their style is characterized as hard core metal rhythms, driving beats

and shriveling screams — a cross between Sepultura and Hatebreed. The shows are high energy, groove oriented, head bangin’ madness.

With ground-stomping riffs, thunderous drumming, classic melodies, slippery solos and vocals as versatile as their music, Eugene Only Nightmares is a fi ve piece heavy metal band, plain and simple. Only Nightmares plays heavy metal the way it should be played: raw, emotional, unhinged and aggressive with a sampling of all the things a human should think of when they hear the phrase, ‘heavy metal’.

Combining infl uences from: Metallica, Pantera, Slipknot, Machine Head, Testament, etc.,

Tallboy Shotgun is a bludgeoning four piece Thrash Metal band hailing from Vancouver WA.

Pantheon is a four piece, female fronted hardcore metal band rising out of Eugene/Cottage Grove. The band was formed in the mid year of 2007 and, after going through some changes with members, Pantheon is now guitarist Justin Velez, bassist Guy Lindgren, drummer Jeremy Figueroa and vocalist Breanna Snyder, who started the band at age 15 along with Justin V.

Admission is free with a Eugene Celebration support wristband, $5 without. Friday the doors open at 6:30 pm and showtime is 7:00. Saturday the doors open at 9:00 pm. ★

it’s not abstract, is mostly about trees, and beings or people I’ve seen in trees... trees with spotted owls perched in them, trees with tree sitters in them, embroidered trees... . Yes, lately the embroidery I learnt in my youth in England, has come back to haunt me as I now fi nd myself embroidering over water colored backgrounds. The combination of the softness of water color washes with the texture of thread continually surprises me and allows me to explore themes without getting bored.”

On Tuesday, September 8, the CCPA and KRVM welcome The Honey Brothers and Vieux Farka Touré.

The Honey Brothers were conceived back in 2001 in the wake of 9/11.

“The band began as a way to fi nd joy in life,” says Ari Gold, who, with his college friends Andrew Vladeck and DS Posner, formed the group’s original nucleus.

“We rekindled our spirits with ukuleles,” recalls Andrew. “We’d get together and make dinner, drink booze and learn old folk songs. Then we’d wander outside and sing for people on street corners.”

That familial, communal vibe was cemented even further when Adrian Grenier joined shortly after the band’s fi rst public gig in 2002, followed by Ari’s twin brother Ethan Gold in September 2005.

“We have solidifi ed as real brothers,” Adrian says. “At fi rst it was sort of a symbolic thing, but now I think our DNA has merged on a molecular level.”

The Honey B’s independently released 2006 album, Songs for Your Sister, garnered considerable acclaim. The Village Voice opined that Sister, “manages to reference the country-tinged sensitivity of the Silver Jews, the summery harmonies of the Beach Boys, and the zany weirdness of Ween.”

Recently, the guys have come up with such driving New Wave dance-rock gems as “City”, “Demonstration”, “Inches From Wrong” and “Won’t Last Long”, none of which would sound out of place on a late-’70s post-punk album.

“What I’ve noticed with our new songs is a feeling of searching for community,” Ari says. “I think the band coming together when we did, and the way we did, made us want to make music that helps us all live in the present.”

Adds Adrian, “people fi nd our show really uplifting. You’ll have a smile on your face by the end.”

The Honey Brothers new EP, Demonstration, is now available digitally! The band makes their WOW Hall debut fresh from Seattle’s Bumbershoot and recent performances at Wanderlust in Lake Tahoe, All Points West in Jersey City and the Osheaga Festival in Montreal.

“The secret to the band’s success — besides being entirely unconcerned about commercial viability — is that it knows how to write catchy tunes that are unabashedly indebted to pop-rock royalty while making them entirely their own,” writes Josh Baron in the June issue of Relix Magazine. “The new EP due this June… is the best example to date.”

Co-headlining and playing fi rst, Vieux Farka Touré is a fast rising Malian guitarist/singer/songwriter. The son of the legendary Ali Farka Touré, Vieux quickly stepped into his own spotlight after the release of his self-titled debut album in 2006.

