Michael is looking to the goal, the end of the pool, the turning point, the finish line. That guy is looking at Michael. Both are swimming, but one is leading and the other is following. Both have their own race to win which is to me the biggest observation. Those lanes mean they both must finish, must swim their best, must win the race. But we all know in the Olympics only one gets the gold medal. So what is our takeaway here for Westwood UMC? Every church in our community is running a race, must run the race and run it to win. Win what? We all have or are supposed to have the same goal – doing, being all Jesus wants us to be and do. That is our gold medal. Each church must keep their eyes on the goal because when we step out of the pool of life as we know it, there is a new pool that is crystal clear with no chemicals to keep it looking pure. Every church has the choice to compare itself to other churches and fret and frown and feel around for a stroke to move ahead further. What every church, including us, must do is to be all we are. When Phelps is training and swimming in competition he is doing it for himself, to better himself. That guy is as well, but he forgot to keep his eyes on the goal. Churches not only have to consider this but you do as well. You have to decide if your eyes are on the goal that Christ has laid before you to be a believer and do things believers do, or are you going to watch someone else swimming in the pool of life that may or may not have the same goals as you? Do your words match your actions? Does your effort lead to the upward call of Jesus in your life? Does your work reflect your faith? Do you read other’s lives and books and watch movies critically from a Christian worldview or do you find yourself accepting more of the political worldview, economic worldview or politically correct worldview? Of course there are many questions we can ask ourselves about any goal we might have and there is value in having role models to observe, learn from and grow as a result of knowing of them. I have role models and I’m sure you do as well. But still the ultimate realization is that I have to finish my race too. My role models can’t and won’t run it, swim it, field it, or say it for me. One of the people not seen in this picture is Michael’s support – his mom, girlfriend and child, coach, team mates even the person who puts those suction cups on his body. Yet the picture speaks to us here as well – something “that guy” forgot – he isn’t on Michael’s support team. It is time to look to the goal, to do your best and not compare yourself to someone else.

WUMC Preschool begins the school year on September 6, 2016. The children will be hard at work

playing, learning and having fun! We welcome all of our new families and returning families for the

2016-2017 school year! This school year we have extended our day by 30 minutes and the Frog

and Bumblebee classes have added a day, making them 4 day classes. We are excited to continue

exploring new areas of growth and development for our awesome preschool!

The daily goal of our preschool staff will be to help children develop a positive approach to

learning by respecting children’s individuality and creating an environment that acknowledges

their emerging sense as doers and thinkers. Sarah Beach will continue to lead chapel time

with our preschoolers twice a month!

August has been quite a month for me, what with an excellent

Kids' Music Camp followed by a joyous and inspiring benefit

concert for our friends in Haiti as well as the annual preparations for our

choirs to return from their summer hiatus! It all makes me thankful for

the many people and their many gifts that are continually turned toward

the Lord in praise and worship. Every person who engages in speaking,

singing, hospitality, planning, and more in the name of Jesus Christ is an

instrument for God to bring His light and wisdom to all of us in a new way,

making our worship and our lives refreshed, richer, and more vibrant.

A HAND UP—NOT A HAND OUT!

Working the front office at the church I receive calls every day from people who have found themselves in a tight spot. I know we all can relate to the income verses outgoing in our bank accounts each week or month. These folks find that they are short of cash and in need of assistance, and it is hard to turn them away. The Missions Team came up with an idea and we, the staff, ran with it.

On Tuesdays when I arrive at work I am greeted by many of our neighbors waiting to work around the church. We have some who work outside weeding, trimming and cleaning up, as well as inside with light painting, cleaning, and helping with different tasks. These neighbors can work for 3 hours for minimum wage and they are paid cash at the end of their work time. Each person is allow to earn $160.00 each quarter so that is about $54.00 a month. We have been doing this program for about two months now and I am very encouraged with the results. They come to me after working with a sense of accomplishment and pride in a job well done, their shoulders are up, and they feel good about themselves. I have noticed that they are also becoming connected to the church and to the staff. We even have seen them volunteer after they have earned their maximum amount because they enjoy being here and want to see the job they started through to the end. This is not a hand out. Our neighbors work for the money. They don’t have to feel bad about asking but now feel empowered to make a difference in their situation.

