The role of the keyboardist in worship Weve come a long way from when the piano
and organ were the only instruments in the wor-
ship setting. Todays worship teams use key-
boards, guitars, drums and other percussion, as
well as a variety of brass and woodwinds.
The keyboard is still the main instrument in many
of our churches today. The worship leader, wor-
ship team, other musicians and congregation rely
on the keyboardist to:
Establish the tempo and solid rhythm of the
song
Help the worship experience flow as
smoothly as possible
Support the worship leader and team in a
manner that makes their jobs easier
Lets talk about these in more detail.
Establish tempo and rhythm. Its important to
follow a metronome setting for each song. Decide
on a tempo for each song and write it on your
music so youll have it the next time you do the
song. This ensures that you dont start out too
fast (or too slow) and that you keep it in the
pocket throughout the song. The drummer (or
other musician) should count it off to start the
intro. Keep a solid and steady rhythm going
throughout the song for continuity.
Help worship flow smoothly. We must reme
ber that worship is about ushering in the ve
presence of the Holy Spirit. We want the peop
to be able to forget about everything else a
focus solely on God. The keyboard cannot be
distraction, not even in a good way. Think abo
it if the keyboardist is busy trying to play fan
and impress people with his skill, hes a DITRACTION to the worship experience. As ha
as this might be for you to hear, its NOT abo
YOU. Our most important job as worship ke
boardists is to make it easy for people to follo
the music so they can WORSHIP.
Support the worship leader and team. Our j
as keyboardists must be to make the worsh
leaders and teams jobs as easy as possible.
we follow the leaders signals and strive to ma
worship flow as seamlessly as possible, well
easy to sing with and the focus will be on Jesu
And isnt He what worship is all about?
Dana Martin serves as the keyboardist at True L
Church in Lexington, KY. Shes also a worship ke
coach; she helps frustrated worship keyboardists tran
form their playing to flow seamlessly in worship even
they never thought they could learn to improvise. S

Worship leader,are you worshiping?
By Mason Jessie
When I got saved I knew
my calling was to be a
worship leader. I remem-
ber the Holy Spirit mov-ing in the services, and
the music was pure and
honest. I loved that.
When I was called into
the ministry of leading
worship I was so excited
and felt like I couldnt
wait. I thought I knew
how to set the stage for a
great worship service
with all the right songs
and chords. I had devel-
oped the concept that the
music during worship had
to be perfect for people
to be uplifted.
Over the next couple of
months I realized that
something was missing. I
was praying, reading my
Bible, and working on

I knew something had to
give, and I began to real-

had to give or, rather,
give in. I was so caught

Why do worship leaders,
pastors, missionaries,
vocalists, musicians and
techs come to the wor-
ship conference? Here
are a few reasons weve
heard over the years:
To connect with other
w o r s h i p l e a d e r s
(musicians, techs, etc.)
To find resources for
new music
To get rejuvenated and
receive fresh ideas for
my worship ministry
To hear a nationally-
known speaker
To worship in a setting
with others who love to
worship
To have my most burn-
ing questions answered
that would help me with
my worship ministry
To learn creative ways
to build relationships
with my worship minis-
try team

Q: Why use in-ear monitors?
By TJ Thorn
A: Simply said, an in-ear monitor allows the user tohave control over what they hear, with more clarity
and less stage volume. With a good in-ear
mix there's no reason for the musician to
over play or the vocalist to strain to pro-
ect above the ambient sound level. You
see with traditional floor monitors there's
opportunity for competition between moni-
ors due to sound spill. And, if the instru-
ments are not run direct to the sound board, there
can even be competition between instrument
amplifiers and floor monitors! In-ear systems are
an effective means of delivering sound to the
musician/vocalist without adding to the overall
volume of the sanctuary.
TJ Thorn is a Drummer-Educator-Clinician and Wor-
ship Leader at Trinity Assembly of God in George-