Vieux Farka Touré has taken after his father’s musical greatness, in spite of the fact that Ali wanted him to pursue a career in the military. But Vieux realized he had the music within him, and his passion led him to become a student at the National Arts Institute in Bamako, taking up the guitar after studying percussion, and writing his own music. Within two years his abilities became recognized, and Ali himself asked famed kora player Toumani Diabaté to be his son’s professional mentor.

In 2005 Vieux and his friend and fellow student at the Conservatory, producer Eric Herman, began work on his solo debut that included recordings that are now considered the last performances of Ali Farka Touré before his passing. Since the release of that self-titled debut album, Vieux has shown his natural mastery of the stage and infectious, unique brand of “koroboro (black African, in his native dialect) rock” to crowds worldwide. This year Bonnaroo kicks off a U.S. tour in support of his highly anticipated second album on Six Degrees Records.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

Two of his closest collaborators are Dave Alvin (formerly of the Blasters), for whom Leisz produced and played on several records, and Frisell, with whom he tours regularly. Leisz has also worked extensively with Matthew Sweet.

Pete Thomas is best known as the longtime drummer for Elvis Costello. Beginning in 1977 with The Attractions, Thomas and Costello spent the next decade touring the world and recording nine albums. Although Costello split with The Attractions between 1987 and 1993, he continued to work with Thomas on albums and he was a member of Costello’s 1989-1991 touring band, The Rude 5.

In 2001 Costello recruited Thomas, Davey Faragher and fellow Attraction Steve Nieve to become Elvis Costello & The

Imposters. Pete was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Elvis Costello & The Attractions in 2003. His many other credits include drums for Graham Parker’s 1991 album Struck By Lightning and 1992 album Burning Questions.

In 1994, Thomas was part of a trio that included vocalist/avant garde opera diva, Diamanda Galás, and former Led Zeppelin bassist/multi-instrumentalist Jones, who recorded the album, The Sporting Life. He also played on the Elliott Smith album, Figure 8.

Davey Faragher was a founding member of the band Cracker. In the mid to late-1970s, Faragher recorded three albums with his brothers Danny, Jimmy and Tommy as The Faragher Brothers. From there he became one of Los Angeles’ most sought after bass

players. He was in John Hiatt’s band from the mid to late ‘90s.

Faragher has recorded with The Monkees (on their 1986 reunion album Pool It!), David Crosby, John Phillips, Wanda Jackson, Dusty Springfi eld, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Susanna Hoffs, Vonda Shepard, Joan Osborne, Camper Van Beethoven, Allen Toussaint, Buddy Guy and The Ditty Bops.

On Thursday, September 10, KRVM welcomes Poor Man’s Whiskey performing a bluegrass rendition of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon to a laser light show.

Emerging from the San Francisco Bay Area music scene, Poor Man’s Whiskey has developed a sound that is eclectic and engaging. They call it, “High Octane Hootenanny” music. This quintet has been winning over national audiences with their upbeat performances, zany stage antics and infectious songs. While seamlessly integrating acoustic and electric instruments, the band weaves tales of everyday life while inviting the audience to become a part of each show.

The members of PMW — Jason Beard (guitar, mandolin), Josh Brough (banjo, keyboards), Eli Jebidiah (guitar, banjo, mandolin, thermin), George Smeltz (drums) and Aspen Stevenson (bass) — have released two studio albums, Train to California (2003) and Roadside Attraction (2005). This year they came out with a third: Dark Side of the Moonshine (a double disk set featuring original music as well as the bluegrass interpretation of the classic Pink Floyd album).

“In their own quiet way,” notes author Joseph C. Barbarie, “PMW outdoes the Pink Floyd model. Whereas in the original Dark Side, a sense of continuity

is provided by conceptual links in the lyrical subject matter and spacey, echo-y sound effect, PMW achieves exactly the same end with a much simpler means; Josh Brough’s steadily rolling banjo. In every song, there it is; brilliant and sunny in the opening “Breathe”, simmering and bubbling just beneath the surface of “Time”, or plangent and soaring (and funky, as well) for “Any Colour”. Eventually, the banjo emerges as a real musical personality (almost like a Straussian or Wagnerian heldentenor taking center-stage) in the band’s re-imagined version of “Money”, titled “Whiskey”. The brooding, sinister clawhammer lick is perfectly in keeping with the images of shotguns, hell hounds and

whiskey stills of the revamped lyric.”

