LEADER BIBLE STUDY

Three important references to people

are made in Matthew 2:1. What are the

names of the three people or groups?

Jesus, the “Bread of Life,” was born

in Bethlehem, which translated means

“house of bread.” Matthew introduces

Jesus as the king come into the world.

Herod, later known as Herod the Great,

was the first governor of Galilee. He was

elected “King of the Jews” by the Roman

senate around 40 B.C. He was cruel,

mean, vengeful, and jealous.

The wise men were magi, or

astrologers, from the east. The wise

men saw a star in the east and desired

to worship the new King of the Jews. Do

you desire to worship Christ? Think of the

ways that Jesus is king in your life.

Matthew 2:3 states the condition of

Herod when he heard the news of the

newborn king. What was his condition?

King Herod gathered the political

and spiritual leaders together to inquire

diligently about the birth of the baby

king. What leaders were called in verse 4?

To what biblical reference did the leaders

refer in an effort to assist King Herod in

understanding Jesus’ birth?

Read Matthew 2:6-8. What did King

Herod ask the wise men to do? Read

verse 8 again. Herod said he wanted to

come and worship Jesus. In actuality,

Herod only wanted to know the who,

what, where, and why of Jesus because

his political jealousy generated a

meanness of “kill all enemies.”

The wise men followed the star and

went to see Jesus. Read verses 9-10. What

was the initial reaction when they saw

Jesus?

The word worship means to “fall down

in reverence.” There is joy in worshiping

Jesus.

Worship invites you to look at Jesus

with joy, to fall at His feet in humility and

reverence, and to open your life to Jesus

just as the wise men opened their gifts.

Worship is a whole-hearted response

to Christ in His glory. The wise men

brought practical, traditional gifts—gold,

frankincense, and myrrh, often used in

the Persian royal court and as a way to

honor someone special, as their form of

worship.

BIBLE STORY

Wise Men Visited Jesus —Matthew 2:1-12

Wise men from the east saw a star that

appeared in the sky. They knew that the

star meant a king had been born. They

also knew that God had promised to send

the Savior to the Jews.

The wise men followed the star until they

arrived in Jerusalem. There they asked,

“Where is the One who has been born

King of the Jews? We followed His star

from the east and have come to worship

Him.”

King Herod heard about all of this and was deeply disturbed. He called all the chief

priests and scribes together and asked them where the Savior would be born. They

told him that the prophet Micah had said that the Savior would be born in Bethlehem.

So Herod called the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared. He

then sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. When

you find Him, report back to me so that I, too, can go and worship Him.”

The wise men followed the star to Bethlehem to the house where Jesus and His

parents were staying. They went into the house and saw Jesus with His mother, and

they fell to their knees and worshiped Him. Then they presented Him with gifts of gold,

frankincense, and myrrh.

The wise men were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they returned to

their own country by another route.

►Who was king when Jesus was born in Bethlehem? (Herod, Matthew 2:1.)

►What question were the wise men asking when they arrived in Jerusalem? (Where is the newborn King of the Jews? Matthew 2:2.)

►Who knew the answer to the wise men’s question? (Chief priests and scribes, Matthew 2:4-5.)

►How did the Chief priests and scribes know where the King of the Jews could be found? (Micah’s prophecy, Matthew 2:6.)

►How did the wise men know where in Bethlehem to look for the newborn king? (The star was over the house, Matthew 2:9.)

►What was the first thing the wise men did when they saw Jesus? (They fell to their knees and worshiped Him, Matthew 2:11.)

Grades 4-6PRACTICE BIBLE SKILLS

• Lead children to find Matthew 2:1-12 in their Bibles.

• Explain that boys and girls will make a chart identifying the setting and the people

involved in today’s Bible story.

• Guide children to scan through the verses to find the names and places

mentioned.

• Each child will print a name or place on a star as he finds it in the passage.

• Distribute a large sheet of paper, markers, and glue.

• The children will think of a title and across the top of the sheet of paper a child will

print the title.

• Underneath the title one child should print the Scripture reference.

• They will then decide how to glue the names and places on the paper. For

example, they may want to glue all the names in one section and all the places

in another. They may want to organize the names and places by verses or in the

order they appear in the passage.

• They will glue the stars on the sheet of paper.

• Instruct the children not to repeat names and places.

• Children will attempt to guess what the response is and which of the people the

response matches.

• The child who guesses correctly may act out the next response.

• Play the game until each child has an opportunity to act out a response or as long

Jesus

Herod was king of Judea when Jesus was born in

Bethlehem. King Herod was a jealous and angry

man.

Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. They

were looking for the One who was born King of

the Jews. King Herod was upset by this news. He

asked all of his advisors where the Messiah was

supposed to be born. The advisors stated that the

prophet Micah said the Messiah would be born in

Bethlehem.

Herod asked the wise men to go and find this

newborn king. Herod told the men to come back

and tell him where the child could be found so he

could worship the new king, too.

The wise men left Herod and followed the star to the place where Jesus was. They were filled with joy. They entered

the house and saw Jesus with his mother, Mary. They worshiped Jesus and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and

myrrh.

In a dream, God warned the wise men not to go back to Herod. They went back to their own country a different way.
