Our culture defines the church according to a building or the hour of 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning, but what if you could find a community of people who believed church was a catalyst for change? What if Church was more about working together to make a difference in our community rather than just meeting together for an hour a week?

As a congregation we value Christ-centered love lived out in acceptance, hospitality, community, discipleship and service. We long for everyone to experience the Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors of God’s Church. If you’re a St. Luke’s member or attend regularly we hope you’ll “Simply Invite” your friends to join you for worship and experience who we are as a Church for themselves. If you don’t have a place to grow spiritually, ask questions about God or connect with others, we hope you’ll come back and join us as well. This Worship Guide will provide you with many opportunities to connect with our diverse ministries. We invite you to get involved!

To assist parents and restless babies during worship, we have a glass-enclosed room in the back of the Sanctuary and the gym lobby area available. We also offer a free nursery in Building A for babies who are at least six weeks old.

After worship, please stop by the Service Station in Building C to receive a Welcome Gift and let us answer your questions.

STAGE ACTING: Students (Grades 3-8) interested in acting will work on acting technique, monologues, scene work and audition skills Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. No experience required.

TEEN JAZZ: Students (Grades 6-12) are invited to learn dance in a fun, non-judgmental environment with instructor Gin Jans Smith Tuesdays from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. No previous experience required.

ADULT WRITING: Published author Elaine Person helps participants find their creativity and improve skills through different weekly exercises. Tuesday sessions from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. begin February 12.

PRIVATE VIOLIN LESSON: Linda Van Buren, an active career violinist and teacher in Central Florida, offers lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons are available.

CLUSTERS: Clusters are 20 or more people sharing a common interest, life stage or neighborhood. Groups gather once a month, creating a community where everyone is connected. Join us in the Welcome Hall TODAY or contact Pastor Jad at jdenmark@st.lukes.org to help you get started.

NEXGEN MINISTRIES CLUSTER: Ohana means family in Hawaiian, and is a new ministry on Sundays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for middle and high school students and their families. Participate in board games, video games and sports while listening to worship music from the student band in the Attic.

YOUNG ADULTS: This cluster meets on the first Tuesday of every month in the Attic in Building C. Email youngadults@st.lukes.org for more information.

THURSDAY THRIVE FOR ELEMENTARY CHILDREN: Join us for a unique program called SPROUTS that encourages spiritual growth through loving God and neighbor. NEXGEN MINISTRIES IS NOW OFFERING TUTORING: Join us Monday and Wednesday afternoons in the Attic from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Education is an important part of our culture and our students' upbringing. Sometimes our students are in need of extra help and we are here to help them with their schoolwork.

BIBLE STUDY WITH PASTOR BILL: On Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Building B Room 209 join Pastor Bill for a deeper look into the scripture for next week’s sermon.

SPECIAL LENTEN STUDY SMALL GROUP ON “TOXIC CHARITY”: Prepare for our focus in April and May by reading and discussing the Bob Lupton book, “Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help and How to Reverse It.” Bob will be a featured guest for our Community Transformation Launch on April 27 and has 30 years of experience in grassroots community transformation. PASTORS’ BOOK CLUB 3: EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE: Throughout the Lenten season we will discuss growth through change with the series, “Grows: Seasons of the Soul.” Alongside this series, the pastors’ book club will offer a third book entitled, “Everything Must Change.” The author, Brian McLearen, says, “this book asks two essential questions: What are the world's top crises, and what do the life and message of Jesus say to those global crises?" Starting Thursday, February 21 please join Pastors Corey and Jad at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays for five weeks in Building C Room 205-207. Pick up a copy of the book from the front desk of the main office. Please come to the first session having read Part 1 (pages 1-40).