The band’s most notable festivals appearances and shows include the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, 4 Peaks Music Festival, The Fillmore, SF Harmony Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, The Great American Music Hall, Las Tortugas and the fi nals of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

Author Frederick Moe declares, “If Dark Side of the Moonshine was playing on your local radio station, people would be tuned in, turned on, reveling and rejoicing. Both discs in this two cd set are masterful and a joy to discover.”

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

Dark Side of the Moonshine

On Friday, October 2, KRVM welcomes Toubab Krewe back to the WOW Hall.

Blending American and West African infl uences into a sound all its own, Toubab Krewe has set “a new standard for fusion of rock ‘n’ roll and West African music,” states Afropop Worldwide. Since forming in 2005, the magnetic instrumental quintet has won a diverse and devoted following at performances everywhere from Bonnaroo to the legendary Festival of the Desert in Essakane, Mali, the most remote festival in the world.

Toubab Krewe developed their unique sound over the course of numerous extended trips to Mali, Guinea, and Ivory Coast, where they immersed themselves in the local culture and studied and performed with luminaries. But the group has its roots in Asheville, NC, where many of its members were childhood friends and long-term musical collaborators. It was home in the Appalachians where the band recorded their sophomore album, Live at the Orange Peel. Produced by Grammy winning producer Steven Heller (who also produced the band’s debut), the new album captures their outstanding 2008 New Year’s run.

All of the songs are previously unreleased and continue to mix American rock with the West African musical traditions the band fell in love with on their travels. Along the way, they explore the worlds of surf and zydeco, fusing it all together into what the Village Voice describes as, “a futuristic, psychedelic, neo-griot frenzy,” and Honest Tune hails as “one of the most innovative voices in music today.”

Toubab Krewe is Teal Brown (drumset ), Drew Heller (electric guitar, soku), Justin Perkins (kamel ngoni, kora, electric guitar ), David Pransky (electric bass) and Luke Quaranta (percussion). The new release features collaborations with legendary spoken word artist Umar Bin Hassan of The Last Poets and fi ddler Rayna Gellert of Uncle Earl.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Saturday, September 12, Lost in the Woods Productions presents Hyding Jekyll, Broken Cell, Face of Order and Tullis.

This is the fi rst Lost in the Woods Productions show. We hope this is the beginning of a series of low cost/high quality shows that will allow the middle forms of music to be represented. Not metal, not indie but right in the middle. This group of bands represents a sound derived from the local psychedelic rock/metal scene that has always been here but many times is hidden below the roar of the local metal scene and other forms of music indigenous to the area.

Eugene’s Hyding Jekyll currently consists of Greg G. and Justin S. The band formed in April of 2008 and plays groove oriented music infused with heavy metal/hard rock. This duality of ideals produces a melodic, groove-based, progressive rock sound they have affectionately dubbed “Aggressive Progressive”. Whether the music is heavy or mellow, both sides of “Hyding Jekyll” are represented.

Broken Cell is four musicians who play and write from their hearts. Each member of the band contributes something different and gives 100%. They hope their powerful lyrics, melodic

riffs and a groovy rhythm section will create something new that fans of every genre will enjoy. Broken Cell has recorded an EP with Central Node Productions titled Tsunami.

Face of Order is from two defunct local bands, Sunday Straight Jacket and Javelina. Their sound comes from four guys who grew up on metal, grunge and prog-rock, but can still appreciate their parents’ music, too. Weaving between funky and spaced-out to intensely aggressive, with all the fl avors in-between, they bring a unique sound to the local scene. The band is comprised of Uriah (Screaming Chief), Jeremy (Axemaster), Tom (Headbeater) and Luke (Chordthumper).

Tickets are just $5 in advance, $7 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

On Monday, September 14, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes back The World/Inferno Friendship Society featuring Brian V. of Dresden Dolls.

New York’s own soul-punk orchestra, the World/Inferno Friendship Society, is blazing down the West Coast this September to perform their red-eyed show tunes to the swarming punk-rock masses. Fresh off the sold-out New York premiere of their vignette-laden new musical Addicted to Bad Ideas: Peter Lorre’s 20th Century, the band is arriving with plenty of gusto and a new drummer: Brian Viglione of Boston cabaret-punk heroes The Dresden Dolls.