I am able to pass along job opportunities I hear about because our goal is to help these people find a job that will provide the income they need. I am excited when I will hear stories about the doors that open for them. If you know of entry level jobs send me an email and I will pass it along.

This creative idea is a spark and my hope is that it will spread and grow in our community.

WHAT IF SELECTING CURRICULUM WAS EASY?

If you have been part of a small group for more than a couple of months and have worked through the process of selecting a new curriculum for your group to study, you know how frustrating and mysterious the process can be. Too often the local book store doesn’t carry the curriculum you want and then you have to order it based on the two sentences provided by the publisher in a magazine, or sometimes a great curriculum might have a dated cover that isn’t compelling. Then there is the hassle of collecting money from each member and so on. I have been part of groups that have taken over two sessions just to pick the next curriculum.

Well, in a world of Netflix, Hulu, Spotify and Pandora, the church is catching up and jumping on the streaming bandwagon. Streaming media is a proven model for distributing content and becoming the preferred mode of content delivery for people around the world.

Once inside the application, you will see a huge catalog of Christian curriculum, talks from a variety of conferences, children, youth and adult small group material and a lot more. This will be available to all small groups and individuals in our church in the coming months. Parents/Guardians will be able to sign in at home and have wholesome television for their kids!

Ultimately I had to ask myself, why shouldn’t picking a new curriculum be as easy as picking a TV show. I’ll admit, at first, this is what prevented me from sharing this resource with our church. I was worried that such casual selection of curriculum would lead us into a culture of consumerism vs. intentional discipleship. But after extended conversation with other churches that have used Right Now Media and working with their sales rep, I believe it can be done in a great way.

At the time of this writing, we have not released access to this resource to the whole congregation. There will be a trial period that leaders can assess the content and then we will move into a season of training to get everyone on the same page. But you can expect this to happen in the coming months.

I look forward to using this resource with my family and with my small group!

Worldwide, digital revenues from streaming subscription, downloads, and advertising revenue on sites such as YouTube – accounted for 45% of the total in 2015,compared with 39% for physical formats such as CDs and vinyl records.

-Report by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry

Right Now Media is the church’s response to this new world of content delivery. Right Now has partnered with dozens of publishers to catalog their material and has developed an application that can be run on any smart phone, iPad, your smart TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and just about any other way you connect to the internet on a daily basis.

What comes to mind when someone mentions “work”? Is your initial tendency to moan and

groan, wishing you could avoid work?

It might surprise you to learn that God described His creative acts as “work” and that He brought

“work” into being shortly after He created man. Adam worked in the Garden before and after

his fall due to sin. Cain worked by raising vegetables. Abel worked by tending sheep.

Throughout Scripture, people worked. Even the Lord Jesus worked while He was on earth,

and He described God the Father as having worked. Work has always been part of God’s

nature and eternal plan for mankind.

Wait a minute—If God created and owns everything, why should we His children have to work?

Couldn’t He just provide for us in some supernatural way that would enable us not to have to

work? Surely, God could do that, but He doesn’t do so. According to the admonition in

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12, on of the primary benefits from working and providing for our needs

is to be able to lead lives marked by integrity and a healthy self respect. And God’s plan is

that we are best able to accomplish these worthy goals by working.

God also knows that by utilizing our talents and abilities through work, He will be able to

minister to others through us in an effective way. Work, then, is one of the primary avenues

by which we can demonstrate our Christian faith, particularly as we do our tasks to God’s glory.

Work is also the primary way through which we obtain money to give to God.