THE MCKEEFERY SEMINARY SCHOLARSHIP FUND: If you are considering a church related profession, apply for the McKeefery Seminary Scholarship Fund. The minimum scholarship award of $1,000 to each person approved by the award committee can be used to pay for tuition, fees and books and is paid directly to the Seminary. EVERYWHERE FUN FAIR (VBS 2013): Celebrate God's welcoming love for everyone at our Everywhere Fun Fair (VBS 2013), where God's world comes together. At this exciting child-friendly fair, your children will experience the love of Jesus, meet welcoming neighbors from the Bible and explore the everyday life of neighbors from Japan, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Mexico. Children will discover that God's love welcomes everyone as they learn to love and serve God and be a neighbor to the world. Children will attend exciting attractions such as interactive Bible storytelling, global games, rockin' music, super science, and more! Everywhere Fun Fair addresses and represents the whole spectrum of people in the human family--ages, races, abilities, and stages of development. Registration for VBS 2013 will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 4 for Servant Ministers who are making a commitment to serve at VBS. BECOME A ST. LUKER...TAKE THE FIRST STEPS

We want to make sure people really know who we are as St. Luke's and as United Methodists as well as how and why we worship, connect, grow and serve in the ways we do! We have developed an entirely new FIRST STEPS PROCESS to learn about Christianity, the Bible, United Methodism and St. Luke's.

Step 1: Attend a Welcome Gathering The next gathering will be held February 24, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Step 2: Attend Four Learn ClassesEach class is one month long. If you are new or returning to church we invite you to take all four classes. If you are transferring from another church where you have been active, we invite you to take the two classes on United Methodism and St. Luke's 101.

Step 3: Attend the Decide ClassThis one month class will be held four times a year and will be taught by St. Luke's Leadership. We will concentrate on the spiritual disciplines, how we read the Bible, stewardship and missions. At the end of this class you will have the opportunity to consider joining the church and becoming a member on one of our Membership Celebration Sundays.

ServeWithin Our Community

HABITAT CONSTRUCTION HAS BEGUN!: Our new house in Winter Garden for the Urguiga family is underway. The team is looking for volunteers to help out with the construction of the house. The site is located at 710 South Park Avenue. The next work day is to be determined.

CONSTRUCT-A-LUNCH FOR THE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY VOLUNTEERS: If you are handy in preparing meals, be sure and sign-up to bring lunches for the volunteers at the construction site located at 710 South Park Avenue by 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays. MEALS NEEDED FOR JOBS PARTNERSHIP: One of the best parts of the Jobs Partnership class is the shared meal between students and volunteers where relationships are formed. Small groups or families are needed to prepare meals (main dish, side dishes, bread, and dessert) for 50 people. Paper goods and drinks are provided. Meals must be delivered by 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at HD Supply and Thursdays at the Callahan Center February through April. Contact Sharon Briggs at sbriggs@st.lukes.org or 407.876.4991 ext *239.

COOK, BAKE AND SERVE-COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS: Volunteers are needed on February 16 to bake at St. Luke’s from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., cook at Coalition (those wishing to carpool meet at the Fellowship Hall at 12:00 p.m.) usually done by 5:30 p.m., or serve at Coalition from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is a chance to share time in service and possibly a recipe or two. POVERTY SIMULATION FEBRUARY 15: The Cost of Poverty Experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family in the U.S. trying to survive month to month. This is a great activity for those who want to do more than talk about the problem of poverty but want to be a part of the solution. This is part of our training for our family and neighborhood stabilization ministries and will be offered several times throughout the year. The simulation will be on Friday, February 15 in the Attic from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There is limited capacity so be sure to sign up with Sharon Briggs at sbriggs@st.lukes.org or 407.876.4991 ext. *239.

Q AND A FOR PROSPECTIVE FOSTER PARENTS FEB 17: Open Hearts, the Orange County foster care ministry of the Florida United Methodist Children's Home, is hosting an informational session for those who may be considering foster parenting on Sunday, February 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will be held at First UMC in Winter Garden located at 125 N. Lakeview Avenue. No need to RSVP.

SPRING INTO ACTION AS GOODWILL COORDINATOR: Our Goodwill Dignity Drive is looking for an enthusiastic person to help coordinate its clothing drive hosted by St. Luke’s. The coordinator will serve as liaison for volunteers, Goodwill Industries and St. Luke’s. CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES PROJECT BAGS: Children’s Ministries is beginning to gear up for our June Vacation Bible School ~ Everywhere Fun Fair~ Where God’s World Comes Together.