Says Brian, “Swing dance, slam dance, sing your heart out, and waltz with a stranger out into the street after the show – that’s the kind of fun we have. People looking for the real deal, a band that plays with more heart than you can imagine and leaves you sweaty and grinning ear-to-ear, need to see this band live and join in.”

At eight pieces – wailing drums, three horns, two guitars, way too many teeth, a piano, and a singer soaked with wit, charisma, and humor – their songs so sweet and quicksilver promise to put you smack in the middle of the vaudeville circus you’ve always wished your life could be. The band’s tight musicianship and penchant for brewing up high-energy dance numbers are rooted in punk, but manifest themselves with fl ashes of Count Basie, Wilson Pickett, The Pogues and Little Richard all out on a night-long bender.

If you through it got hot this summer, wait until The World/Inferno comes to town! Full-time fi ghting friends to the friendless, the most successful scourge to the oppressors since Willie Sutton, they’re riding a wave of sumptuous red wine straight into your hearts. Even if they have to buy the drinks themselves, they’ll do it.

Come see the circus play the WOW Hall, one night only! Come and waltz with the one you love.

“It’s Halloween, it’s 1933, we’re all in Blade Runner, and the drinks are on the house. You have no excuse not to come out unless it is that you are a jerk. I don’t think you’re a jerk, I’ll see you there...”

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

Portugal. The Man returns to the WOW Hall on Friday, September 18, with special guests Drug Rug and Bazil Rathbone.

An experimental/alt-indie-band from Bristol Palin’s hometown — Wasilla, Alaska — Portugal. The Man is touring North America in support of a brand-new album, their fourth, The Satanic Satanist (produced by Paul Q. Kolderie/Radiohead, the Pixies) which hit stores July 21.

Portugal. The Man — guitarist/vocalist John Baldwin Gourley, bassist/singer Zachary Scott Carothers, keyboardist/singer Ryan Neighbors and drummer Jason Sechrist — will perform some 40 shows in North America between August and October, culminating on October 23 in New York at the CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival. The band will incorporate a number of the new songs into their set, and, according to Gourley, “There may be a little less jamming than we’ve done before, but there will be some new takes on some of the older songs.”

While P.TM has received absolutely glowing press notices over the years (“one of the truly great bands of this generation”/Alternative Press; “arguably the most noteworthy band in the world of music today”/Outburn), their recent Bonnaroo set ignited a whole

new awareness of the band. The Wall Street Journal’s Jim Fusilli raved that P.TM played, “the best set I heard last night, and my very early contender for the best set of the festival,” and Entertainment Weekly’s Whitney Pastonek commented that P.TM’s Bonnaroo performance was, “my favorite new discovery of the day...”

In its fi rst week of release, The Satanic Satanist was the #1 Most Added at College Radio. Plus, during its premiere week on MySpace, The Satanic Satanist logged 50-70,000 plays A DAY, and is now closing on 7-million total plays. If that isn’t enough, journalists have compared the band’s wildly eclectic music to artists like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Mars Volta, Jeff Buckley and the Beatles.

The Satanic Satanist is not about the worship of Satan, but instead is an 11-track, densely-layered blend of indie rock/Motown/soul/prog-ish synths/70s classic rock’n’roll serving as a bed to a very personal look at the childhood experiences of front man John Baldwin Gourley, who grew up in the wilds of the Alaskan frontier.

An album chockfull of standouts, The Satanic Satanist’s lead-off track, “People Say”, fi nds Gourley speaking out against the human cost of war, while “Lovers in Love” sees the

band working the groove like Isaac Hayes or Curtis Mayfi eld in their blaxploitation days.

And then there’s the packaging for The Satanic Satanist, a true throw-back to the innovative album packaging of the 60s and 70s. The package features Gourley’s trademark surreal, psychedelic-era drawings, and folds out, Origami-like, into different shapes and sizes.

Drug Rug’s Thomas Allen and Sarah Cronin met in 2006 and spent their fi rst date drinking whiskey in bed and playing each other songs on an old guitar. Their S/T debut record melted hearts and ears, and earned them rave reviews and comparisons to some of rock’s greatest duos.