What should be the Christian’s response to work? First, thank God for work and for the ability

to work. As Solomon observed, this is a “gift of God.” Second, view your work as a means of

bringing glory to God. Third, whatever you do—no matter what your vocation or occupation—

do it “with your might,” as unto the Lord. And finally, remember that by providing work for us

to do, God enables us to give Him to His ministry at Westwood United Methodist Church.

Grace Place By Carol Wright

The week of July 17th Westwood UMC had the opportunity to assist the IHN program by providing

dinner and evening hosting at Grace Place. Grace Place is located in College Hill and operated by CAIN

(Churches Active In Northside). The summer was a trial period to determine if this would be appropriate

as another IHN location, so that more families can be provided help each week. Those who assisted had

an enjoyable time with the very appreciative families that were there for the week. The use of Grace

Place is being evaluated with the hope of it becoming a regular part of the IHN program by next spring

or summer. More congregations are needed for this to be a success.

Thank you to all who were part of the service at Grace Place: Pam Chaney, Chris Hetz, Jane Hissett,

Jeff & Diane Jeffries, Chris McMullin, Marian Miller, Jack Moore, Tim & Jan Peter, Lee & Beth Strawhun,

Susan Thomas, and Eric & Kim Von Bargen.

We are starting a little early due to a September 13th deadline for pickup. Please place items in the baskets found around the church. Monetary donations are always welcome.

THE PRAYER CORNER By Beth Strawhun

THOUGHTS ON JOURNALING…..

When I was in 3rd grade, I begin writing in my first

diary. At that age, and in that era, keeping a

diary was a popular “thing to do”. I enjoyed

writing in one so much that I continued doing

so throughout junior and high school. Believe it

or not, I have kept all my diaries throughout my

childhood and young adulthood. Before my

mother passed away, I got my jr./sr. high versions out and read several passages to her.

We laughed so hard, our sides hurt! Most of the entries (I’m embarrassed to say) were

about boys I liked!

After I gave my heart to Christ half-way through college, I began a different type of

diary, a journal, more specifically a prayer journal. I started writing out my prayers and

pouring out my heart to God. That form of prayer, journaling conversations with God,

has continued throughout my life.

Again, I have kept all those journals and have loved rereading various entries throughout

my life to reflect on how God has carried me through trials and tribulations as well as joys

experienced in the lives of our biological and church families. These prayers have helped

me remember how I felt in circumstances such as suffering a miscarriage as well as those

Scriptures that comforted and strengthened

me. God used these recollections to minister

to other women who suffered the same

issue. Also, it is wonderful to go back and

see God’s faithfulness through many

answered prayers.

During our current Wednesday afternoon

Bible study, we are studying the Psalms. Lee

had mentioned to us that the Psalms are like

the writers’ own personal journals. So when I

read the Psalms now, I think about that and it

helps me write even with more emotion.

Next month, I would like to compile recent answers to prayer experiences with ways God

has answered personal prayers. So, if anyone would like to submit an answer to prayer for

this article, please email me within the next two weeks at: [email protected]

Lettuce Eat Well Farmers' Market is held inside year-round for your shopping comfort at Cheviot United Methodist Church 3820 Westwood Northern Blvd. 45211. The market is held in the church's Narthex, which is just inside the main entrance of the church. Please note that this location could vary depending

on other activities taking place at the church.

On MONDAY, OCTOBER 3, Pastor Lee will turn 60 years

young! Let’s surprise him with a mountain full of cards and/or

photos of Lee, to be placed in a scrapbook by his wife, Beth.

The cards may contain personal wishes, stories, memories,

anecdotes, etc. to help him celebrate!

Please send cards & photos before Monday, September 28 to:

Westwood UMC, c/o Julie Fletcher, 3460 Epworth Ave.,

Cincinnati, OH 45211.

In addition, there will be another surprise gift.

Beth is going to make a poster that will feature:

“60 Things We Love About You!” Would you email Beth and include a word or a short phrase

that describes Pastor Lee for the picture?

You can email these to Beth: [email protected]