Paint the Fence Invisible is certain to keep these trends going. While running the stylistic gamut, from the country duets of Ken and Dolly to the Pet Sound’s harmonies of Brian Wilson, Drug Rug still stays true to their rock n’ roll roots including The Velvet Underground and The Byrds.

Eugene’s Bazil Rathbone plays highly energetic, danceable music that fuses together many distinct genres, including anything from experimental progressive rock, to live electronic music, resulting in an unforgettable instrumental experience.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8:30 and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Sunday, September 20, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes Ninjasonik along with special guest Totally Michael.

A long time ago in a city very far, far away (New York City), Ninjasonik began as a musical collaboration by artists Reverend McFly (MC and DJ - a.k.a. Jah Jah Brown) and Teenwolf (Producer and DJ - a.k.a. k.ross). The federation was later fortifi ed by the addition of Telli “Bathroom Sexxx” Federline on the motormouth. Jah-Jah’s the punk, Teenwolf’s the DJ, Telli’s the rapper, completing a triangle of varied backgrounds that combine to coin a totally newfangled club punk rap sound.

In summer 2008 Ninjasonik released their fi rst EP, The Tight Pants EP, based around the seminal “Tight Pants” song and video, which spurned the initial online fascination with Ninjasonik. The already storied energy of their live dancefl oor/comedy roast/punk rock shows earned them a Spankrock-selected spot on the Rock The Bells tour opening for acts like Afrika Bambataa, DJ Blaqstarr, Murs and B.O.B.

Ninjasonik walks a fi ne line between styles. They regularly

cover acts like Bad Brains and Minor Threat and have also remixed their favorite bands like The Death Set, Vivian Girls, Matt & Kim, and Team Robespierre. Ninjasonik are the future — rhythms and synths so fi lthy they make songs about pregnancy, AIDS and tight pants seem like odes to the dancefl oor and the company of friends.

“Their shows are crazy,” states Johnny Siera (The Death Set), “like if Jabba’s palace was between B-more and Brooklyn, and Han Solo was in new sneakers crowd-surfi ng

with a fl ipped-up Suicidal Tendencies cap.”In collaboration with Brooklyn-based clothiers and

partners-in-style Mishka NYC, Ninjasonik is proud to unleash their latest recording, Darth Baño, as a free download and on CD. Titled after Telli’s Sith lord alter-ego, Darth Baño brings together an all-star cast of guests, including Spank Rock, Theophilus London, The Death Set, Blaqstarr, Hollywood Holt, Johnny Nelson, Zakee Kuduro, and many more. Darth Baño highlights not only the vocal-lyrical brilliance of TelliGramz, but also silences anybody who thinks Ninajsonik’s only got songs about tight jeans and the internet.

“Totally Michael melds electronic sequences with pop-punk sensibilities,” says Alternative Press, “on the ridiculously over-the-top club-punk jam ‘Casual Satisfaction’ he taps into the energy and carefree humor that make his live performance notorious across the country.”

TM has toured with Matt & Kim, Japanther, MC Chris (performing at the WOW Hall last October), The Death Set, Ninjasonik, Monotonix, The Pharmacy, Team Robespierre, Prizzy Prizzy Please and more.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

On Saturday, September 19, the CCPA and KRVM welcome Mayer Hawthorne’s Lonely Hearts Club Tour featuring Mayer Hawthorne & the County with special guests James Pants, Buff1 and Eugene’s own Animal Farm.

Mayer Hawthorne is touring in support of his debut album, A Strange Arrangement, which is being released September 8 on Stones Throw Records. Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided.

“Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” claims the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, who counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry and Barry White among his infl uences, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfi eld and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland and Eddie Holland Jr.

The “retro” tag is added to almost any contemporary work that sounds like it was originally recorded between 1966 and 1974, and Hawthorne, among the newest contributors to the genre, is aware of how trends come and go. After being introduced to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf by mutual friend Noelle Scaggs of the Rebirth, even his current boss was skeptical.

“He showed me two songs and I didn’t understand what I was listening to,” Wolf recalls. “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.”

And after meeting in person, it was even harder for Wolf to believe that Hawthorne was also the lead vocalist. Few expect such heartfelt sentiment to come from a 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor, but he has caught the ear of his family at Stones Throw, as well as BBC Radio 1 host Gilles Peterson and producer/DJ Mark Ronson. Expectations are high for the admitted vinyl junkie who never planned on taking his crooning public. Hawthorne’s hanging-by-a-string falsetto and breakbeat production on his fi rst recorded effort, the tender “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” are simultaneously Smokey and J Dilla – equal parts “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Fall in Love”.

“It’s soul,” he explains, “But it’s new.” Hawthorne has produced and played instruments

for much of his life, but never intended to become a singer. He isn’t formally trained, and never sang in the church choir or in any of the bands he was in before founding the County (formerly the County Commissioners). But here he is, new school soul sensation, who has taken the Motown assembly-line production model and eliminated nearly every element but himself and a few hired hands.

“I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs,” says Peanut Butter Wolf. “Sometimes, you

just know it’s the right thing to do.” And for those willing to believe anything is

possible, be grateful to have Mayer Hawthorne on the scene. It’s not just throwback music anymore – this revival is all about progression.

Stones Throw recording artist James Pants was signed to the roster and championed as the ‘next big thing’ by none other than head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf himself. He’s been lauded by Busy P, Urb, XLR8R and Dazed & Confused Magazines.

Mr. Pants is a purveyor par excellence of that unmistakable “fresh beat”: 80’s Soul, Electro Boogie, Early Rap, New Wave and Post-Punk Disco, all of which can be found on his album Welcome — where James plays drums, keys, guitar and sings.

From a radio perspective, what format does this fall under — this new style that Pants has invented? Do you play it on the groove alongside the likes of Skyy, Cameo, or even Pharrell? Or do you play it in the underground alongside the up-to-the-minute electro pulse of Egyptian Lover, Cybotron and even Too $hort? The answer, of course, is both! There’s enough Pants to fi t any style.

Seasoned mic veteran Buff1 approaches his sophomore solo album, There’s Only One, with a classic debut behind him, successful National and European tours under his belt, and deafening buzz from the blog-o-sphere. Whether rocking a party anthem, a political burner or a soulful banger, one thing is certain - Buff1 consistently delivers.

Ten years after Athletic Mic League (AML) came together as teenagers, the crew has shared the stage with Eminem, Mos Def, De La Soul, Slum Village, Jurassic 5, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Little Brother and Ghostface Killah to name a few. Following the underground success of their release Jungle Gym Jungle in 2005 on Barak Records (Slum Village), the remaining six members approached Buff with a new plan: it was time to bring him to the forefront as a solo artist.

In 2007, Buff1 offi cially became a solo act with the release of his critically acclaimed debut Pure. Real Detroit Weekly crowned Buff1 the “Best Solo Rap Artist of 2007.” Okayplayer gave Pure 4.5/5 afros, exclaiming, “This album, my friends, is incredible... classic like thriller jackets”. Listeners should expect nothing less from There’s Only One.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Fiday, September 26, the WOW Hall hosts Garden Aid! — a benefi t concert celebrating local nonprofi ts growing food, growing youth and growing community.

Three bands pair with three nonprofi ts for an evening of music for a cause. The bands: Opal Creek, Bad Mitten Orchestre, Green Mountain Bluegrass Band. The benefi ciaries: Laurel Valley Educational Farm, The School Garden Project, Food for Lane County Gardens Program.

Laurel Valley is a two acre organic farm on the campus of the Northwest Youth Corps that serves as the basis for sustainable natural resource education for youth participating in Northwest Youth Corps programs. The School Garden Project helps schools create and sustain gardens where hands-on learning connects students with their environment and local food system. The FOOD for Lane County Gardens Program provides a multifaceted approach to reduce hunger and fulfi ll the basic need for nutritious food in our community through a unique combination of services at three sites: the Churchill Community Garden, Grassroots Garden and the Youth Farm. These three organizations share a common goal of empowering youth by providing them with the skills to grow food!

Opal Creek is an all woman, fi ve piece bluegrass band that formed in the summer of 2008 after jamming together at a bluegrass festival in Fossil, Oregon. By the end of the weekend, they discovered that they not only shared a love for playing bluegrass music, but also for chatting, drinking tea, raising chickens and eating brownies.

The girls delight audiences with their bedazzling talents and solid, lively playing. Opal Creek can be heard playing traditional bluegrass and unusual takes on old favorites.

The Bad Mitten Orchestre has risen quickly in the underground folk scene and their impassioned lyrics, eclectic instrumentation and quirky disposition have earned them adoration from audience members young and old. They plan to eventually travel the world, sharing laughter and good humor everywhere they go. Their show is an irreverent, lyrical folkgrass cabaret, brimming with rich vocal harmonies, exciting instrumentation and soul.

Formed in 2006, the Green Mountain Bluegrass Band is a combination of some familiar faces in the Northwest’s music scene. Although a fairly new confi guration, the members of the band have played bluegrass together for over a decade. A band formed of friendships and forged musical journeys, it’s no mystery why these guys are having so much fun performing on stage. Seasoned veterans, champion pickers, and experienced showmen, the Green Mountain Bluegrass Band offers audiences tight vocal harmonies, rock-solid instrumentals, and a musical dynamism which coalesces into a signature “high lonesome sound”, the quality of which is rarely found in a regional band.

Green Mountain Bluegrass is Dennis Berck, Mike Bray, Gary Dunbar, Chuck Holloway and Tyler Lynn.

Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 7:30. Suggested donation is from $10 to $25 at the door. ★

On Sunday, September 13, Ragz 2 Muffi nz presents Richie Spice along with special guests Spanner Banner and Eugene’s ow Medium Troy.

Most reggae fans became acquainted with Richie Spice in 2004 when his single “Earth A Run Red” began its ascent on the charts, fi rst in Jamaica, then internationally, ultimately emerging as one of the year’s biggest hits. “Earth A Run Red” was originally featured on Spice’s debut album Universal, released by Heartbeat Records in 2000.

In early 2004 Spice signed with 5th Element, a Kingston based management company/record label and they began a vigorous promotional campaign for “Earth A Run Red” in Jamaica which resulted in the song’s steady rotation on the airwaves and in the dancehalls. A subsequent video (directed by Ras Kassa) brought even greater visibility to Spice’s career and it wasn’t long before he became one of the island’s most sought after artists.

Additional hit tunes — including the ominous “Folly Living (Blood Again)”, the haunting “Ghetto Girl” and the resounding hymn to herb “Marijuana” — were featured on Spice’s debut album for 5th Element Records, Spice In Your Life. The New York Times named Spice In Your Lifeone the best reggae releases of 2004; the Los Angeles Timesbroadened the accolades, citing it as one of the year’s ten best albums of any musical genre; and in Jamaica, The Observernewspaper honored Spice as artist and vocalist of the year.

Spice’s career has continued to soar as a result of his enthralling live performances (Billboard Magazine ranked him among the top six performers at Reggae Sunsplash 2006) and a succession of hits on the reggae charts.

5th Element joined forces with VP Records to cooperatively release Spice’s next album, In The Streets to Africa, in 2007.

Spice’s appealing brand of roots reggae is characterized by smoothly crooned, impassioned vocals that lovingly caress or, just as convincingly, deliver the militancy of a righteous rebel warrior or the aura of ancestral mysticism. Guided by the principles of his Rastafarian way of life, Spice’s lyrics rail against injustices and the plight of the oppressed, implore assistance for

the youth and extend maximum respect to the ladies.

“My responsibility is to use the talent that God gave me as an instrument to uplift people who are facing the struggle worldwide and let them feel happy in themselves,” Spice explains. “It is all about righteousness, and endorsing the love of the people, good over evil and life over death.”

Born Richell Bonner in the Kingston suburb of St. Andrew, Richie Spice hails from a musical family that includes his older brother Pliers (from the deejay/singer duo Chaka Demus and Pliers of “Murder She Wrote” fame) and singer Spanner Banner (best known for his mid-90s hit “Life Goes On”).

Spanner Banner is the stage name of reggae recording artist and songwriter Joseph Anthony Bonner. The Jamaican-born performer is one of four siblings who headed into the music business. Island Jamaica offered Banner a recording contract in 1993 and the following year he put out Now & Forever, followed by Chill two years later.

These releases spawned several successful singles, among them “Universal Love”, “Cheater”, “What We Need Is Love”, “Michelle” and “You Gotta Be”.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★
